“Memorable stay at Taj Palace New Delhi!!”
Reviewed November 28, 2013

I spent three night at this hotel in September 2013. It was such a wonderful experience. The staff are polite and they seem to know what you need all the time. The check in was short and pleasant. My bags got to my room as soon as I got there. loved the Masala tea every evening! The restaurants downstairs were great . If ever I go back to Delhi I know where to stay.

Room Tip: Room facing the swimming pool has a great mountainous view

The Taj Palace was a welcome haven in the hustle of Delhi---the rooms were beautiful and the service exceptional without being too much in your face. The garden and pool area were well kept with attentive staff on hand and the hotel shop is not to be missed. The food was always very good with a large selection of dishes and good service.Overall a very good location in the embassy district of New Delhi.

Service was shoddy. Check-in took ages and despite that and a reminder at the time of check in, they managed to avoid entering my stay for Inner Circle points (which I had to follow up on). And, despite asking them to hurry (as I had a scheduled dinner engagement), they insisted on debiting my card at the time of check-in (for which they already had the details, provided at the time of booking). The receptionist checking me in was more interested in asking me multiple times if i would have a guest staying over, which wasnt even the case. I did mention some of this in a mail to Taj inner circle, but wasn't provided with much of an apology either. Had a bad reservation experience with Taj Coromandel earlier this year, which also I had mailed Taj about, but again did not receive a response. Someone really needs to crack the whip somewhere in the Taj echelons of power.

The location is decent. The food is food - have tried it on past occasions - particularly the Indian food. The building and the rooms were quite decent, though a little old. Costs are on par with regular delhi 5 stars.

Dear Guest,

Greetings from Taj Palace, New Delhi!

This has reference to your comments with regard to the way you were dealt with by the Reception associate on your arrival at the hotel. Please be assured that this is not the philosophy or the standard that can be associated with the Taj and the concerned associate has been counseled and sent for refresher training. I am also checking as to why your mail to Taj InnerCircle was unanswered.

I deeply apologise for the inconvenience caused to you and hope you will give us another chance to make amends.

ok. here we go again, with a review of an overnight stay at the fabulous Taj property. Per usual land at the hotel property early in the night (i have developed a great liking for Emirates), clearly in no mood for niceties. At that time, my grouchy visage just wants some hot tea and a pillow.
The bell hop gets my name from the hotel car pickup, and announces it at the reception. quietly. when he did all that, i do not know. The only recollection I have is of him getting the luggage through the X-ray screeners, while I tried to straighten out my legs in the early Delhi chill.
By the time I am at the reception, my paperwork is laid out. The perfect gentleman at the counter tells me that he is upgrading me to Club Class, whatever it means. Within three minutes of entering the premises I am in my room on the seventh floor. So much for quiet efficiency.
The room is pretty awesome, i have got some pictures for you below. The bathroom is not very spacious, and my guess is that the size and configuration of the bathroom depends on the topology of the room itself.
Aha, this is one of ye olde world hotels which still dishes out shampoos and lotions in small plastic bottles. Wowie. mental note to self: swipe all these bottles. Further note: these guys don't have that fantastic citrus aftershave that the Taj in Mumbai had.
Anyway, to get my laptop going, i need to bump up the room lighting. That has been my nemesis in recent years. Earlier, it used to be the hot and cold water mixers which always grinded my gears, now I see each and every hotel has its own version of lighting control.
Can't figure out the main console. Fire the flashlight on my phone to ping all the switches. Mentally, i am sing-song, like Dee Dee, Dexter's sister: "OOH, what does this button do?" Reference here is to Dexter on Cartoon Network (anyone remember that beautiful series?), and not to Debra Morgan.
Finally, on button does the trick, the room lights up. More surprises. This is such a well furnished room...long exhale. Wait what is this on the far corner? See the pix below.
I am telling you, I have yet to see such thoughtfullness anywhere in the world, not even in the Palm Jumeirah or Armani in Dubai. I just made a very unmanly--and loud--sound. Doze off. The only thing I have to do the next day is to interview a senior resource for our cloud business, and then I can happily go home to my parents.
You guys know (ok, some of you who asked me why I chose the PennylessinNepal handle) that I am an Indian. Heavy, thick-set face Indian, who looks somewhere between a double-fed Sheikh and a vodka-guzzling Russian (hint hint: beer belly).
So, it is a week before Diwali, the biggest festival in India. Be in our Dublin development centre, old parents in Delhi. Guilt pangs: I should be with my parents. You know, what if this is their last Diwali?, more maudlin thoughts.
Our HR chief is a humongously affable polish lady. One day, over lunch, I tell her "I miss my parents. They are not going to last many more Diwalis." "Here, here, doktor, don't say such things...How happy they will be to know that you think of them all the time etc. What was the last time your son visited them? Ooh, they would have loved to have him over the vacations..."
Next day evening, she thunders in my room (I am not expecting anyone, and how come my secretary did not announce her? big question mark on my face). Doktorr, here I want you to go home to your parents for deewaali--in the strange, beautiful way that Polish-German immigrants can pull off when they are cheerful. What's this, I ask. There is dis guy i wanchu to meet in Delhi. Actually, [xxxx} vertical, is looking seriously at him. {This guy} has met him and {this guy}, I wanchu to meet him. and you can spend the rest of the week with your parents.

