We usually stay here when we visit Shimla. Several years ago they improved their facility.
It was painted, new mattresses in the rooms, the bathrooms were redone. Had a very good hot shower there and a good sleep.

Location: At the ridge, a number of steep steps from the Ritz movie theater – plus: nice views and close to the main square and the mall, minus: at quite a distance from train station and bus station (like most nice hotels in Shimla), with lots of luggage the steep climb can be very exhausting as Shimla center is strictly pedestrian zone.

Room: Fairly big, very clean room with nice views. Bathrooms are shared but are probably the cleanest bathrooms in all of India, “Western” toilet (toilet paper for sale at reception), AC not necessary (mountain climate), no WIFI.

Service: Reception staff very friendly and helpful, good but early breakfast included, curfew between 10.00 and 10.30 p.m – be careful gate gets closed. Wake-up service, laundry, Internet, luggage storage, etc. for a small fee upon request at reception.Trekking and jeep safaris can also be booked through the in-house agent. Cash only.

Value for money: Pretty good – rather low rates but excellent value.

I stayed there for one night...The price is slightly expensive but given that it is peak season...it should be slightly inflated.

The bed is pretty good with the thick blankets if you are too cold.
Common Bathroom are well maintained...in fact the best I have seen in a few hostels...
Quite a few hidden cost like the wifi, heater...but it not of a problem...

Overall, I find it to be above average.

We stayed six nights at this hotel and price/quality is excellent. It is close to the Mall and the hotel arranges excursions and activities. To be recommended. Ask for Anil for trekking or climbing or rafting.

It was one of the cheapest we found. Despite this, the rooms were spacious and had very large beds. The beds had clean sheets, blankets and everything. The standard rooms have a shared bathroom, but these have hot water and are very clean as well.
Their is not always someone at the reception, but usually you will find someone very quickly and all the staff is very helpful and friendly. The main guy, Anil, who is usually by his 'magic table' is the most helpful person we've seen in Shimla so far.
The beds are good and so sleeping quality is good. But for light sleepers, dogs barking at night can keep you awake (in some rooms).
The carpet is a little bit dirty, but everything else is spotless, which is unheard of really for this price range.
The location is in the centre of Shimla, at the very top, giving you nice views and puts you close to everything without being in between busy streets.
You are close to everything in town, but all the adventure trips are quite a drive, so this can be a good or bad location depending on what you want.
There is a gym, for 50rp an hour. The machines are fairly old, but you can still get some decent workouts as there a some pretty heavy weights.
There are also two table tennis tables and two really nice snooker tables.

Room Tip: 19 has an amazing view

The hotel is situated in the centre of the city in nice victorian building.

I stayed in a very simple room without bathroom, but shared bathrooms are clean and comfortable.

Complimentary breakfast is very simple, but it's provided in charming dinning room.
