We booked 5 nights at the Hotel Godwin when we couldn't get in touch with Shelley's Hotel because their website was unavailable. Booking via email was a pleasant experience, Mr Singh was extremely friendly and helpful, however when we arrived at the hotel the requested room - a renovated room on 7th or 8th floor - was not available. After rejecting the room offered, which was on 3rd floor (small but OK, but at that time overlooked some noisy building work on the street) we were immediately offered an "upgrade" to a suite room on 6th floor. This turned out to be exactly the same decor as those on 7th/8th floor, and was a large corner room with a sofa, a separate raised seating area and a distant view of the sea.

Breakfast was a choice of Indian or continental (both buffet) and was extremely good. The only problem - which became a bit of a running joke - was the inefficiency of the young staff in re-stocking the food and crockery. It was rare to be able to get a full breakfast in one go - if there was milk there would be no cups and if there were cups there would be no tea etc. so it was bit of a relay race to get everything you wanted. That said, I liked the hotel a lot - the rooms were clean, the staff were helpful and the locatioin was great. What's more, we were still charged the original price we had agreed when we booked, even though we had been given a more expensive room. I'd definitely go there again - probably this year if Shelley's website is still playing up.

a very good location, but too expensive regarding the quality of service and cleaness; we reserved 2 deluxe rooms they tried to give us a very dark and dirty room on the first floor , we didn't accept so they gave us a good one on the 8 TH , after they need a proof of our advance payment ( their email of confirmation!!) and after they tried to make us pay twice our advance payment . the breakfast is so bad . so it's a place to stay if you can't find some where else

Excellent location in quiet green area of Colaba. Reasonable rates (3000 rupees/54 euros) and good value for the money and a place to relax away from Mumbai caothic traffic. Ample rooms and nice TV set. Good service and better breakfast.
In the Reception, talk to Singh, the big bearded sij: he rules.

I stayed here during December with my family - we had booked 3 deluxe rooms. We had a lot of hassle regarding the booking -only 2 of the rooms were available and they were going to transfer us to the hotel next door which I refused. With al ot of arguing we managed to get what we had asked for - 3 rooms on the 7th floor. The rooms were perfectly fine for the price - hotels in mumbai are expensive so dont expect luxury in this hotel.

Make sure you do not accept any rooms on the lower floors because they are really awful. The rooms on 5th, 7th and 8th floor were clean and newly refurbished.

Breakfast I avoided at all costs - it is better to order toast and tea in your room to be honest.

Service is not great but at the end of the day we very little time at the hotel - it does the job and is in a good location.

Overall I would probably stay here again if I'm on a budget. You can also try Hotel Ascot which is on the same road and looks alot better.

First of all, travelers should note to leave their expectations and standards for hotels at home before departing to India. This is step one. Otherwise, most reviews of anything less than 4/5 stars will be negative.

With that said, the Hotel Godwin was a 3 star hotel in India. It was ok. The bed/sheets were clean. The security was excellent. The staff was kind and gave the guests space, and they served one of the best breakfasts in a 3 star in India.

For those that want more details - read below. I write my reviews while in the hotel, rather than on memory.

Staff: We gave them a 3/5. They were distantly kind - which was actually refreshing after a few days. Greetings with a smile, but not a bother like most other places driven by tips. It was a nice place in terms of people.

Room: 3 star. It was ok. The beds were ok, sheets were clean and no really concerning issues. It was ok by Indian standards.

Bed: We rated these 2 out of 5. Not great, but not the worst we experienced in India.

Air Quallity: 2 out of 5. There was no ceiling fan - which was common at all other 3 stars. Otherwise, get used to terrible air quality - not recommended for those with COPD.

Decor: 2 out of 5. It was the basic marble design.

Entertainment: A TV with one or two English channels. We did not plan on watching TV in India - so it was no concern.

Power: For those with equipment (i.e. cameras, camcorders, chargers) ... the Godwin was actually well suited. We had a total of 4 possible plugs to charge overnight. This was more than usual for our other locations.

Room cleanliness: 3 out of 5. The little things were dirty, like the light switches, doors, etc ... The toiletries were refilled and dirty. This was consistent throughout 3 stars in India, does that make the Godwin bad? Not really - just Indian 3 star.

Service/Facilities: The A/C was weak, but functioned. The room was cool, not cold. The bathroom window would not close - so we worried about mosquitos - but had no issues. There is free internet near the breakfast room. This was great.

Hairdryer/Iron: These are available on request.

Security: Great. One entrance with 3 guards and a 24/7 desk. Then an elevator assistant. One of the better security hotels we stayed in.

Noise Level: This was an off and on issue. The walls are thin - and was a problem some nights - but just from guests - not outside traffic, etc ...

Breakfast: The breakfast was excellent. Good selection, good food. This was rated 2nd best out of 6 hotels during our stay in India.

Location: Excellent. Alot of shopping and eateries at the end of the street. The waterfront is also very close. Gateway is also walking distance. Overall - excellent location.

i booked a family suite fo family of 5 people 2 months before checkin requesting a suite on 8th floor and room to be ready at 6pm as we were tired after a long flight!
on checkin we were offered a room on 5th floor which was pathetic and small..then one on 8th floor which was no family suite..just a normal double room with a sleeper couch..no other choice was available.. after accepting this room it took them an hour to sort out room before it was given to us.
We only went for breakfast the first day and found the breakfast area crowded, noisy and food not up to standard...never went again!
Found management very unhelpfull!
Will never stay here again.
Only good point is location in Coloba area

I guess the big thing to remember is that you're in India and you can't expect the norm if you're a westerner or a Kiwi like me. The booking via internet was fine and they arranged the transfer where a driver was waiting for us. The hotel itself was pretty average. If you're travelling on a buget and are expecting things to be pretty basic, a bit grubby/smelly then this place is ok. I moved on from here since i hated coming back to it at night. One thing that particularly hacked me off was 3 so called bellboys all waiting for a tip when we got to the room. I know we don't have to tip much to get rid of them but 3 at the same time was taking the ----. If you want some mumbai tips mail me at scorpioscorpion@hotmail.com
