The views from the garden were wonderful and we enjoyed our visit. We would have liked to be able to see more of the Lodge, however, appreciate that it is used for students. The day we visited it was quiet up there and one could imagine how wonderful it would have been to get away to Shimla for the summer.

Thank helhed

When I was planning to visit Shimla, I checked out places to be hanged around. Apart from The Mall and Kufri, Viceregal Lodge was the main places of attraction which I planned to visit. I dedicated one complete day for this place. The visit to this place was not only satisfactory but was awesome. I would recommend everyone to visit this attraction. This place opens in the morning and closes at 5 PM. Make sure u keep three to four hours with u. When visiting keep in mind that there is lunch time also. Entry Fee for Adult is Rs.30, Child Rs.10 and Camera Rs.20. For foreigners the entry fee is different, but little extra. If u want to explore the historical era of British India, this place is must visit. Nothing can be compared to its grandiose. The whole Shimla is witness of British Raj's Magnificent Era and Viceregal Lodge is center to it. The whole Indian Sub-Continent was ruled from this Building from Mar to Oct. Viceregal Lodge was built from 1884 to 1888. The guide is available free of cost and he takes tour of about half an hour. If u don't have private taxi in Shimla, don't ever dare to venture out on Sunday as this place is little far away from The Mall. From Monday to Saturday, plenty of taxis are available from the CTO(Mall Road) to Viceregal Lodge and takes only Rs.10 per person one way. For return u stroll back by walk and don't wait for taxi, as the taxis passes by this place and u won't get any seat. The entrance hall, the library, the visitor's room, billiards room etc attracts special attraction. The Viceroy's Chair, and the Table on which various rounds of discussions held for granting freedom to India is kept in the rooms for visitors to see. You can feel the aura of magnificence. Just go and take a tour to this place and it will not disappoint u.

Lovely scenery, but beware you have to leave your car at the bottom of the hill and it's a long walk up a steep gradient. Wasnt impressed with the cafe - staff not falling over themselves to serve paying customers and not very clean. Had a lovely coffee though by a vendor at the side of the lodge - who was extremely friendly and helpful. Guides in the lodge not got a good grasp of the english language - hard to understand his diction - overall, Viceregal Lodge was value for money - despite a thunderstorm on the day. Views were spectacular and the gardens surrounding are very well kept. Please visit if you have a spare few hours.

This reminiscent of colonial era is a must visit when in Shimla. The guide is experienced and the full indoor tours are provided in pre defined times. Its now called the I"ndian Institute of Advance Studies ".