total awkwardpenguin.jpeg. You guys know these memes, right?
So back to the Taj. My room is on the club floor, I still can't figure what's extra because this kind of exquisite sophistication comes naturally to the Taj group. Even St. James Court Palace hotel in London, where I myself was interviewed to be hired, had this great taste, in everything. From the bed linen to the curtains, the bath towels, the bath robe, and the tea selection, everything whispers quiet elegance. I tell you this: this is elegance that cannot be acquired in a business school or hotel management school.
This elegance is so refined that it engulfs you like prayer, it can only come from the heart.
Next morning, when i see the room in the morning sun, it hit me that this Taj finally could finally excel the standards of the Taj Palace in Mumbai.
You ask me why? Boys and girls, I have no answer why. I cannot put it in words. Sometimes, it is not this set of elements that matter but just the fact that all elements have come to the same place at the same time. I can only offer you these pictures.

Room Tip: Pool facing rooms.

Dear Guest,

Greetings from Taj Palace, New Delhi!

This has reference to your very descriptive, elaborate and educative comments that we have received. It is very interesting for us to read your perspective with a liberal dose of humour.
As you can read, at Trip Advisor we receive many compliments but very few guests have been able to touch up the one thing which is dearest to us, which we call Tajness. As you have put it, “this set of elements that matter but just the fact that all elements have come to the same place at the same time” is what has come close to defining this word called - ‘Tajness”. This is why no two Taj Hotels, even of almost of the same vintage, in the same city, are the same in terms of their interiors, décor, elements, but yet have only one intangible, unseen, only felt, perceived – the quality of Tajness. This quality which can be elaborated as a combination of warmth, friendliness, courtesy, helpfulness and which possibly evokes the feeling of trust, and is far more important to us than expensive hardware, gilded finishes, opulence, pomp and show.

Thank you for bringing this to my notice and hopefully our guests reading this review would also consistently perceive this when they stay at Taj Hotels.

With best regards,

Stayed for 3 separate nights in 3 different rooms. All good but Club room was exceptional. Beautiful hotel immaculately kept. Staff were brilliant and couldn't do enough; food was very good, particularly breakfast. Not cheap but not extortionate for the quality of the surroundings and standard of service. If we returned to Delhi would definitely stay again.

Stayed a night in November. Hotel was packed and got reservation with some difficulty. However even the standard room with breakfast and standard wireless connectivity cost me Rs. 15,000 ++. This is more than twice the price that I paid a week ago at Hotel Lalit - which incidentally is more centrally located. Taj Palace is however closer to the Airport.
The Service is extremely good - friendly and courteous and staff is genuinely out to assist in making your stay comfortable - be it swiftly and silently picking up all your luggage the moment you arrive, ensuring check-in efficiently and smilingly, being responsive to your needs and even the restaurant staff quietly but surely attends to your needs. Full Marks to Each and Every Taj Person I Encountered!
The Hotel may need some refurbishing - a colleague of mine - who incidentally checked into a Suite - had a disturbing experience of lights unexpectedly blinking on and off - almost like a Disco! At 4.30 am!! The Management was rightly apologetic, but my colleague had a disturbed night and sleep loss. The Hotel would do well to undertake an Audit of all it's Basic Infrastructure - else the problem could balloon out of control!

Room Tip: Take some time out to have a Leisurely Breakfast here - the spread is luxurious!

Dear Guest,

Greetings from Taj Palace, New Delhi!

Thank you for your kind feedback. Incidentally Taj Palace is uniquely located in Lutyens, Delhi which makes all the Government Ministries, Prime Minister’s Secretariat, Embassies accessible in a shorter time span than the hotel that you have named. At the same time, we are only 10 – 15 minutes away from the international terminal. Additionally, Taj Palace is situated in the greenest part of the city, overlooking the Western ridge and reserve forest. This is a benefit that no other hotel in the city can boast of.

We thank you for your compliments with regard to our service and will ensure that your kind words reach our staff.

Finally, the malfunctioning of lights in your colleague’s room was brought to my attention and we were able to track down the root cause of this problem which was caused due to frequent electricity outages, that resulted in the module of that room getting tripped. This has been addressed since then, by modifying the load distribution in all the rooms.

Service "par excellence"! Basically you only have to let go and embrace the omnipresent, friendly and supportive service. The room was great with an inviting view on the pool. The business lounge was very accommodating and provided a pleasant environment to work in. The fitness is very well equiped with more than enough free floor space to confuct my customary exercises. The pool is large enough to swim some serious and unhindered milage. No one seems to swim. Room and butler service was very good and in trying not to be repetitive the food was as the reader expects "Caressingly palatable, despite its sincerely appreciated intrinsic spicyness". Highly recommended, and I shall definitively return.
