I have been coming to Bissau Palace for some years now and everytime I arrive it is like home away from home. The staff are friendly (especially the Nepalis), the rooms are a bit of a hit and miss (some are great, a few are just acceptable - so have a look around before you commit). I really like the 'old world charm' of Bissau Palace, I mean, which hotel features a glitzy glass dining room and painted walls all over?
A couple of years ago they added a small swimming pool, which is a very nice touch indeed!
Good hotel, love to come again!

It is a beautiful place and rooms too. But what you get does not justify the cost. The budget room is ok. But additional facilities were lacking (the coffee shop and the restaurant were closed; the pool is not well-maintained, buffet breakfast so-so, no telephone in the room). The service is not well organized with much staff but lack of coordination (for instance we ordered a taxi from the desk, which the travel agency person denied the next day, yet the hotek driver was waiting for us...).
Plus, the location is a little problematic: one has to walk shortly through a narrow, dirty, crowded street in a very popular area where young boys were a little of a pain, making fun of trying to touch us, so I would not recommend it for ladies or foreigners travelling by themselves.

This beautifull mansion turned hotel is an oasis in the noisy and filthy city. The room was nicely furnished and just repainted in the old style. Bathroom clean and with marble, but the valves were old and worn out. The reception, lobby and restaurant were kept in the original style which makes it a 'living museum'! For those who don't like antiques: this is not your place.
Well kept swimming pool in the back yard, nice front garden.
Food for luch and dinner good; breakfast very simple.

I stayed here for two nights as part of a G Adventures tour. Although my particular room was slightly dated, it was much bigger than expected & kept very clean. The reception & communal areas of the hotel were also very well looked after & decorated with lots of interesting, intricate things. The location of the hotel was great & it was a quick rickshaw ride to get to the city palace & palace of winds. The pool area was very pleasant & the hotel also offered a range of massages for very reasonable prices.

We stayed at this hotel in April 2012. We were 3 couples forming part of a travel organization. The rooms were not very clean and in need of repair and maintenance. The aircondition was very poor, not to say bad. One of the couples had to change rooms three times to get a reasonable airconditioning. All three couples had the same bad airconditioning experience. The building has its own atmosphere, but the owners will have to invest quite a lot to make it a hotel worth staying.

An old world charm in a palace built for royalty with some of the family members still staying there. The room we stayed in was called the Mughal Chamber and it was in the main palace and not the building outside the palace like some of the other rooms were located. It had a few old artefacts like fighting armour and spears besides ancient furniture. The Bhuvaneshwari Restaurant and Madira Bar are in the centre of the palace just beyond the reception and lounge area which are full of old leopard trophies, old pictures, painted walls and ceilings besides a lovely fireplace which was not in use since it was really hot in the summer time when we visited. Pictures and paintings of the royal family including some of the English Royals like Queen Elisabeth II and Prince Charles were also displayed on the walls.

The walls and ceilings are painted all over and even though they are restored paintings and not the originals they are still worth seeing for the style of painting in those times.

The swimming pool is small but cute. They also arrange a Jaipur city night ride in an antique Willys convertible car for a princely sum of Rs.4600.

There was no telephone in the room and no calling bell either!!! The restaurant had some nice dishes but when we were there they did not have any non-vegetarian dishes available but they still got what we wanted from another local restaurant. That was very nice of them to do so.

Room Tip: Get a suite room for better facilities even though it may be more expensive.
