“Amazing view of the Ancient Human Spirit”
Reviewed November 9, 2012

A group of caves, formerly human settlement, high up on the hills near Mumbai.

The amazing thing about it is, these are not natural caves; rather, man-made: cut and carved deep into the solid rock. A whole village cut into the mountains, with dwellings, schools, temples, water tanks, everything.

The temple hall need to be seen to be believed: High ceiling, with windows for natural light, tall statues carved into the walls, big pillars all around, intricate relief murals.....awesome.

You have to admire the water storage system: big reservoir cut under the floor, only partially visible. High up on the parched hills, with no tree covering, where rain is probably rare, this must have been a life sustaining feat. (Too bad, modern humans seems to see it fit to throw water bottles and plastic bags into it).

If you admire ancient human spirit of survival, outdoor activities like trekking and rock climbing, and panoramic view of the jungle and city from the top,..... don;t miss this!

“An ancient monument...spoiled over time by neglect”
Reviewed November 8, 2012

I love visiting this place every once in a while, considering its proximity to the city. The place is amazing and worth visiting at least once. It is disappointing to notice the neglect this place has been through over time. The authorities and visitors must make sure to keep this place clean so our future generations can have a glimpse of history in their own city.

“Beware of monkeys”
Reviewed November 6, 2012

Though, it might be little far from the center, but Mumbai local trains will make it easier for you. Catch the western railway train and drop down at Borivalli. You can hire any mode of transportation to reach Kanheri caves. Once you get there, you can spend your day roaming around the place. Personally, I didn’t take a guide, but I will advise you to take a guide, to know more about the caves and know the park better.
