Dharavi slum was founded in 1880s during the British colonial era. Dharavi spans more than 500 acres, Dharavi's total population estimates vary between 500,000 to about 1 million. There are businesses of every kind, it is something of an informal economic powerhouse. People in Dharavi live and labour, but they need better living conditions, infrastructure and sanitation. Dharavi remains one of the biggest informal urban settlements in the world because it has been neglected for so long.

After seeing the English movie Slum dog Millionaire, the real life visit to Dharavi area was not very pleasant. I do not feels readers should visit the area.

This is well worth a visit. I never knew a slum could be so productive. We went with Tour with a local. The only downside to this was that we could not take any pictures.

The best visit we did while in India. If you want to continue you're life in ignorance, then give this a miss. Otherwise, open up your eyes and understand how many people live and get on with their lives in very challenging living conditions, while preserving their humanity and humour. We came to realise that the conditions you live in don't define who you are, what you think and how you treat others. Reality tours provided us with a safe and hugely informative experience, our guide, Dinesh, was always ready to explain what we saw and help us to better understand the people in the slums. We saw first hand the outstanding work they do in the community. Eg. A girls football team, art classes, learning English, health education and so much more. The children we met were so eager to learn and have so much give. The team of volunteer NGOs and locals deserve huge praise. We urge you to go on this tour and discover this side of Mumbai which would otherwise remain hidden to you. You must go and experience it for yourself.

Dharavi is one of the most under reported areas of development in the country. In Mumbai, a sizeable chunk of the clothing and recycling industry has its workforce in the slums of Dharavi, located in central Mumbai. It is a bustling mini-city in itself, with more than $500 million in annual turnover. It has one of the largest industrial bases for handling leather goods, pottery and clothing which are supplied all over India. even worldwide.

A view into Dharavi is provided by many tour operators, but trust only a few of the original ones to show you the actual face of this wonder within a metropolis. Bollywood Tours, Reality Tours etc operates tours within this area, and are conducted by professional guides who are well versed with local geography, culture and knowledge.

Do make this trip a "bucket-list" entry during your visit to Mumbai, India.
Keep traveling.
