“Some rooms are nicer than others”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 25, 2012

We checked out a room here before we booked that wasn't so nice. Since it was within walking distance of a lot of activities we decided to come back. They put us into a nicer room that made it worth the $80 USD they charged a night. Parts of the hotel appear to be damaged from monsoon and mold. Nicer rooms are larger and are located on a back alley away from the noise.
You can walk to Colaba and historic Mumbai from here, and you are blocks away from the Gateway of India. We caught a cab to Marine Dr. for about $3USD.
The hotel has a free breakfast in the adjacent bar. Expect it to be a bit thin and service to be lacking. We did visit the bar at night and it was a happening spot with a weird mix of old disco and pop hits.

Room Tip: Have them show you rooms- try to book in the tree lined alley

I had a budget and I wanted to be in South Mumbai. I found this hotel and I must say for the price I paid I cannot complain.
The rooms are a tad old and need sprucing but they were clean and surely comfortable.
The food was very reasonably priced and was very good(indian food)
The bar was super, good music and very well priced drinks.

Fantastic location and great value for money. Strongly recommend for leisure travelers. The shops and restaurants were all walk able and the lady at the reception was extremely well spoken and polite. Being right behind the Taj Mahal Hotel everything was extremely accessible. Thank you Hotel Diplomat for making our stay in Mumbai a memorable one.

Room Tip: Ask for the renovated rooms.

The location is great and the staff were friendly and helpful. The rooms were fine and got the job done. Bathroom coulda been cleaner...it was nice having a mini fridge. For mumbai this place is cheap but for india its a lil much for a budget person. That being said it was a good place just nothing amazing.

Excellent Location. You can reach all main tourists attractions by walk. I stayed in deluxe room for 4 nights. Big clean room with good view on the TajMahal Hotel. Everyday cleaning. Good breakfast. Excellent service. The value is ok for Mumbai.

I stayed at the Hotel Diplomat for 3 nights, which concluded a 2 month trip around India. The location is excellent, I was able to walk to the train station, Crawford Market and the Gateway of India, among others. I paid about 3600 rupees a night (including taxes), compared with the 10,000+ rupees a night at the neighboring Taj. The lobby is small, but I didn't think it was bad (I didn't have much luggage though). The staff was very helpful and friendly. I stayed on the 3rd floor and I have to agree with a few other reviews... it is loud. There was banging, crashing, power tools, music, etc. My main complaint is that there were birds nesting in/on my air conditioner...they woke me up several times very early in the morning. The room is basic, but it has what matters: clean bed(s), hot water and most important - no bugs. The bathroom is clean with a nice shower, and there is a good sink that you can hand wash your laundry in, as they provide you with a stopper for the drain. The beds were comfortable - the majority of 2 and 3 star hotels that I have stayed at in India have mattresses that rival concrete - but if you are expecting plush and fluffy, prepare to be disappointed. Yes, the hotel is worn, with old TVs and furniture, cracked walls and peeling paint. There is no "complimentary" water in the room, but you can walk outside less than 100 meters and buy a few bottles a 20 rupees a pop - plus, they had drinking water available in the lobby (in a pitcher with cups, not bottles). I wasn't impressed by the breakfast, the food in the burners was cold, but I was satisfied with some toast, bananas and tea. There is wireless internet available at a very reasonable rate (100 rupees per 24 hours).
I was slightly confused by the policy of leaving your room key at the front desk when you leave the hotel. I have never seen that before.
As a solo female traveler, I felt perfectly safe both in the hotel and the surrounding area both day and night and the doormen/guards were very friendly, ready to help you with whatever you might need (i.e. taxi).

Room Tip: Avoid the 3rd Floor (Room numbers 3XX) if hall noise bothers you
