I stayed at this hotel for three nights in August 2010, which fell at the tail-end of an eight week stay in rural India. I was traveling alone and felt very well cared for and safe at this hotel. The staff were very friendly and attended to all my requests, including a clear explanation of the bill, directions to the closest ATM, and setting up a car service to the airport. The doormen were very professional and always greeted me. I felt that the staff were truly concerned about my safety as a young female traveling alone. They checked in on me, but also allowed me my privacy.
When I first arrived at the hotel, the staff showed me several different rooms. Although I did not choose to stay in it, there was an upgraded room with a big bed and an amazing glass-shower bathroom. If you are looking for more frills, I would highly recommend inquiring about this room.
The room I stayed in had two twin beds with adequate sheets and bedding. The air conditioner was quite noisy, but very efficient. I was also able to open the window which brought in a pleasant breeze. The room had a living room/sitting area with a couch, armchair, flat panel tv, dvd player, and fridge. There was also a vanity area, a desk, armoire, and bureau. There was more storage for my stuff, then I knew what to do with!
The bathroom was clean, but needed some repairs. One morning there was little hot water, but this did not bother me, since I had just arrived in Mumbai after two months living in a rural village. The water pressure was inconsistent, but I was always able to get enough warm water to fill up the bucket they provide and scoop water from there. Again, by the time I stayed at the hotel, having a private bathroom was a luxury.
The hotel has several amenities such as wifi, free dvd rental, and free breakfast. The breakfast is served as a buffet with both traditional Indian plates and some continental options. You can also request eggs and omelet as part of the breakfast. Room service, while expensive, was very quick and good. The decor is pleasant, with a maintained retro vibe on the interior with comfortable cushy couches in the lobby. The exterior is reminiscent of the British era. It is shaped like a triangle with an interior courtyard.
The one downside to this hotel is that it is not in Colaba, the main section of Mumbai, where most of the tourists stay. It is located in Ballard Estate which is a business district. When I arrived on a Sunday the area was completely dead except for a multitude of pickup cricket matches being played by young boys and teens. Because of its location, the taxi drivers are not as familiar with it. I would recommend having the phone number and address of the hotel with you at all times. Because the hotel is in more quiet neighborhood it did not seem to have many guests at the time of my stay. I believe there were only three other rooms being occupied. Still, the hotel was about a 10-15 minute walk to some of the main tourist sites, and even closer to some great restaurants. I highly recommend Britannia and Co. just down the block!
