“Great value accomodation. Perfect for the budget traveller”
Reviewed November 8, 2009

I found it quite hard to find affordable accomodation in a central location in Mumbai but thank God I came across Hotel Lawrence! I would have easily paid more that 500rupees for this hostel. Room was spotless. Fan in the room. Clean (shared) bathroom. Friendly and helpful staff. And substantial breakfast. I would definitely stay here again if I were backpacking in Mumbai. It's so close to all of the main sights, nice restaurants and market stalls. Once I was pointed in the right direction when I arrived there late at night (it's very hard to find esp. in the dark) and once I got over the shock of homeless people and dogs at the entrance to the building, I enjoyed my stay in Hotel Lawrence. Definitely one of Mumbai's best kept secrets.

Hotel Lawrence is exactly what you'd look for in a budget hotel: clean, safe, and in a central location in the city. Yes there are no frills and you have to share a bathroom, but for 500/600 rupees you really can't complain.

So, we stayed in one other establishment in Mumbai at the start of our trip which was grubby, unfriendly and had alot of bedbugs.

It was decided to up the budget for Mumbai and Hotel Lawrence had vacancies. Quite a charcterful place and the staff are generally pretty decent... the manager and the owner politely converse in English, the breakfast boy sheepishly knocks on your door in the morning to give you your basic (bt very welcome) breakfast. Nice little extras include the brekkie, filtered water and a good selection of books and magazines to swap/borrow/read/do oragami.

Good value, and rooms clean and basic, though not places for relaxing at night though most offer a nice little view. Laundry service is welcome and not TOO pricey.

My only critques would be no sockets in the room, the unwillingness of management to give any discount when two people were staying in a triple... but thats about it.

It was a great place to end our Mumbai trip and in alot nicer area than Colaba...

I love Hotel Lawrence. It's clean and straight-forward with no frills. The owners are very friendly and helpful, with good English and no funny business. Rooms are basic but, most importantly, very clean. Bathrooms are shared, but again, well-looked after. I spent my first couple of nights in India here and it was great. Five minutes walk from Coloba and Gateway to India etc and easy walking distance to CST. The area around is also safe and pleasant, with delights like the Chetana book and craft centre on your doorstep. Ignore the paan stained stairs, the hotel is located on the third floor. I also spent my last two days here and Lawrence was my saviour after a gruelling three consecutive days on the road. Breakfast is included in the price (500Rs single/600Rs double) and is very welcome; bread, jam, a banana and real coffee. I love Hotel Lawrence and can't recommend it highly enough.

we stayed in room 6,we were surprised firstly because our 600 ruppees got us a very clean room, the shared toilets/showers are cleaned frequently & as a bonus there was two windows with different views & in the morning we watched a Kite building a nest & two very green parakeet type birds....its was also very quiet.
The manager spoke excellent english & was very helpful..he allowed us to leave our bags after checkout & arranged cheap taxi airport transfer.
the hotel is situated down a dark alley but we found it without any problem & its 3 minutes walk from the Gateway of India, & a short walk in either direction will bring you a wide choice of restaurants/street food. as a footnote i would add that there are no electric points(in our room at least) although this wasnt an issue to us. The rooms have fans but not aircon.
I would definately stay again!
P.S. breakfast is included in the price!

It was our first time in india, so we didn't expect that hotels in India can be that old and uncared for, still hotel Lawrence in Mumbai might be the best option if you're on budget and if you don't mind specific accommodation conditions, like dusty old furniture. Also DON'T take the stairs, it's really an experience, just wait for the elevator, which is good. The room was big enough, it even had a view, it had a mosquito net (a very important element in India, especially during monsoons) and it was pretty clean. The room was air-cooled, which means it has a huge fan with abt 6 speeds and it's enough to cool the air. There was slightly warm water in the evening, but hot water is also a problem in India. The only problem was that we weren't provided extra sheets, which is common in India, but we've taken some with us, so it didn't bother us. The bathroom was ok, it's a shared bathroom and toilet, and if you manage to use it before others do, it's even very clean. Breakfast is included, as I noticed it was european style breakfast with coffee/tea and toasts, but we didn't take any, though other clients (all of them foreigners) had no problem with it. The owner/manager is extremely helpful, but not in an unpleasant way. He was very correct, polite and answered all our questions and even helped us find the hotel street (if you tell the taxi drivers, they will never know where that is, so just ask them to drop you at Jehangir Art Gallery, it's a block away from there to the left, if you come from the airport.) The location is just great, central Colaba, 3 minutes away from 2 art galleries and Prince of Wales Museum, a bit far from the train station and the Gate of India, but if you like walking, it's abt 20 mins away. It's also located in the heart of Mumbai commercial area. It's kind of far from the airport, but it's worth it for its great location (take the prepaid taxi from the airport to Jehangir Art Gallery and don't give more than Rps 350). The price for a double room is Rps 600.
In general, it's a nice hotel, I'd recommend it to anybody who wants to enjoy India as it is and stay alive:).

There is a dearth of budget yet decent accommdations in Mumbai, Hotel Lawrence is an excellent find. Its location is superb, a stone's throw from major tourist sites such as the India Gate, Taj Mahal Hotel and Bombay University.

For the Rs500 we paid for a double room and considering how expensive Mumbai can be, we are surprised by how spacious and clean our room was (lack of frills notwithstanding). The 3 shared toilets are basic but very clean with limited hot water. The staff and manager are also friendly and helpful.

If the lack of frills does not impress you, bear in mind you often get really grimy, sad-looking places for the same price or more. I heartily recommend this place for those on a tight budget.
