Owner description: We have lived in Aamchee (‘our’) Mumbai for long and know it like the back of our hand ! So we venture down small lanes to find stuff that otherwise just doesn’t get discovered. You will be in for many a surprise – plenty of amazing and varied stuff, people and activities! We, at Be The Local, work to support local full time students in pursuing higher education as well. We achieve this by simply offering them employment in our company and training them to be our ‘tour guides’. This gives the students two very distinct benefits. One is that they are able to receive sustainable income to support themselves in education and second is that it boosts their self-esteem and self-confidence, as they meet widely travelled and experienced tourists. Being The Local, we can offer you a fascinating ‘getaway’ that gives you a ringside view of the ‘madness and magic’ of MUMBAI – the living city that ‘never sleeps’!

“Excellent day trip!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 29, 2012

We are a family of 5 and were originally going to do this tour with another company, but our hotel sent us with this one. We are very glad they did because it was a highlight of our trip to India. We didn't know what to expect but ended up with a bright tour guide nicknamed "zee" his English was excellent and he was born and raised in Dharavi so he knew all the most interesting facts and was well recieved by everyone in the neighbourhood. We do a lot of travelling and are always looking for a way to support local and this was a great way to do so. we felt completely at ease with him by our side even though we stood out quite a bit! It was nice to support a truly local business and help the owners of this company as they are using it as a business to help them attain university education. The tour itself is a fascinating eye opening experience of a city within a city. Would recommend this to anyone!

“Must go on this tour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 26, 2012 via mobile

We heard about the "slum" tour and just by chance our hotel arranged it with this company. It exceeded our expectations and was not at all what we thought is would be. Dharavi is a self sufficient place that after the initial shock seems normal. People work, go to school, and everyday activities. Our guide Faisal was great and very knowledgeable. He was born and raised in dharavi so he knew every corner and most locals on the street. We felt very safe with him at all times even though some places might seem a little sketchy. I have never been to such a place and I have traveled all over the world. It really makes you appreciate your life while while also gaining a new perspective.

“Have Mumbai "the local" way!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 1, 2012

Prior to my visit I had heard a lot about the Dharavi "slum" in Mumbai and since the film "Slumdog millionaire" so did a large audience. Even though only a couple of minutes in the movie actually show footage shot in Dharavi. My goal was to learn about the area and the people living there, get past the stereotypes. I stumbled on the "Be the local!" offer on the Internet. My inquiries about a fully customized tour including some flexibility to decide on options ad hoc were positively answered. My lead time for this arrangement was only a day. Nevertheless the management (Fahim and Tauseef) and our competent and friendly guides Zeeshan and his friend made it work. We got accurate instructions where to meet, were punctually picked up, took a deep breath at entering Dharavi and quite soon "felt local". We were taken excellent care of, made some new friends and safely made it back.

If you have a genuine interest in Mumbai life beyond the touristic stereotypes, want to acknowledge the struggle of a less privileged people towards a decent life by acknowledging their effort then take up this offering. The operation is owned, managed and staffed mostly by Dharavi locals. So your business has even a leverage. You get to know a place where few fellow travelers care to look and the locals can sell a great product to a fair price.

Dharavi is a fantastic ecosystem with a lot to discover and learn. Go for it and "Be the local!"

“A different sightseening tour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 11, 2012

We did a great tour through Dharavi with our fantatstic guide Salman.
We had a really bad hangover and were tired, but Salman showed and talked about so many exciting things, that the tiredness flew away.
It was really interesting, funny and we got a completely new impression of a slum. We asked a lot of questions and he knew all the answer.
We highly recommend this tour to everyone who is visiting Mumbai for more than a day.

“Fascintating tour”

Be The Local Tours really did a good job. My tour guide Mujaffar was great - knowledgable, funny and friendly. Dharavi itself is incredible - you have to go and see it.
