The good: It's perfectly located just by the CST (train station) and if you can live with sharing the bathrooms, it's pretty cheap, being in Mumbai. The room I stayed in was clean and I actually had no problems at all during my 3 nights stay. The wifi was good, thought it's 150 rupees extra a day.

The bad: you get what you pay for, which means windowless moisty room, cheap, small breakfast, shared (occupied) bathrooms and as it seemed, unhappy staff.

The service was anything but friendly, but if you want smiles and extraordinary services included you probably want to stay somewhere else.

After staying in a couple of hotel nearby, we decided to stay in the Welcome Hotel for a night. Double room without bathroom was rp2000+, if I recall correctly. Note that at this price, you can get a room with attached bath (smaller perhaps) in other hotels within the vicinity. Like other hotels in Mumbai, there was no 'monsoon season discount' like in other cities (eg. Hyderabad) during this period. For budget travellers, this amount may be slightly pricey.

The interior of the hotel looks good with plenty of polished granite on the floors and some of the walls. Steep stairs lead to the decently decorated reception area. THe hotel staff are generally friendly and accomodating. However, one of the room service staff never smiled when he delivered water to our room, and his expression was rather spooky (like that of a serial killer!).

Plus point for the hotel is the evening 'tea service' which consists of tea and an indian snack delivered to your room. Newspaper and breakfast are complimentary in the morning. However, I found the portions too small for my apetite!

The room is big, with the usual cable channels on tv. Chilled filtered water will be delivered to your room upon check in and upon request after that. There is a buzzer in each room which alerts the hotel staff to provide room service. Generally the room was clean and spacious and we did not spot bedbugs in our room (which seems to be a common problem in Indian hotels!).

As our room does not have an attached bath, it is rather troublesome to carry bathing paraphernalia to and from the room. The cubicles in the common bathroom itself are of a decent size (men's bathroom, not sure about female). However, the cubicles tend to get dirty in the morning with the complimentary soap wrappers on the floor and cigarette butts lying around. Perhaps more frequent tyding up of the common bathrooms during the 'peak hours' would really help make our stay more pleasant.

Nice sunny rooms, shared bathrooms also nice. Room service a bit over-keen (always coming straight in with no knocking)... Free breakfast : Indian one is nice, continental not. Security are happy people. Overall a happy place and good value for Mumbai.

Where to start??? The Lonely Planet really got it wrong, this was by far and away the worst hotel my sister and I stayed at in India. Like a previous reviewer, I found that the service - or the complete lack of it - was what really marred our stay. As an example, my sister accidentally left her mobile at the airport and wanted to arrange a courier to collect it. When she asked for assistance at reception, she was told that she should organise it herself as she had "plenty of time on her hands". The reception staff refused to help and we were only able to arrange a courier with the help of two complete strangers. The other hotel staff seemed to linger around (I'm not sure if they were looking for tips or not, but trying to relax while several staff members stand 2 feet away is really difficult). There was often no hot water and the shared female bathroom was basically a shower over a loo. We cut our stay short and found a great little hotel two streets away that was less expensive and actually welcoming. Give this lemon a miss!

I thoroughly recommend the Welcome Hotel in Mumbai. It is the cleanest hotel and is about a 15min walk from the Colaba hotspots.

My partner and I arrived at Mumbai airport without a hotel booking. The hotel booking counter at the airport rang a few hotels for us but couldn't secure any rooms. They kept pushing their own recommendation, the Manama Hotel (which is just down the road from the Welcome Hotel) and so we decided to go there.

The Manama Hotel is an awful place to stay. Our room was full of cockroaches, the bedsheets and mattresses were filthy and the hotel was so noisy (staff talking loudly and the squeaky lift echoing throughout the hallways).

So after 1 night at the Manama Hotel we went down the road to the Welcome Hotel. It was the best move of our trip. We managed to get an Executive Suite; it was the cleanest room in India with an amazing bathroom and shower. The service was top-class and we couldn't hear any noise from outside the window or elsewhere in the hotel.

To top it all off: we checked out at midday but as we had to catch a train later on in the evening we left our luggage with the hotel for pick up later on after seeing some Mumbai sites. When we came back, they let us use the communal showers, for free, in order to prepare ourselves for our long train journey. Such a nice gesture.

They also have a wi-fi connection for which you pay 150 rupees for a 24hr connection.

You can not go wrong with this hotel.

We chose to stay here as lonely planet recommended it and we were concerned that accommodation in Mumbai would be very expensive. Having met other travellers we now think you could get more for your money at alternative hotels. The rooms were clean which is a plus. The toilets are communal - 3 mens and 1 ladies toilet (which seemed to be constantly occupied on the morning, on occasions by men!). Whilst the staff were generally friendly they had a tendency to linger slightly longer than necessary when bringing things to our room - not sure if they were waiting for tips or simply staring! Location is pretty good - 15 minute walk from main part of Coloba. Generally though we were a little disappointed - the room and hotel was really more of a hostel and think if you did a bit more looking around you could get something nicer for a similar amount of money.
