Royal Orchid Brindavan Garden Palace & Spa
Ranked #13 of 117 Hotels in Mysuru (Mysore)
Reviewed February 3, 2014

This lovely historic hotel with 3 story open air columned lobby built by the Brits and with its large old style rooms should be 4 star. However if you want wifi, a good pool and gym, and good food (more below) don't stay here.
Good points
1. Beautiful view of gardens from terrace and from all rooms.
2. Large gracious rooms in old British style.
3. Step out of hotel and you're in this almost-mini-Versailles, with fountains lit at night.

Poor management (possibly improving, see below) makes for bad points:
1. Pool filthy
2. Gym 3 machines, only treadmill and cross trainer work
3. Food: lesser quality buffet. Terrible fruit at breakfast and awful croissants, etc.
Only after insisting on a la carte ( are they lazy?) for lunch and then dinner did they say ok but not without a fight. Surprisingly grilled prawns and tandoori chicken were excellent. But despite their advertising you have to fight to get food cooked to order.

Note: it's sometimes worth complaining. They cleaned leaves off pool and started changing the water and fixing the filter. It's a cheap rubber lined pool with 5" scum, like a dirty bathtub. Maybe they will eventually clean it or better yet replace it.

Note to owner/manager: do you ever stay at your hotels? If you did and used the facilities like a guest you might change things. Example: shower curtain is old, and needs replacement. Curtain should surround tub so water doesn't get all over the floor at the end of the tub when one showers. Try your own buffet and taste its poor quality. Paper napkins, tiny ones, may be ok for breakfast and lunch but not for dinner in a hotel claiming to be 4 star. See other comments above. FYI placemats at the Bangalore Royal Orchid are filthy. How much can it possibly cost to replace them? Also, room ( for 3 nights) in Mysore Royal Orchid was not ready when we checked in at 2pm. Does management think the owner doesn't care or won't spend a rupee to fix things?

Bottom line: lovely hotel in historic building and great place if you don't care about wifi, pool or gym and are strong enough to insist on a la carte, as they advertise it.

Room Tip: All rooms face gardens. We had room 105 ground floor, convenient.

Our stay at Royal Orchid - Brindavan Gardens was a memorable one. The hotel is maintained really well and it certainly lives up to its standard of being a heritage and vintage property. The courteous and helpful staff made our stay quite pleasant. The quality of food and service at CK's was wonderful, though the dinner buffet can be improvised on the taste. I would recommend CK's "Laal Maans" and "Chicken Tikka Masala" from their platter of Indian and Mughlai food. Also, we have had better Mysore Pot Coffee than what was served at the garden cafe.
The view from the hotel is spellbinding with an extended view of Brindavans and the Krishnaraja Dam and the hotel is soothingly lit at night. A romantic place to spend as a couple and a relaxing getaway with your family.
A few suggestions -
1. We did not find any boards to guide us to the hotel after we were in the perimeter. GPS was not quite helpful in this area. We had to stop and ask several times. Since the hotel is a little away from the main streets, few boards with direction to the hotel would be helpful for the first timers like us.
2. The Spa and massage needs drastic improvement given the standard of the hotel. We were totally disappointed by the full body massage that we had availed. Also , would suggest the management to work on the privacy in and around the SPA outlets. You can hear people walking around, talking and also interacting with the masseuse between the massage session. As a customer, I would definitely not come back and avail the SPA service here.
3. For a person who gets freaked with the sight of a lizard, it is definitely not quite pleasant to hear a bell that sounds like the constant call of lizards!! Although we had switched off the bell in our room at night, we could still hear the freaky sound from the adjacent room. I had to sacrifice some sleep for this !!..Recommend replacing the bells with something more soothing...

Over and above, I found the place value for money and will cherish the royal hospitality . Felt princely !! :)...

Room Tip: The Queen Bed rooms are not cramped at all. Good enough for 2+1 adults. Choose higher floors towards...

We stayed for one night, Jan 15-16,2014. This is our second stay at this property, the first was during 1993-94.

What a fantastic place! After the crowds left the Gardens we could sit at our cosy balcony and enjoy the beauty of the place. The rooms are really good with an old world charm. The lobby and common areas are fabulous.

