I'd echo the sentiment of some of the other reviews that this property is extremely old, which means it comes with pros and cons. I'd say if you're one of those people that likes staying in B&Bs because of the feel, and are willing to look over the inconveniences that come with that, this is a good place for you. If you prefer staying in hotels with modern amenities and are very focused on comfort, this hotel isn't a good fit.

Pros: lots of character - very cool decor and there was a sitar player each night in the lobby, helpful staff, free wifi (in lobby only though - no wifi in rooms), breakfast included (nothing special but passable)
Cons: not "luxurious" by any means - shower didn't ever really get warm, room was chilly (there during the winter), bed was pretty stiff, we were on ground floor which was tremendously noisy in the morning. One disclaimer - not every room is the same. I was there with a group of 15 people and some people found their showers were fine and their rooms were plenty warm (I was in room #5). Every room is very different.

It was cool to see/experience once but I wouldn't stay there again.

As a heritage property, you expect that the Bissau Palace might be a little rough around the edges and parts of it certainly are. The lobby and lounge however are charming and full of character and give a very good sense that this used to be a palace; the rooms off both areas are filled to the brim with fascinating pictures and artifacts dating back to earlier times. The furnishings in the bedrooms are a little worn and dusty and the facilities are fairly basic. There's a small but serviceable pool area and some very pleasant gardens which are nice to relax in after a day of sight-seeing or, if the weathers good, to breakfast in; unusually, there's functioning wi-fi throughout. The staff are especially friendly and attentive.

Room Tip: Depending on your taste, ask either for one of the larger rooms or one with newer facilities; altern...

Our room was terrible, room 112. It smelt very bad, the bathroom was covered in black mould and the sheets smelt terrible.
The pool was very dirty, please dont get into it.
The food wasnt good either, the buffet was cold and the choice not very good.

The hotel is worth a visit as the reception area and dining areas are stunning. Beautiful hand painted walls, nice gardens and the staff are friendly and helpful. Food orders take a long time so be prepared for a wait.

Room Tip: Avoid 112 it is very smelly

Yes, it's a fascinating property, and the paintings / furnishings in the public spaces are full of character, charm and interest. Yes, the rooms have frescos. But (and perhaps we were unlucky) ours was poky, chilly, and noisily located by the main thoroughfare into the hotel, with an uncomfortable bed - not a place we felt inclined to spend more time than we had to.

We had a room in our own building. The paintwork is a little tired and the facilities are reasonably basic but the decor was splendid.
The hotel is just off the very dirty street. Apparently some tuk yuk/taxi drivers refuse to go this way!
The service was good and even late at night, they made me a cheese toast and a cup of tea! The rooms are not heated so ask for lots of blankets if you come Nov - Feb time.

My comments are in line with Bradbury11. Reception and lounge look great.
However... rooms need a major 'make-over' including investing in some decent water-heaters. We spent two nights here and showers never made it past luke-warm; the geisers aren't up to the job.
The hotel restaurant is best avoided. Quality is poor and plenty of better places in town.
Avoid the laundry service as it has a reputation for losing stuff, borne out by some of our group. Unfortunately, we only learned of this reputation once we'd lost items of laundry!

It has no pretension to be a five star hotel. Sure it has a few shortcomings but where doesn't ? I found it to be utterly charming and friendly. The restaurant was adequate, the wifi worked (in the designated area) the rooms were comfortable but not luxurious. Sitting by the pool with a cold beer after a day on the streets of Jaipur, heaven ! The staff were helpful and in fact arranged a weeklong road trip through the major cities of Rajasthan at a very reasonable price after my rail plan fell through due to a lack of planning on my part. Frankly I am pleased that it ranks at number 115 in the Jaipur hotel listings as it means I can probably get a reservation next time I am there. I just booked a room for my son and his wife.
