We were travelling out of season so just turned up & were able to negotiate 20% reduction which made this better value, but still comparatively expensive.

The Palace building is beautiful, but was undergoing some building work at the back & we stayed in the annexe, so we didn't get the full benefit from this. The gardens also beautiful, & the dining area pleasantly located in a cool spot alongside - or in the palace if you preferred.

The annexe rooms were large and cool, despite no a/c. Bathrooms OK, all v. clean, but the our beds weren't v. comfy. Laundry was cheap & very efficient.

The food was good - large portions well prepared & served in good time. Staff were friendly & helpful but somewhat disorganised & some were obviously not very experienced.

Although out of town it was very noisy from the main road from about 6.30am until 11.00pm - good for early risers! The distance from town also meant you are a bit out of the way - both a plus & a minus.

I spent 2 nights at the Green Hotel. Located a little way out of town, an autorickshaw to or from the train station costs about Rs50. I stayed in the Writer's Room, paying Rs1,800, including breakfast and a fruit basket. The hotel is old and interesting, with plenty of places to relax, indoors or in the gardens. It is clean and quiet, with a good restaurant.

We stayed in the new garden clock, rather than in themed mansion rooms. The room was clean and secure, the beds comfortable and the water hot so no complaints, but not sure the room alone justifies the cost.

However, the hotel is a great place to catch up on 'life admin' such as laundry, booking travel arrangements etc etc and the staff are friendly and helpful.

We actually experienced more hassles and attempted scams (the palace doesn't shut between 12 and 4, and neither does the market!!) in Mysore than anywhere else, so it was actually really nice to be a bit out of town so we felt like we were 'getting away from it all' when we went 'home'.

The garden restaurant setting is lovely and the food excellent.

An excellent choice and one we recommend without hesitation. The aim of the management is to employ all local labour and they take young people and give them training in the hotel trade. They say that all profits are ploughed back into the local economy. The hotel uses the minimum of energy which means that there is no air conditioning but all rooms have efficient fans.
The main part of the hotel is a palace now converted to a hotel. It contains the most expensive rooms, all full of character. Staff are helpful, as is the travel desk. There are cheaper rooms in a new block, The whole place is furnished tto a high standard. Eating, with an excellent restaraunt, is done out in the extensive gardens, a most pleasant experience. There iare undercover facilities should it rain. The whole place is of a very elegant and high standard. Not the cheapest but you do get what you pay for. Rooms vary between Rs2500 - 5000.

We had read and heard plenty about this place before we booked but even that didn't mean we weren't surprised. First the hotel does have character and as it is painted a clean white it stands out in the area. It is certainly not a grand palace but has some charms. Our room was the Bollywood deluxe and my first impressions were a little disappointing. The door lock consisted of a large padlock, the room was only an average size and the Bollywood was a few old framed photos of Bollywood stars. The room looked clean but look behind or under the cabinets and you will see a build up of dust and dirt. The bathroom was functional and clean. The view from the bedroom window was not worth talking about. So far so average.
The grounds are very nice, even though they are next to a main road. The restaurant is outside in the grounds and at night when lit up it really is very atmospheric and the hotel takes on a different perspective. Our food and service were good, although not all the staff spoke English so people may interpret this as being cold.
I would still recommend this place as it is different and cheap, just don't expect a palace.
