We went to the lake with children at around 11 am. To our utter disappointment we were informed that the lake opens only from 4 am to 6 am for morning joggers.

I have lived near this lake for 20 years. The lake has changed quite a bit in the last 6-7 years. It is a very good place for morning and evening walks, bird watching. There is a small kids play area. Boating is not allowed and the lake is closed after 7 pm.

For a quiet city like Mysore, it may seem that a slice of greenery is easy to get, but to get a place to walk/jog while being admiring it needs a place like Kukkaranahalli Lake. The lake is surrounded by a joggers pathway (not paved) for around 4.3 kms. A brisk walk will take you around 30 minutes and there are stretches where you can get to observe the island filled with birds rising out of the lake.
The lake keeps the temperature down and often has a breeze that invigorates you. The best time to go and visit is early in the morning or before dusk. If you go too late in the evening (as it gets dark), you will have to contend with mosquitoes and other flying insects.
Recently a small eatery has opened towards the east entrance. I haven't visited it, but it does have a good number of patrons.
