“One of our best memories of India!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 17, 2013

Thank you Madhavi and Rita (Mummy) for your wonderful hospitality, delicious gourmet food, interesting stories and dinner conversation, and welcoming us so warmly into your beautiful, relaxing and cozy home and garden. We felt so at home and comfortable. Even though it is about a 15 minute walk away from Shimla town centre, it is worth the peace and tranquility, friendship and TLC so generously offered at Sunnymead. All the rooms are lovely, quiet and cozy with comfortable beds and linens, seating areas, plenty of hot water and great views. Meals were fresh, with home grown, healthy ingredients and always an incredible gourmet experience presented with beautiful table settings. Madhavi is also wonderful about helping with travel arrangements and advice on local attractions. It truly was the perfect end to our India adventure, we feel we arrived as guests and left as friends. There is nothing further to say other than don't hesitate, just go, the rewards are numerous!

Room Tip: All the rooms are cozy, immaculately clean and well appointed with beautiful antique furnishings. T...

Madhavi Bhatia is a soul of Sunnymeade and she truly rocks!

Sunnymeade offers you great location, peaceful surroundings, delicious food and a super duper host. Madhavi and her mother, Rita aunty are awesome hosts. They fascinates you with their travel stories, experiences and Sunnymead history.

Rooms are clean, cosy and very neatly done.

Food is superlative. Madhavi is certainly to be classified as masterchef.

Service is top notch.

Don't just read this, experience the hospitality of Sunnymead. It's difficult to find in Shimla.

We absolutely loved our stay at Sunnymead - everything from Madhavi and Medu's delicious cooking, the cosy fireplace and the Indian-infused cottage charm was simply perfect. Madhavi was a wonderful hostess, full of suggestions and wisdom for us lost Australian travelers! The only possible negative of Sunnymead is that no other place will be able to compare.

And that sums up what I feel about Sunnymead, about the dynamo by the name of Madhavi who is the heart, soul and engine behind sunnymead, about her mom, who regaled us with fascinating tales of her travels and travails and kept us away from lesser things we had planned for our alone time, about the dogs with complicated names, and about Moti Lal, who is a reincarnation of a estate manager from genteel English countryside, reborn in Shimla a hundred years later, and the reason why Sunnymead blooms with flowers in season.

Lets talk food. Madhavi is a Masterchef, with a passion for cooking. And for feeding. Say no to her food, and you can see her smile vanish and disappointment set in. On our first night, I counted a seven course meal. Every night, it got more elaborate, till finally the main course consisted of a kid lamb roasted for - yes - over four hours in the oven, and tasting like I have never eaten anything in the world. We soon adopted the rule of eating a heavy breakfast, (baked egg with cheddar, gouda & chicken ham, fresh bread, three types of exotic jams, bacon, museli, fruits), staying empty the entire day, and then this feast meant for Gods in the evening.

Food that would cost about 1500 rupees in a restaurant anywhere was charged 450 rupees. With top class ingredients which cost a bomb. Fresh baked bread and cookies and cakes everyday. And very nearly free of any charge.

The place itself is over hundred years old, and restored with such painstaking love, it takes your breath away. It is littered with thousands of books all over, fine china from England, stuff that is really antique and irreplaceable. We ate like some country squires with silver and china which is better off insured and under lock and key.

A real fireplace, lit every night in your room, in the dining room, in the sitting lounge. Its luxury meant to spoil you.

The dogs who insist on playing with you. If you are not a dog person, don't read further.

A haughty cat, who will take your ego a peg down with her attitude towards humans.

I can go on and on, but you get the message. If you go to Shimla, and stay anywhere other than Sunnymead - well, good for you. You probably won't know what you missed, and you probably won't deserve to stay there either.

Room Tip: The only double room. The other rooms are twin bed configuration.

Nothing prepares you for the wonder that is Sunnymead...not the lovely photographs...not the rave reviews on trip advisor...not your wildest wishes!

We arrived at Sunnymead not really sure what to expect and yet Sunnymead far exceeded any expectations we ought to have had. A short walk from the main gate brought us to a fairy-tale cottage...replete with beautiful furnishings, a meandering garden, three dogs and a cat! The home has been painstakingly and lovingly restored and furnished. The bedrooms are warm and cozy. Books abound everywhere...and one can't help but heave a sigh of quiet relief...five days of charming bliss, rest, relaxations and loads of good food. How much better can a holiday get?

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay...as did our two teenaged children. Madhavi is truly a wonderful host, and she took every opportunity to ply us with delicacies from the kitchen that seemed more like a magician's lair! Home made quiches, tea cakes, pies, warm bread, pastas, et al vied for our palate with the most delicious Indian cooking.

We spent happy and lazy evenings by the fireplace...rambling thoughts and deep conversations made for some good times. Madhavi recommended an easy trek to Taradevi...very worth it.

A supreme holiday experience...hope to visit again soon.

The moment you enter the premises...you are taken away from the hustle & bustle of Shimla.Very well maintained heritage bungalow with lovely neat and well kept rooms with classy victorian type furniture.....loads of books.
Madhavi is a great host & i was fortunate to meet her lovely equally hospitable parents ( they were on a week's vacation ).
The food is excellent and you will surely over eat like i did. You could relax in your room or read a book in the lush green open....or sack up in the sofa.....loads of choice.
Every detail in the bungalow has been painstakingly restored and maintained and you can sense it when you stay there.

The location is good as you're away from the maddening crowd....yet you can take one of the paths opposite the house and a gentle climb up leads you to the mall road.

There are very few properties like Sunnymead in India, leave alone Shimla. It is that good. We stayed there last week and thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it.

Be warned that you'll come back heavier. You are constantly tempted with splendid meals, forcing you to overeat.

Be also warned that you'll not want to leave - they make you feel so much at home in such a beautiful property that its almost a voluntary house arrest. The service is flawless, warm and cheerful without being formal. You're almost forced into believing that this idyll can last forever.

Not only my wife and me, but our 7 year old son thoroughly enjoyed being there, what with their overflowing bookshelves and quirky, friendly dogs for company. What a marvellous experience and what committed owners!

I wish them the very best with all my heart.
