Had a fantastic time at the Oberoi Cecil. Very helpful team working at the hotel, and genuinely want to make your stay the best it can be. We were provided with a great room with large separate lounge and bathroom. On arrival I was contacted by one member of staff, Natalia, to assure me that my earlier interaction with the hotel about my allergy to gluten had been acknowledged and that the chef would look after me. Well for 3 days I was treated as a VIP for all of my meals with special attention from the waiting staff and chefs, especially Tanvi. The hotel is a good, but enjoyable, walk to The Mall in Shimla. The hotel has splendid views over the Himalayas. Well worth a visit to the hotel and Shimla.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 211 which is a corner suite with balcony. Wonderful view and sunny. Obviously I can't guarantee the sun!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time and sharing your review. Its is wonderful to read that you liked the room, the hotel and facilities very much. I am happy to learn that our team especially Natalia and Tanvi took care of your special dietary needs. The hotel's location does add to an advantage of being close to prominent places and I am glad you enjoyed your short walks to the Mall road.

We came to the Cecil after staying at Oberoi Hotels in New Delhi, Agra, Ranthambore and Jaipur. All are very different in style and setting and all the others have been somewhere between very good and excellent. The Cecil is not. It's setting does not help. The photograph you see suggests an isolated setting amidst the cedar trees. In fact it's right on the road side, between some retail shacks and the old and very dilapidated "copper" building. The distant views from the room are impressive, the near views are less appealing. Whilst the other hotels have been oases of calm, the Cecil is right in amongst everything. If that's the experience you want there are plenty of other hotels that can provide it at a much lower price.

There are no gardens, so despite the wonderful Indian spring (English summer) weather there was nowhere to sit out for a drink or for lunch.

When checking in we were offered two specific services, neither of which materialised, the dinner menu was limited and the food nothing special and at breakfast the buffet choice was a bit thin.

All in all pretty average and below par for Oberoi.

Simla however is a delight for one day. Walk from end to end (Viceregal Lodge to the Temple on the hill via the Ridge and back through the Lower Bazaar) and you'll be well exercised and have had a fascinating day. Try not to miss the guided tour of the Gaiety Theatre, on the Mall, especially as Michael Palin is making a return visit in September and you won't want to have missed it when he appears on stage in the programme!

The "Toy Railway" is a once in a lifetime experience - 6 hours rattling up the narrow gauge track with ever widening vistas to admire. Take your own food and drink as there is no service on the train. One couple had arranged to disembark half way up and be driven the rest of the way. They had the experience but were in the hotel an hour before us, considerably less saddle sore! Even the locals say it is a Once in a Lifetime experience and we are driving back to Kalka to pick up the express to Delhi.

We are moving on to Wildflower Hall tomorrow, hoping that it will restore our faith in Oberoi as a reliable source of excellence in all aspects of the hotel business.

Room Tip: Ask for a Mountain view. Some of the alternatives have a concrete wall vista.

Dear Guest

I am disappointed that the location of the hotel did not appeal to you. The hotel is situated at the Ridge that was initially built to house only 3000 people. However due to the expansion of the city and being close to a lot of prominent government location’s one may feel amidst crowd. Though the loaction does play an advanatge as you may have noticed, as it allows guests to be at walking distance from most must see places. The road where the hotel is located is a heritage zone and although we are trying our best to repair certain old structures, we can only do so once it passes through certain committees.

I deeply regret that two request’s made by you got missed. The hotel strives at keeping high standards and on this occasion we have fallen below our expectations. I assure you that we would rectify them. I am happy to read that you liked the town.
Warm regards

We stayed in the Oberoi Cecil Hotel recently and can only praise it as one of the best hotels to stay in. The accomodation was first class and the staff couldn't have been more helpful and welcoming. The food was varied and consistently good. The amenities such as the pool and therapies centre were first class and I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone.

Hotel is extremely comfortable and well maintained.
Staff are excellent and very well trained.
We have an Ayurvedic massage while we were there that was extremely relaxing and professional.

We stayed at the Cecil as part of Great Rail Journeys trip. On arrival, we were greeted with a warm welcome by staff after a long journey. Rooms were a good standard with lovely views. Breakfasts are cooked to order and a very wide range of foods available from full English to Indian style dishes. Nicely cooked and presented. Evening meal is a well stocked buffet. Try the local Sula wine. Inexpensive and very drinkable! Service was very good, despite hotel being busy during our stay.
As others have commented, the young man in the pool area is excellent and very helpful. He keeps the area spotless and provides fresh towels and bottles of water to swimmers. Some of the ladies in our group enjoyed treatments in the spa. I used the steam room which was very clean and VERY hot! Changing rooms spotless and again, free bottled water available.
Our trips out usually ended up in the town of Shimla and we would walk the approx one mile downhill route back to hotel. As others have said, there are several places of interest and good shopping. Tea in the cafe near the English church is a good option for people watching. Look out for Ajay the fireman with the fire brigade motor bike near scandal point! Very smart and used in the narrow streets.
Warning:do watch out for monkeys and don't leave windows open! Two members of our perty had monkeys enter the room this way. One room was trashed and monkeys made a mess. Hotel staff great at dealing with the situation.
One of our party was unwell during stay. Staff most helpful and concerned. Went out of their way to assist.
We loved Shimla and the Cecil was all part of an excellent overall experience that started from the toy train and ended at the town station for return journey.

Room Tip: Higher floors give better views towards the valley
