If you're hoping for service with a smile, helpful friendly staff and well maintained rooms; then look for somewhere else to stay.

In comparison to the ludicrous prices that other places charge and one of few places that offer dorms the price is unbeatable.

This whole place feels a bit like a halfway house and sea to be cleaned upon the whim of management (and whoever thought it'd be a good idea to have a 16 bed dorm with one bathroom needs to be shot).

Once you get over the rooms, staff and smell it is a good place to meet other travellers and has a really good location. (Don't pay attention to the address listed here its useless, have a look a google maps.)

First stayed at the red shield guesthouse in 1969 and on numerous occasions since then.
Not for the soft traveller as it is very basic but has the advantage of being safe, it is in a great central location and is very affordable. If you are not to picky this is accommodation is more than sufficient.

Room Tip: ask for an A/c room as these are larger and have a bathroom

if you are traveling across India and trying to save money, this is the cheapest place in Mumbai, its got the essentials, including a toilet, shower and drinks. i met a lot of travelers there, it's in a great location for tourists as well.

Room Tip: go for dorms, they are really cheap, only 250 rupees

typed some mail to them, very very ignorent about my questions.
Did not answered to what i was writing, took more then 2 weeks for them to reply, and still they have not relied my latest mail. After reading other peoples experiences I,m very happy we didn't go there. Phone number, on their own homepage is wrong and I asked for anotherone, they didn't answer me.
In my view that's same as saying we don't want any customer.

I visited this pathetic place with few of my friends, despite having read the horrible reviews about this place (my mistake). Other than untidy rooms, dirty toilets and obnoxious staff, this place has little else to offer. I would prefer to spend my night in a railway platform in Mumbai than stay here. I request you all to take these review very seriously and not make the same mistake as I did.

India doesn't always offer fancy and clean accommodation, so after 2 months I am used to a little bit of discomfort. Paying 850 rupees for a double room with private (not attached) bathroom that runs out of water is quit cheap for Mumbai. Also stayed in the big girls dorm (250 per night), about 20 beds. Sheets were dirty, toilet never stopped running and just 1 bathroom for 20 people?
Staff is really unfriendly, computers have the worst internet (for 40 rupees an hour) and you pay for luggage storage. Pretty bad vibe in the place on general.

Room Tip: Don't get any.

Mumbai is kind of an expensive place when you're travelling. Looking for an affordable place for half a day I was 'glad' the Red Shield Guest House had a single room available, later in the evening. So I took it, without checking very carefully (my mistake). A double room with separate bathroom across the hall. No AC. 850 Roepie. Although the floor was kept clean (the smell of the chemical stuff used cleaning didn't go away, by the way), the walls and the ceiling where dirty, lots of dust, dirt, pieces of old paint, i don't know what was all hanging on the ceiling and walls. The most terrible thing was that the fan, when turned on, created that much wind that pieces of dust, dirt and paint fell down from the ceiling on the bed, with me lying in it. Together with the terrible smell, the very old, not maintained room, the heat inside the room, I hope I will forget the stay here as soon as possible. The only thing I can say is that the older men working there where nice and friendly..
