Most people overlook it from the bridge, but walk down the steps and along the road to the entrance. You will have to pay a small fee and be taken around but well worth it. You see the whole process including ironing and heating the water

“Great for a few photos”
Reviewed March 4, 2013

It's just off an overpass, so parking is difficult. A few vendors sell cheesy items there. Not much else close by to do.

“Mumbai’s muscle-driven Maytag”
Reviewed February 22, 2013

Located near the Mahalaxmi train station, Dhobi Ghat is an outdoor laundry consisting of hundreds of concrete wash pens with adjoining flogging stones, long lines of drying clothes of all colors/type, and, of course, the local Mumbaikers that are employed here washing, hanging, and ironing. I ended up stopping here on several occasions during my week in the city as most driving tours make a point to swing by for a few minutes. All we were allowed to do is stand at the top of a staircase and watch the activity unfold; to my knowledge there aren’t any detailed tours or mechanisms for viewing the area up-close. The whole scene is visually arresting but loses a bit of its allure after about ten minutes. Dhobi Ghat reminded me of the Tsukiji Fish Market (Tokyo) or the Inca Salt Pans (Cusco) in the sense that average people’s daily activities suddenly become fascinating when viewed in the context of being unfamiliar to our society. A recommended stop but seeing as the drive here took longer than the time spent watching the scene it’s best to incorporate several other stops in your itinerary if you are thinking of adding this to your tour.

“An Amazeing Sight to See”
Reviewed February 21, 2013

The Dhobi Ghat or Open Air Laundry is an amazing sight to see. You can take a peek into what is the worlds largest open air laundry with some 500 men and women working away washing clothes in big porcelain tanks with their feet and hands and the women ironing the clothes. There claim is that they never loose not even a sock . It is said that they are born in the laundry and carry on the tradition of their families and learn the trade and pass it on. A must when in one of the most majestic cities in India x

“An amazing process that seems to work amazingly well!”
Reviewed February 18, 2013

I have read both the good reviews and the poor ones about how people view visiting this business attraction. My opinion is that this is an extremely interesting thing to see given the complexity of it's simplicity. They dont use modern equipment or methods and yet they have a reputation for producing clean clothes and rarely losing or misplacing a single item, this is impressive.

I enjoyed learning about how this process works and about the community of people/families that maintain this operation every single day of the year. It is an impressive thing to see how human beings collaborate to exist and survive.
