“A beautiful hotel creating the magic of old world charm coupled with gracious Indian hospitality.”
Reviewed June 24, 2010

I am a tour operator and recently took a group on tour to India. The first hotel is always very important as it sets the stage for the following days. This hotel did not disappoint in any area. From the moment you are greeted with a beautiful garland until you leave you feel special. Our every need was looked after, even to the point of finding a room for us on short notice as we had a guest speaker arrive. The food was impeccable, the service was grand. Room service fast and I loved the idea of getting my shoes shined each evening and ready for the next day when I woke up. The rooms - we all had the Claridges Rooms and they were spacious, warm and very posh ammenities and had a balcony that we could relax on. All the balconies faced onto the pool area surrounded by trees and flowers. It was a magical start to our tour.

Here is a short bit on the hotel that I wrote from our tour recap which you will find here...
http://www.icangarden.com/pix/India2010-1.cfm

Here I am, in a city of 16 million, sitting on my balcony and all I can hear are the birds and classical music. The sounds of the city are very faint indeed, yet this beautiful hotel is right in old Delhi. This is heaven, perfect weather in March too. A breeze blowing gently to cool my tea, a hand tied packet of tea leaves sitting in the cup. It’s a high elevation Darjeeling blend and it is wonderful and soothing to my soul. Overlooking the pool area in this glorious hotel called The Claridges, I am seeing that they are preparing for something special this evening – a wedding party, or cocktail party – it’s too early to tell but they are thorough. The chairs are being draped in meticulous and sparkling white covers and there are many eyes overseeing the transformation. I do find out later that it is a very special 25th Wedding Anniversary party they are expecting. The guests will enjoy sitting around the pool area tonight with the lights dancing off the water of the pool and hundreds of tiny white lights in the trees.

Outside this sanctuary it is hustle and bustle as cars make their way through the traffic but here, all is peaceful and quiet. The perfect balance to a tour in India. The Claridges was a good choice for many reasons. The first being that it is in Lutyens Delhi. This area although being in the heart of Delhi, is located in a green, lush and tranquil part of the city that has grown up with history, the kind of history that keeps the old and historical because it knows how important it is to have this legacy.

It also fits with what I want my tour guests to experience while here. A beautiful hotel creating the magic of old world charm coupled with gracious Indian hospitality. I wanted 5 star and Heritage for this tour. Sitting here one cannot help but feel relaxed surrounded by beautiful gardens all around the hotel, but also amazed at the bird life fluttering by. Green and red parakeets nearby sitting in trees not 10 feet from my balcony and when they fly their long tails flutter behind them.

Nice hotel.... I stayed there for 2 nights during our recruiting event. It's a pretty nice hotel in a very good location, everything is almost 10minutes drive in a traffic free area.

Very apt for business travellers. The hotel is beautiful and magnificent. Ofcourse, being a five star hotel, it has all the facilities imaginable albeit expensive. The service is excellent and the staff is polite and helpful. Their restaurants are simply amazing, specially the restaurant Sevilla. The food is delicious and a lot of variety is available. The rooms are spacious and elegant. Overall,I had a wonderful experience during my stay and would definitely go again.

I come always to 'The Calridges' when I come to Delhi. It is a place where I can escape from that overwhelming city and my work. The service is prompt, the staff is very friendly. The pool is surrounded by the hotel building, but that is what makes that it is quite...at least. The spa and health centre are very nice too. Unconvenient is the fact the you can go there only at certain hours, depending if you are a woman or a man.

The rooms are big and I like those with a terrace. The food options are good : real indian, delicate asian, south european and at pickwicks the have great sandwiches and other smaller snacks.

definitively a nice place to stay

We have visited this hotel twice in March/April 2010. The first stay was for one week, the second stay, a few days later, for three night.
The arrival and the first impression of this wonderful looking hotel was very good. Registration check-in went smoothly. Maybe the person at the desk was the most professional we saw in this hotel.

