this is one of the best experience i ever had in whole of my travel and stay. you will really feel the majestic colonial India and in your blood you will realise the richness of our heritage.you need to stay there couple of days just be there in the hotel explore the beauty and richness , the staff there is extremely polite and guest friendly especially mr pyuish and mr ashok. this will be one of the best family trip and that i would recommend and on top of that its not all that expensive too.it was not too busy that's one thing i enjoyed, i love to have lot of space and any one with the same attitude will really enjoy the place i am planning on a second trip there.

Room Tip: take up the rooms in the old complex which are the old once they are really good and u will feell th...

I am drawn to hotels that have a 50/50 split of extreme opposite reviews from great to terrible. We found this Hotel amazing if you are looking to discover some feeling of old colonial India in a largely untouched and unaltered manner. This was the best old style hotel I have visited in the world - not to be confused or compared with world famous hotels immaculately restored and operated - but a real living piece of history. Make sure you get the old rooms (I think they are the least inexpensive anyway) with the deep long veranda looking out to the grounds and the city. The city sights are even better to visit when you know you can retreat to this quiet and comfortable place and dream of times past. I also found the management extremely helpful on advice and solving other travel bookings I needed to decide on. By comparison I saw most of the other noted hotels in the inner city in a shabby little street (harsh Rd) and thought none of them came close to the unique experience of this place - my highest rating !

Room Tip: Choose the Old Rooms - They are also the cheapest

We went to this hotel expecting to have some good lunch after 4 hour drive and skipped all the hotels on the way. All of us so excited about that we are having lunch at Palace like maharaja, as we started to have our food all that excitement went into drain. Each and every item has one or the other problem, either salt is too less or more, there is no consistency in that. Spice level is inconsistent across the dishes, rotis were served in cold. In dessert, Gulab Jamun were felt like it was prepared a day or 2 day before.

Service is pathetic, nobody will turn around for clearing the table even after calling.
In some table they have kept empty salt and pepper mills.

After that we took a walk around the building and felt so bad that it could have been maintained much better, clearly it shows lack of maintainance.

Later we went to some small hotel and had food again which was much better than THE GREAT LALITH MAHAL PALACE HOTEL!!!

Reading the mixed reviews on this hotel we were prepared for anything, except what a wasted hotel property it is!
It is out of town, which is a little bit of a nuisance and it took quite a while for the tuk-tuk to arrive, but it means it is quiet and peaceful.
The Palace looks a bit like the Capitol Building in Washington, and about the same size!! It has been kept in reasonable repair (by the government) but is extraordinarily tired. The rooms are big, big, big- as well as the bathrooms- but totally lacking in style. With a little flair they could be spectacular.
The public spaces are as grand as they can get (did they copy a St Petersburg Palce for the main staircase??) but dark and lacking in love and design panache. The dining room is two-storied grandeur, in pale blue and white (St P again??) but dark and dismal. Lonely too, when you are the only ones there. Service is strange- enthusiastic and pretentious but misguided.
The pool is OK but run-down and in need of a bit of care.
The service was odd- the room guy was obviously hankering for a tip and drove us beserk!- it seems to need better management all round.
Food was cheap and OK.

Room Tip: I don't know how to answer this- I think our room was as good as they get- at least it was close...

Absolutely outstanding hotel building, neo-baroque palace with large verandas and phantastic sights. Restaurant located in huge baroque hall - incredible! Room -appartment in the main palace was very nice, victorian decoration. Even the bathroom is "victorian" with the old original shower and tube...authentic!!We were pleased by the good quality of food and by the helpfulness of waiters and staff, some waiters obviously got some western trainin which you rarely an say about Indian staff! To be recommended!

Read a lot of reviews on TA and other sights before booking, and decided to go with it for two reasons:

1) we were only staying for one night, so if it was as bad as some reviews make it out to be we would be out soon
2) when else will we be able to say that we stayed in a palace formerly used for the Maharaja's guests?

In the end, we were VERY happy with our decision. It was three of us-- wife, myself and our three year old. We were placed in one of the Heritage Classic Suites on the 2nd floor, front facing side (#23). The room was very large and more than met our needs. Much of the furniture were period pieces, which only served to enhance our stay. The bathroom was huge-- no seriously, I have stayed in many hotels (NYC, Paris, SF, etc) where the entire hotel room would have fit inside of this bathroom and still left plenty of extra space. The bed was comfortable, and the room had plenty of spce for a roll-away bed- however we chose not to use one for the little guy.

After checking in, we ordered room service for lunch. Service was prompt and the food was excellent. Not a huge menu, but certainly a variety of choices. After lunch, we decided to head out. As we opened the door, we were greeted by a monkey who "barked" at us as we walked out. He gave us our space and we did the same.

We ate dinner in the grand dining room. The space is simply amazing. Dinner was great and the wait staff very professional. After dinner, my wife spent some time browsing in one of the small shops on the main floor, while the three year old and I took a few trips up and down the vintage lift.

Breakfast was a little underwhelming with only three choices of fruit, two choices of cereal and three choices of pastries at the "buffet.". We were given eggs to order and toast to suppliment, but I was looking forward to a true buffet breakfast with Indian and continental options. Perhaps we were too early (9am), but we were never told a time that breakfast "started at" while checking in.

Only suggestions for improvement would be for the staff to provide a little bit of history of the Palace upon check in or while escorting guests to their rooms. We would have enjoyed to have learned more about this grand building. Additionally, a coat of paint or touch ups here and there might help (noticed a few places that looked a little "rough").

For families: the pool area does not have a "kiddie pool" and the main pool was certainly too deep for our 3 year old to attempt. Heritage suites have plenty of space for roll-away beds... ours also had a chaise lounge that a little one could comfortably sleep on.

All in all, a great experience!
