“Interesting mix of European and Indian influence”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 12, 2013

I don't believe there's a tour or anything of the church, so perhaps it would have been more interesting if I'd known more about the history of it. Architecturally, it doesn't really compare with the grand cathedrals of Europe, or much of the Indian architecture in the area. It was interesting to note the blend of the two, though. Worth stopping for a minute if you're driving past, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see it.

“Nice, but...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 1, 2013

St Philomena's church is a very nice piece of architecture. It is worth the visit as it carries a good deal of the history of the catholic church in Mysore/Kernataka. However, if you've visited some cathedrals in Europe, you will not go wow! at the sight of it.

“The virgin in a sari. Nuff said”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2013

I've not been to too many Christian churches in India, so it was fascinating to see the Indian take on a non-Indian religion. Shoes off at the door is the start and throughout you can spot touches where local colour has added to the church. Things like the flower offerings on the Christ statue, the sari adorning the Virgin and the spangly dress worn by an infant Jesus.

“A beautiful church but not particularly historical”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 28, 2013

It's patterned after European cathedrals and it's very well done; I particularly enjoyed the Indian take on European cathedal construction. It's a nice building but it's not particularly old (dates from the 1930s-1940s) so it doesn't have the same sense of grandeur one can get from the older temples in this area or the Medieval cathedrals of Europe. It's a quick site to visit so if you are close by worth seeing it, otherwise would not prioritze it unless you are particularly interested in St Philomena or Catholicism in India.
