Mumbai is a crowded and expensive metro city, full of interesting historical sites within the city. Picked this hotel for its closeness to the Lamington Road. The hotel is only few minutes away from the beach and the Churchgte station.

I was shocked by its apprearence when I arrived. The lift is the good 60+ year-old "cage lift" we can hardly see it anywhere in major cities. I almost ran away to the nearby hotel when the staff show me the renovated Deluxe room on the 2nd floor. The room is equipped with all the bell and whistle of a typical 4-star room. The only complaint is the door doesn't have the manual lock, as the receiption lobby is on the 5th floor.

There are many eateries and restaurants next door. The Chinese restaurant is a no-no only if last resort. "Mocha" is a great place for coffee and food, very reasonable priced with great taste.

The Internet is cheap and good. The taxi drivers downstairs are reliable. The staff is very helpful.

I'll visit this hotel again if I want to stay south Mumbai.

Chateau Windsor was the first hotel we stayed at on our arrival in India and I was extremely disappointed. Our rooms were very basic with terrible views. Just about all of the staff were rude and unfriendly. Evertime I left my room they were skulking around the hallways staring at me and making me very nervous. I went to the desk to buy stamps and despite there being 2 staff on the desk i was told to go away and come back later! The only member of staff who actually smiled at me or talked to me was the nice guy who covered the evening shift. He always had a smile & chatted when he saw me, unlike any of the other surly looking staff. The door staff will attempt to get you to use the taxi's they hail as they are on commission but if you use one of their taxis it will cost you twice, possibly 3 times as much as one you find yourself & you will find you get a driver that speaks no English which can seriously hamper your journey. We were never shown around the hotel and only logging on to TripAdvisor today did I see in another review there was a roof terrace! This hotel is basic and not worth a penny over £25 a night. It is horrible and seriously over priced.

After reading the other reviews, I had to make sure i requested a recently refurbished room.

On arrival we were a bit surprised by the exterior and the cage lift (even though we had seen the pictures) but once we were in the room, we were happy we had booked this hotel. It is a gem at the price, for the quality of the room, friendliness of the staff (in person - not really on the phone) and location.

They have guys on stanby 24x7 which is useful for girls being dropped off by cabs after a night out. Its next door to The Ambassador and round the corner from The Intercontinental.

Go For It!

We arrived late at night and even with a booking and a prepaid deposit for a room with a bathroom we were shown two rooms, one without a bathroom attached and another that had no windows but did have a bathroom attached. First impressions were not good. We settled on the room with no windows.

Generally we found the staff were friendly and the room service was handy if a bit uninspiring.

The room was very average, but it was clean and a plus was the room was serviced every day. We obviously didn’t get one of the renovated rooms other rave about.

The location was convenient to many attractions however compared to other accommodation across India it was the most expensive by far, yet was way down on the list of places we enjoyed.

Spent one night here. Much modernised since last visit 12 years ago. Room was fine, service good, reception efficent though not very friendly. Excellent value for money in Mumbai. Felt secure. Gaylord (opposite hotel on left) very good for evening meal.

We stayed at the Chateau Windsor on Sunday, January 13, 2008 through Wednesday, January 16, 2008. While it doesn't look like much from outside, we were thrilled with our room and the EXCELLENT service that we were given during the duration of our stay. Apparently they are in the process of renovating the rooms and having read reviews prior to booking, we knew to ask for a renovated room. We had a very comfortable king-sized bed, television, en-suite bathroom, and hot water at all times. The room was spotlessly clean, as were the linens. The service was wonderful and we were treated very well. Don't miss the surprisingly good room service breakfast. Cheap, and yummy! Tea and coffee served in the room any time we asked for it. We have absolutely no complaints and we hope to have the opportunity to stay there again. The Gaylord restaurant is within walking distance and is worth a visit for a nice dinner. If you go, make sure you visit The Gaylord bakery for something sweet after dinner!

Firstly everyone must be aware by now that Mumbai is a real boom city and that it is difficult to find decent accomodation at a reasonable price. As Lonely Planet puts it you have to re calibrate your hotel/price expectations when you arrive in Mumbai However I must admit that The Chateau Windsor gave us an ejoyable stay and good deal. From reading other reviews I guess we were given a renovated room as the room was immaculate. This was one of the few rooms in India which were really clean. And I mean clean by western standards, not just "India Clean"
The location of the hotel is also good. Only 5 minutes in a cab from the main station or the hysterical tourist hub of Colaba. Just 100m from Marine Drive from where you can walk all the way up to Chowpatty beach and Malabar Hill.
There didnt seem to be a restaurant at the hotel - breakfast is served in your room or on the rooftop terrace and is a very good deal at 60 rupees.
As for the management and staff we found them very helpful. Despite arriving early they got our room in order by 11 'o ' clock and on our check out day they offered us the use of the room until 3 o' clock at no extra charge.