The room during the first stay was excellent, very large and very modern and clean. It provided all facilities that are necessary. .. just the huge amount of pillows that cover the bed is unnecessary, but this may be considered as matter of taste.

The housekeeping staff and room service was extremely gentle, kind, polite and professional. Nothing compared to the staff at the reception.

The receptionists were not hospitable at all. Several times we were the only guest in front of the desk and because they were finishing another task before, they did not even look at us or mention a “Hello Sir,Madam, just a moment please”, or “I am with you in a minute”. We had to interrump them in their duties to get assistance. When they were willing to help, we noticed a superior attitude towards us. A kind of arrogancy. Not normal. We did not treat the reception staff with arrogancy or superiority to receive this kind of attitude back. The ladies are kind of Divas or something... We sometimes felt like the reception staff would prefer to be guest than host. They were distant and not willing to help. We were almost scared to disturb them.
We also felt that the staff that had a very good level of english was very arrogant in comparison with the staff that does not have this level of english, that was very kind, smily and helpful, like the room service, some waiters or the housekeeping.
Management should know, that the reception is the heart of the hotel and if already there the service is missing, what kind of impression is the guest going to take out of it?
We also felt that decisions are not taken proactively. The staff must consult the Manager and the Manager must consult a decision maker Manager... It takes too much time and the real message gets lost in the way.

During our second stay, we were given a room at the back of the house, which was extremely noisy. There was a banquet the first night and half the night we had a terrible noise like moving chairs and beds, loud voices (later we found out that behind our room there is a kind of dorm room for the staff). We called the auditor lady 3 times that night but she could not help us or tell us what was going on there. Again, she had to see with the Duty Manager. She was not able to take any decision and solve the problem within due time. We also talked to the night manager but nothing happend. The next day we called the duty manager during the day and apparently nothing had been communicated to them from our room. We were expecting an apology or a solution to the noisy room where it was impossible to sleep, but we have never heard anything again. This is just inacceptable.

When we asked for an early wake up call, this one came 20 minutes too late. And the reception not even apologised for it.

At the end of our second stay we asked to postpone the checkout time. We paied the half room rate and could postpone our checkout until 4pm. We asked if it was possible to postpone until 7pm. Reception without any tact and flexibility said that if they accept, they will charge us a full day rate. I also know this from hotels, but there are always exeptions. And: we had spent 12 nights in this hotel before!!

About the Restaurants and food
The Breakfast
The selection of products is great and the service is there. The only underline is that several times therewas nobody to welcome the guest and lead them to the table. The guest had to do it themselfs.
By lack of place we had a breakfast in the First Floor, the service and food was excellent.

Sevilla Restaurant
The service in the Spanish restaurant was very good. Good Atmosphere and Good Tapas. I am half spanish and have lived the Spain for 10 years. The red open whine was too warm. The wine was replaced straight away. That was a very nice proof of proactivity.

Aura Bar
The bar is very nice and trendy. The staff is always there and the DJ is a good DJ for the younger generation.

The Garden Bar
We think that the staff from the bar in the garden does not pay enough attention at the guest arriving at one of the the ten tables. In two ocassions we had to go to the bar and ask for the drinks, although we were the only guests .

Room Service
Concerning Room Service the only complaint is that the French Fries were always cold. Except that, we were happy with the quality of food and the service.

In conclusion
The claridges product is very nice at first sight, regarding the facilities, the decor and the location. But the staff at the reception does not have the service level they should have to be where they are. A lack of communication in general between the many different staff and a lack of decision making from the Managers (local) is very much seen .
We did not feel respected and taken seriously - we will never return to this hotel again.

The Claridges is a beautiful hotel, but more for business or mature travelers. It is not located nearby to anything within walking distance, but in a very safe upscale neighborhood.

I wouldn't recommend eating there, at least at Pickwick's, because the food was average and we even found hair in 2 of the dishes!
