Melkote
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 20, 2013

Melukote is approximate 140 Kms from Bangalore, 50 Kms from Mysore and 40 kms from Mandya

It’s one of the important tourist and religious place in southern Karnataka.
Reaching there is quiet smooth, due to well maintained road from all directions (Bangalore / Mysore)

You can enjoy the drive in midst of rural Karnataka and good road.
If travelling by rail , Pandavapura Railway station is the nearest one. Bangalore and Mysore are the nearest airport.

There are two important temples - Yoganarasimha is built on rocky hills and one can enjoy the beautiful view from the top of the hill . Another temple – Cheluvanarayana Swamy is in the foothills.

It also has a academy for Sanskrit language and related research.

Another main attraction is vast and well maintained Kalyani which has been shot in many movies of southern India and one can also visit twin ponds called akka – tangi kola.

It also has a half built main gate ( hebbagilu) near twin ponds. The legend says, Kings from Chola Dynasty tried building the architecture with in one day ( dusk to dawn) and since they couldn’t complete it by dawn, they left the project incomplete

Every year the famous Vairamudi Bramhostava is celebrated. The main event of the celebration takes place in night until dawn.

Some other nearby places to visit includes – Tonnur Lake, Pandavapura, Srirangapatana.

Melukote is a place of temples and attractive picnic spots around. The place has mythological, historical and contemporary importance. The Vairamudi annual festival is just marvelous and unique. The place needs to be cleaned and maintained.

Melukote is a serene & sleepy temple town. The ancient temples of Cheluvarayaswamy & Mahalakshmi is a rich archeological monument & the deity is really awesome & provides instant peace!!
The vast temple precincts provide great solace & satisfaction.
Yoga narasimha swamy temple is on the hillocks nearby & needs a climb of 150-200 steep steps.Lots of monkeys abound this stretch.

The age old Subanna Mess is a never miss eatery.Run by two brothers, they really take care of guests in a warm hospitable way. Puliyogare & Sweet Pongal(Sugar & Jaggery varieties) are simply delicious!!

The temple atop the hill, Akka & Thangi ponds, the history that surrounds the place makes it a good spot for thinking about the past days.
Claim to fame will be as the location for Aiswarya Rai's "Barso Re Megha" from Guru.
Though I wouldn't like to out it that way, I guess the above mention should have got your interest by now.. :)