The only con of this place was the Food and Service, which was good but we felt could be better.

Room Tip: Any room facing the garden is a definite yes!

I stayed here for one day and would never come back to this hotel. This was rated 4 star in tripadviser (have never gone wrong on this so far!) and had booked based on buetiful pictures of the hotel room and the facilities. But when i arrived was up for a big disappointment. Everything about this hotel, facilities, cleanliness, services is below par. And I am not exaggerating even a bit. Came here around noon on Jan 13th. Checked into the hotel. First shocker. There is no lifts in this hotel. You expect a 2 or 3 star hotel to have a lift. Anyway this is no major issue for less 40 years age so i can ignore. Enter the room it looks like rooms are not vacuumed, dirty carpets, cob webs all over the place. I did not bother to call then to clean the room again as the cleanliness in the hotel is WAY BELOW AVERAGE. So there is no point in having discussions with the hotel staff as my stay was one night only and leaving early morning next day. The room looks big on picture but they are very small. Balcony is unusually big. Bath room and the fixtures were like stone age ones. My daughter said she doesn't want to take bath in rusted shower. Hand shower did not work in my room. Bucket was the only option but there was no bucket in the room... Main Restaurant was closed when i arrived. Did not have lunch anyway in this place. It says spa, swimming pool etc etc... None is really worth even taking a look let alone use it. Dont go by website pictures... All the facilities are very old ones and not maintained well. I cant believe this hotel has been rated 4. You dont rate the hotel based on how brindavan garden looks from balcony!!! I came back to the hotel after my other places of interest in the evening for the brindavan gardens visit. Went to garden, enjoyed musical fountation etc and came back to hotel at 8 PM. Now look from the balcony and obviously all lights in gardens are switched off... So now you know why you cant even rate this hotel based on even location! Now the dinner experience. Sat in balcony and thought of ordering some food and drink. From inroom dining ordered kitchdi for mu kid and searched for BAR manu. There is no Bar manu in the room. I called up and the said someone will get the bar room. One guy came after 3 reminders and he stood right there. I asked i will call the in room service but he said bar is separate and food service is separate and he will take the order right in the room...That is apparently the rule in this hotel. So i ordered a beer and some cocktail (mojito) and he took the manu with him as if you can order the drink only once!!! Suddenly balcony light went off. After some food and drink came we sat in balcony and suddenly light went off. I asked reception as i could not find the switch. It seems the control for balcony light is somewhere else and it took some good 15 minutes and couple of reminders to finally get the lights back on. service for food and everything is strictly below average. There were probably some 3-4 guests apart from me... But very bad hotel for the price. Food is also below average. Breakfast is fine. Probably only saving grace in our entire stay. The people in the breakfast place were very helpful and one of them got my back which i had left also. Overall i will never recommend this hotel unless they refurbish and clean this hotel well.... Very disappointing Stay. I stayed 2 nights in Comfort Inn suites (junior suite for Rs 5700) and 1 night in this hotel. This hotel was as bad as it can get... It feels like a govt quarters or badly maintained bungalow.

Room Tip: Never consider this hotel. Location is indeed not good unless you just want to spend day and night i...

The view of Bridavan Garden was great. We were staying in the left wing top floor. The room size (Queen) was very small but the balcony was quite big.
Food was average. Service was good.
I would advise anyone visiting Royal Orchid with family to stay in a King size room

Good Location. Heritage Property. The Rooms, wooden staircase, King Size beds, windows give a feeling of Royalty. Good Service, Pleasant Stay, Good Food. Wonderful view of the KRS Dam and Brindavan Gardens, especially the view of the lights at night.

Though the Hotel claims facilities like SPA, Pool, GYM etc. The SPA was nothing but a small room with a massage table!. The Swimming Pool was small and covered with a net, to protect from falling leaves, I guess, but again not usable. The Gym was not open. Mini Golf was "Out of Order". A big minus for the facilities and would do well if they included some activities for Children.

Overall - Wonderful experience, Great Place to stay, Good Food & Service - Truly Value for Money and of-course the breathtaking views of the Gardens.

Room Tip: All Rooms face the Gardens. Choose the King Size Rooms which are more spacious.
