“Just Another Structure Next to India Gate”
Reviewed May 27, 2014

This review is late. I saw the Canopy when I visited India Gate. Nothing much to write about it since it is empty. Good for a photograph.

“Next to India Gate”
Reviewed May 18, 2014

This 20m high canopy sits prominently at the centre of a hexagonal public park, with six paths radiating from it. It is five minutes walk from India gate. Originally housing a statue of George V it remains empty as people decide upon an appropriate replacement.

“Empty Canopy - also known as the Gate Canopy next to the India Gate”
Reviewed September 8, 2013

The Gate Canopy, also referred to as the Empty Canopy, is situated near the India Gate at the end of the Rajpath in the heart of New Delhi. While it is simply a small bare canopy, which pales in comparison to the large India Gate, it does have a slightly interesting history and offers pause for thought in regard to its symbolism of an India without British rule.

The Gate Canopy was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1936 and hosted the marble statue of Sir George V, Emperor of India, until its removal in 1947 upon the declaration of independence from Britain.

It seems that from time to time there have been plans for adding a statue of Gandhi have come and gone numerous times yet the Canopy remains vacant. Perhaps this is because of the symbolism the Empty Canopy represents in regard to India's Independence, that being the British leaving India, leaving her to rule on her own.

“Canopy”
Reviewed July 16, 2013

I remember my school days when there use to be the George V statue in red stone at this place and then it was removed just before 1969 AD probably to install the Mahatma Gandhi 's statue to celebrate the birth centenary but it was not and since then it is like this , one can have a beautiful view of it in the arch of India Gate from the other side of India Gate while driving on Rajpath towards it .
This place is having lots of fountains and artificial water bodies and green lawns which adds to its beauty in the evenings with very impressive lights . It is also one of the picnic spot for Delhi people to enjoy ice cream in late nights . The Modern Art Museum , National Museum , Children's Park , India Gate, National Stadium , New Delhi Courts, Purana Qila , Zoo are all at a 5-10 minutes walking distance from here.

“An empty canopy.”
Reviewed May 23, 2013

This empty canopy used to contain the statue of King George V, but the statue was removed when India got its Independence.
Now it's just an empty canopy near the India gate.
You can have a great photo-op and include both the India gate and the canopy at the same shot, as if the canopy is under the gate (which it isn't, of course).
Again, the canopy itself is not particularly interesting, but its combination with the impressive India gate makes a lovely site and a nice 15-minutes visit.
