“OK but could be anywhere...”
Reviewed May 24, 2010

I stayed in this hotel on business, and also stayed in the Taj Hotel in the same week. No comparison. The Taj was amazing, but Le Meridien is just a big soulless box, that could have been anywhere in the world. The rooms were fine, although the soundproofing was not as good as it could be, and you could hear traffic noise from outside and also noise from the central lobby, around which all the rooms are located.
The service was not great, the 'turndown service' never took place although twice someone actually came in to my room and said that was what they had come to do. I left them to it, and the room was untouched when I returned.
The lighting in the rooms is difficult to work, too many switches and different options, none of which seemed to be just right.
The breakfast service was a bit hit and miss, the buffet food was good enough but the staff were difficult to get hold of for tea, coffee etc.
And the only time I felt at all unwell during my 8 days in Delhi was after eating in the hotel's very expensive Monsoon restaurant.
If you want to spend this sort of money, far better to spend it at the Taj!!

We were on our way to Simla and stayed at the Le Meridien in Delhi before and after our journey north. The hotel is very minimalist in design, but to the degree that it feels cold and characterless, albeit of a high standard. You have no sense, inside the hotel, of being in India as opposed to any other place in the world, so the atmosphere of the hotel somehow feels rather flat. Design has taken precedence here..seating on the ground floor of the central atrium, for example, looks impressively arty but is in fact uncomfortable to sit on. However every part of the hotel is spotlessly clean, cool and smart.
The rooms have excellent facilities as you would expect for this class of hotel and they were all in excellent condition, but all the dark wood furnishing including the uncompromisingly hard wood flooring, made the rooms feel dark and sombre, and again minimalist, and not places you wanted to linger in. Also we had room 532 which had an unattractive view of the back of another building which was very close...so ask for a room with a view of city.
The pool side area is very basic and uninviting, with no facilities such as poolside bar landscaping, plants etc, and in fact was closed at the beginning of our stay for renovation (why did they choose to close it at the hottest time of the year (45 deg C) in Delhi?).
The bar in the atrium looks more like a slick nightclub, with everything coloured black and the drinks are very expensive, and at 11pm it was almost deserted.
The standard of service from the staff was generally excellent, though some of the reception staff could seem a little cool and condescending at times. The bed and breakfast rate we paid for was pretty good, but after that, predictably, all the extras in the hotel are extremely expensive..e.g mini bar snacks, drinks in the bar, internet and phone charges etc.
Overall it is a very comfortable hotel with all the facilities you would expect, but I found the minimalist atmosphere oppressive, and would look at other options in New Delhi as there are many similar hotels there.

We started our Indian tour in Delhi and were very pleased to be in such a well appointed, comfortable Hotel. It is perfectly situated and one is able to walk to many sights and well as hop on a tuk-tuk to other sights a bit further away. Our room was very comfortable and provided every amenity as well as a superb view of the Parlimentry buildings and the wonderful trees that abound in New Delhi. Breakfasts were amazing with every taste catered for, but we only ate in the Hotel for dinner once as it was very pricey, so opted for local resturaunts, where the food is just as good, and sometimes better at half the price. The staff are courteous and attentive and quickly respond th queries and requests. A hotel we would not hesitate to recommend.

The hotel has received substantial and smart modernisation of public areas and restaurants over the last 12 months, and a re-branding of the customer-facing staff uniforms, so the offer is very smart, and the rooms in good condition and comfortable. We had transferred allegience away, 15 months ago to the much sharper Lalit, due to lazy and sloppy service in the Meridien; but now have tried Meridien again as Lalit has escalated significantly in price. To be honest, this is a competent and smart hotel, well located, but still let down to a significant extent by less competent and of course, poorly lead and managed staff. It is somewhat picky, I know, but in this price category, you can weary of asking for a pizza with added chilli, watch it being written down, hear it being read back, and receiving it without chilli, then sending it back. Warm white wine, thumbs put over opened wine bottles, forgetting to bring promised coffee, delivering the wrong omelette, and so it goes on. Each of course with an uninterested 'sorry sir' as if this makes it all right. They just need to recruit sharper staff and get some managers in who have a passion for service, as they have in the Lalit - it's not difficult.

The Meridien Delhi is a very good high-end business hotel, but suffers from an ailment common to so many new hotels today: an almost complete lack of character. Everything works as it should here: the service is attentive, there are plenty of good restaurants, the rooms are modern and comfortable. But unless you look out your window, there is nothing to suggest that you are New Delhi rather than in Tokyo or Mexico City. If you are on a business trip this is usually par for the course, but if you are on holiday it would be a disappointment. The Taj Mahal Delhi, for example, is outdated compared to the Meridien, but has charm and character in spades.
The swimming pool was out of service when I stayed here, which was disappointing. The gym is of a reasonable size and has good equipment, but the two guys who are supposed to be looking after it were glued to a TV watching sports every single time that I went to the gym during the week that I stayed there.
Be warned about the business centre - it is ridiculously overpriced. One Euro per page to print something from the computer? Give me a break. And the Club Lounge, which is on the 20th floor, was dark and gloomy. I wouldn't pay extra for it.
A final warning relates to the architecture of the building. All the rooms in the hotel are arranged along balconies which run along a massive 20-storey high central atrium. So, if you are scared of heights, make sure that you ask for a room on the lower floors.
