“Lack of maintainance”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

Located in Byculla 5 minutes away from byculla Railway station (East side). Earlier it was known as Rani cha Baug then it got renamed as Jijamata udyan - Victoria Gardens. It was laid out in 1861 and is one of the oldest zoos in India. Entry fees is just 5 Rs. It takes almost 2 hours to visit. It is one & only Zoo in the town. It is worst maintained by BMC. water in the lake is dirty. Cages are not in biggest sizes.
Zoos are specially to make animals, birds happy but this Zoo has very bad maintenance.
BMC should take care of him.
Birds in the Zoo:
African Gray Parrot - Large in number & with beautiful colored African parrots. Its a great pleasure for kids to watch them.
White crow - There are 2 crows in the zoo which are in white color. Cage is probably very congested.
Flamingos - Kept with Swan. Duck & many more. It is best one.
Animals in Zoo:
Hippopotamus - There are 2 laziest Hippos in Zoo. It is tom 1 attraction in the zoo.
2. Deer - Most common animal.
3. Monkey - As monkeys are best seen at Sanjay Gandhi National Park still it is a entertainment to watch monkeys in cage. But if you want to see monkeys at their own habitat
& nature then you must visit National park. Borivli.
4. Panther - Only one Panther snake is there in Zoo. Which is in good condition.
5 Lion - Passed away recently due to aged.
6. Crocodile: 2-3 Crocodile are in lake. Lake water lever is very low. Water is contaminated. It is greenish in color. Miracle thing is these crocodiles doesn’t eat animals which are kept near by in same cage.
Garden :
Park has got 2 parks for kids. However college going couples are behaving very cheap in the park which should stop as it is a public place.

“'Too Bad to Visit'”
Reviewed January 20, 2013

Recently visited with my child, was a poor show!
Although located in heart of city, Byculla, seems neglected by caretakers. Gardens are maintained but animals r in hell. Nothing to see except elephants, deers, Monkeys, Hippopotamus. All cages covered by dust, ill maintained. plz donot visit

Only good thing i felt is beautiful Statues of Jijamata & Shivaji Maharaj. Another statue of a Royal Monarch.

“Something better than Nothing”
Reviewed December 8, 2012

Jijamata Udyan or Rani Bagh of today, formerly known as Victoria Gardens, is located at Buculla , mumbai, india. It was laid out in 1861. Also in this premesis is Bhau Dali Lad museum
,which was popular as Victoria & Albert Museum during India's pre-independent time.

Overall Jijamata Udyan today is a combination of a botanical garden , a museum and a small Zoo/bird park. It is not authentic in any of these respects as this entire private property originally owned by the jewish businessman David Sasoon , came in the lap of Bombay Municipal Corporation , as a donation by its broad minded owner and thereafter it appears
to be left to its own fate, due to its very mediocre administration.Despite all that , the plus
point is , this premises offers a small green field in today's huge concrete jungle called Mumbai

Visitors still find it interesting, Primary and nursery school children are brought here by
local schools, for a day's picnic. Teenagers also visit this place in search of some privacy
away from their places .

Statues of Child Shivaji with his mother "Jijamata" , King Edwrds VII are maintaind in the garden as historical monuments.

Except weekly off " Wednesday" and Official declared holidays, the garden remains open all other week days 9 AM to 7PM

With all these features Jijamata Udyan continues to exist as a compromise for its visitors as
" Something is better than Nothing " affair.
