I was on a business trip and stayed there for quite a long time. Located at Ballard estate right opposite the reliance headquarters, probably one of the most costliest areas in Mumbai, the rates are very very good. Huge rooms, with an equally nice washroom this can definitely be a place to stay when one visits Mumbai. 5 mins from Mumbai CST, Nariman Point, 15mins from Churchgate station and Kolaba people can visit as well as enjoy the stay by visiting all the famous joints in Mumbai.

I have just enjoyed another stay at the Grand. Its a great place to stay in Fort Mumbai for a reasonable price. The staff are friendly and professional. The rooms are very clean and spacious. And its a great location. Its a safe and quiet part of town - tree lined streets and home mostly by a mixture of elegant Victorian buildings housing government and corporate offices. The significant tourist attractions of this part of Mumbai are in walking distance. There are also some good places to eat near by.

We travelled as a family of four last week and stayed for one day and night at Grand Hotel. This hotel came as a surprise in how clean, comfortable and well appointed both the rooms were. The air conditioner worked vigorously, the linen was very fresh and pleasant, the room almost too big for two people, the bathroom adequate and modern. There was a kettle with basic tea and coffee supplies, and an efficient little refrigerator (with two small complimentary water bottles.)

The hotel is most conveniently located in an area of Ballad Estate which has mostly offices, so very quiet in the evenings once offices closed. It is also very close to other restaurants. We were also very happy to find that transport was not at all a problem -- black and yellow, old (non-ac) taxis were readily available just round the corner. We even got right at the hotel's doorstep one of the 'blue' air conditioned ones, and negotiated an eight hour rate with the driver. The rates for the taxi provided by the hotel looked steep, but they seem to have a drop off to the airport service.

However, we were not so pleased with the following, very simple issues of housekeeping and restaurant management:

1. The newly built fourth floor had a large number of sand or cement bags on the landing out of which contents had spilt over, and which could easily be swept off, but were not. It made for rather an unwelcoming sight each time one had climbed up to one's floor or came to descend the stairs.

2. We had a lovely balcony with new mosaic work showing on the floor, and would have liked to use it a little more to sit out and even look at the rather undistinguished 'harbour' view, but again it had not been swept. Inaddition, the balcony still had building paraphernalia like the ladder, or used bisleri bottles, and other debris cluttering it up. Given that it was no longer under construction, and this was a harbour view room, the balcony should have been cleaned for the guests.

3. An unnecessary mystery required some patience and time to be solved in our room. The telephone instrument has a lot of buttons, to be pressed in order to be connected to the clearly marked destinations like reception, housekeeping, room service or whatever. These did not seem to work at all. We spent a desperate half an hour trying to reach the reception, till we accidently discovered the key to this well kept secret: there was a little upside down sticker under the glass of the small telephone table, invisible because it was totally covered by the large telephone instrument, which had the new set of instructions on how to connect to various facilities within the hotel!

So moral of the story: if switches and buttons on your telephone instrument do not work, LIFT it and see what is underneath.

3. Our most serious complaint, however, is about the complimentary breakfast. It could have been a more tolerable fare had the serving staff been a little more hospitable. We did not want much except fruit juice, fruit and coffee, but that could not be made available. On enquiring, we were told that the manager was on leave that day. An important looking waiter/stewart seemingly in charge, a stocky, dark, short person who we were told is called Prashant, simply refused to budge when we asked to replenish the fruit tray with cut watermelon (btw the only fruit which they seem to serve.) "Finished" or "No Fruit", he kept repeating with a deadpan expression. Finally, the very courteous hotel staff at the reception had to be approached, who arranged for some bananas to be immediately bought and supplied! However, by then we were all rather put out at finding that the 'fresh juice' being offered was bottled juice, the chicken salami was tasteless, there were no eggs to order, only 'Akuri' i.e. bhujia (a sort of scrambled egg with onions and tomatoes.) However, our daughters were happy to discover that there were freshly made potato vadas, and we were relieved that they had atleast reasonable coffee.

A room tip: We took two double rooms, one of them the more pricey 'delux harbour view double room' (not really worth the extra, in our opinion), and another a deluxe double room which was really quite good enough.

Both the rooms were on the newly built fourth floor, and the old lift went up only to the third floor, so we had to climb up the extra flight of steps. That was alright, but I was glad that my knee was not giving trouble that day. Very elderly guests, or those who cannot climb stairs for whatever reason need to know this aspect of the hotel.

On the whole, we liked this old fashioned, graceful hotel with modern amenities and its courteous reception staff, which all deserve five stars, but we all also strongly feel that the management need to do something radical about the disappointing breakfast arrangements, and atleast the above mentioned staff member serving it.

Dear Guest,

Greetings from Grand Hotel, Mumbai !

Thank you for your valuable time taken to elaborately tell us about your experience. We have since noted your feedback and are taking corrective action at our end.

We are currently in the process of renovating our corridors and exterior facade of the building, which may explain why it may have caught dust during your stay inspite of it being cleaned by our housekeeping personnel.

Your valuable suggestions on the other mentioned points will definitely help us address areas of concern and will most certainly help us restructure and synergize the processes to the levels expected. Looking forward to see you soon and rest assured we shall ensure all personal care.

This is an old hotel which has been modernized.
My room was a nice size.

The Room safe worked as expected, unlike other hotels where the save had been locked shut.

The bed was firm, which bothered my back a bit, but the staff gave me 6 pillows to make the bed softer.

The staff was excellent they really did everything to make you stay comfortable.

This area of the city is undergoing a lot of improvements.
When I was there the street by the hotel was being repaved, the sidewalks were also being replaced. The construction really didn't bother me. I found this to be one of the nicer area to stay in Mumbai, and I was very happy with the hotel.

Also I have had a insect problem in the hotel. No mosquitoes or roaches.
There was also plenty of hot water AC and Cable TV.

Breakfast was included and the staff would cook whatever you asked.

I enjoyed the hotel.

Especially the old fashion sign in BOOK, which I haven't seen in a hotel for many years.

I chose the Grand Hotel for its location and old world charm and was not at all disappointed. Very clean and well appointed rooms, good bathroom and excellent and friendly staff - especially the two young Bengali men on my first morning at breakfast plying me with the most delicious spring rolls!!
The Ballard District was lovely ro walk around in the day time to take in all the architecture of the old buildings as not as crazy as the rest of what I experienced in Mumbai. Would definitely recommend to friends.

We stayed at the Grand Hotel for two nights and must say that the rooms are very comfortable. The staff are friendly and helpful and that the food in the restaurant was very good.
The hotel is in an excellent location for sightseeing and just a short stroll to the train station.
Yes the building could do with a lick of paint but apart from that is was a very pleasant stay. I would recommend the hotel to anyone and we would stay again.

If you like to be woken up at 6:15 in the morning for a water bill of the night before, have no hot water when you arrive tired late at night and the 'harbour' view is looking out over the back of the sea cargo customs house and a lot of smokey grey cranes and pipes.. Definitely not worth the money.. By the way, the staff didn't care much about anything either..

Dear Guest,

Greetings from Grand Hotel !

Thank you for your valuable time taken to tell us about your experience.

On further analysis of your misunderstanding of our room category we would like to address your misconception that our Harbour View rooms are an appropriate description of rooms which indicate rooms facing the harbour which consists of sea cargo and grey cranes etc.

We have since noted your feedback definitely help us address areas of concern and will most certainly help us restructure and synergize the processes to the levels expected.

We look forward to welcoming you back soon and rest assured, we shall ensure all personal care and will leave no room for error.
