The “thief’s” bazaar as its called today is most fun I had while in Mumbai. While in the old days this is presumably where the ethically challenged could buy cheap stolen goods, today its more likely that current victims are hapless tourists overpaying for fake antiques.
That said this place is an entire neighborhood and is packed with all kinds of cool, old, used, miscellaneous stuff and as anyone who has spent time buying antiques and/or vintage items would know.. this can be a gold mine of deals!
Spend some time to check this out.. even if you don’t buy anything this neighborhood makes for some great pictures and some friendly chats with the locals. I spent the better part of an afternoon there looking at coins, sitting with some local kids and helping them bang copper wires out of busted transformers to recycle ($10/kg.), looking at old manufacturing equipment etc.
