Colonial charm and eternal vibrancy that define the Maximum City strike at you from every corner of Colaba. The home to grand architecture in form of office buildings, museums, art galleries, theatres, hotels, churches, parks and what not, Colaba is the go to place for imbibing the real flavour of Mumbai. Showrooms to streetwise vendors, and the mighty footfall throughout the day ensure that the city never sleeps.

Of course, lot of economical shopping options available on the street but excellent eateries too as well as Regal Cinema, Delhi durbar restaurant, Leopold and Irani restaurants too. No chance of getting bored here.

One of the busiest areas in South Bombay, and having been built by the British, Colaba exudes a colonial charm. The hustle and bustle of the place will absorb you completely - from famous cafes like Leopold, Mondegar and more recently the Colaba social to plenty of street shopping for junk jewellery, scarves, kurtis and other knick kancks, there is plenty to do in Colaba.

If you want to get a taste of what old European cities look like, this is a good place to start. Some good shopping and bargain options available too.

We went around this busy South Mumbai area and the road side shops kept us busy. We also had a lot of snacks and refreshments. Cool place.

The Causeway as it is known to the locals, was constructed by the British East India Company in the 1700/ 1800s. In the hustle bustle of old business district, Colaba gives you a first hand experience of old world charm with heritage buildings, cobbled sidewalks which are cramped with street vendors selling anything and everything from apparel, handbags, trinkets, art jewelry, antiques( or near look-alikes), diners and cafes as old as Mumbai, modern shops selling the latest designs in clothes and footwear, carpets, gems and craftworks, books; in short , nearly everything, as well as having hotels, both heritage and contemporary. And then the traffic on the lanes, and colaba causeway road is as chaotic! The area is also hub of various art galleries, which makes this area a natural destination for artist community. You can visit the National Art Museum, The Prince of Wales Museum, the Jehangir Art gallery etc.
It is best to walk around the area, and sample the food at the landmark and famous diners like Cafe Leopold (the food is hearty), and Cafe Mondegar (amazing F&B), and Moti Mahal , Delhi Darbar for the indian tastes. This is a place for leisurely walking and absorbing the sights, smells and wonders of India- and be sure to get cajoled, heckled and irritated by very earnest hawkers. And while you are browsing through the artifacts and apparels, be sure to bargain- almost ruthlessly- by starting at 30% of the quoted price till you each the half price! If you are adamant, you win. If you are unsure, ask another Indian tourist. This is a tourists' paradise. You will find both genuine and shady sellers. The fun is in simply experiencing the entrepreneurial qualities of Colaba street vendors. But Bargain is the mantra here.
The Colaba fish market or Sasson Dock, is the largest fish market in Mumbai and can be visited in the early morning, provided you have the stomach for the fishy stench.
If you are a tourist visiting Mumbai for the first time, do make stay arrangements in Colaba area. The water-front has the Gateway of India, and you can catch boat rides to Elephanta Caves, which is a day tour. You can also enjoy an hour long Harbour ride in the evening. Please purchase the boat ride tickets from the authorised ticket counters only. The Taj Hotel is world famous for its architecture, hospitality, decor- as well as the terrorist attack on it a decade ago. The food is delicious and sights from the hotel windows are pretty astounding too. There are many smaller hotels for cheaper rentals and equally good offers.
A movie hall, Regal, is one of the oldest theatres in the city- to check out the latest movies.
A must visit place for new comers and tourists. Be sure to carry plenty of cash of smaller (50,100,200,500) denomination- as I assure you, you will love shopping and eating in Colaba.

Thronged by locals, tourists and students who just walk lazily or shop artifacts or cheap shoes. bargain always and you get a good discounted rate. beware of crafty people and pick pockets.
