“Lovely and quiet guest house”
Reviewed January 3, 2013

Lovely and quiet guest house located close to lots of excellent restaurants and bars in nearby Hauz Khas Village. Rooms are really spacious and very clean and the staff are very friendly - I was unwell during my stay and was treated very kindly.

Would recommend if you are looking for a small, quiet guest house to retreat after a day's work or sight seeing.

An unusually located (1st floor apartment) in a very residential street, 3 bedroom “hotel”. Quite difficult to find, including for taxis, with no external signs that it is a hotel, as it is not declared as one. Drew, the owner is friendly, but severely overcharges for airport transfers, at 1000R compared to 400-500 on the pre-paid Delhi Taxi stand. Location is good, and quiet, a safe neighbourhood with Hauz Khas market 10 minutes walk away, and Green Park Metro station 15 minutes walk away. I felt safe walking around here, even late at night. Not many restaurants near by, but hotel offers dinner for 300R a night, which is quite a lot. Breakfast offers an extensive selection of western style dishes: cereal, toast, fried egg, fresh fruit and tea, although they may do Indian on request.
We (2 girls) stayed in the front room (twin) for 3 weeks. The beds are very hard. The fridge does not work, and no extensive range of channels on the TV. Good clean room, with very nice bathroom (with a separate shower!). Balcony overlooks road, and is the noisiest of the rooms, which is less than ideal if you are a light sleeper, but is still relatively quiet compared to the majority of Delhi.
Internet is available, and worked most of the time. There were only occasional power cuts, very good for Delhi. Hot water is available through an individual boiler system, which you have to turn on 1 hour in advance (not 20mins as the hotel information says), and is enough for 2 very short showers, at a push
The price, at 3300R per night is quite a lot of the quality of the accommodation, but seems comparable to other guest houses in the area. Drew, the owner is friendly and has a lot of advice to give, and is generally helpful booking taxis etc. However, he enjoys inappropriately watching adult explicit material in the living room, which is a little bit inappropriate. For this reason, despite previous reviews I would not recommend this accommodation for single female travels. Additionally, the hotel is staffed by 2 male staff who speak very little English but help you out whenever possible. You are encouraged to leave your room unlocked, as they only have 1 key for the door, so that the attendants can come in and make your bed in the morning, etc, and turn it down at night. Remember to bring a lock for your suitcase, and do not leave any valuables out/ on display. On one occasion, I came back to find that my lock had been fiddled with on my suitcase, so beware.
Summary advantages: clean house and room, good shower. Free wifi, good neighbourhood, near to AIIMS hospital (where we were working) and the metro line.
Summary disadvantages: no Terrace/ garden, slightly dubious staff, very hard beds, have to leave room unlocked.

Room Tip: Avoid twin room: very hard beds!

serenedelhi, Owner at Serene Delhi, responded to this review, May 8, 2013
I would like to respond to a few of the specifics listed in the guests review, to advise and inform them the following:

1) The guest must realize that if a private taxi is going from its stand to the airport to receive the guest and then return to its stand after dropping the guest to the facility, it becomes a round trip charge, which obviously becomes more expensive than if the guest booked a one way cab at the pre-paid cab stand from the airport to the facility

2) If the guests found the beds hard and the room a little noisy, why did they contiune to stay in this room for three weeks without even a request for a change in room or the mattresses. No other guests, having used this particualar room in the past or post their stay, has ever mentioned that the water in the boiler takes more than 20 minutes to heat up and the hot water insufficient for an average / normal 10-15 minute shower.

3) I dont quite understand what the guests meant by their suitcase locks having been tampered with. In plain and simple English, the word tamper means an attempt / interfer to make a forceful entry. If there were no external marks / signs of the locks being forcefully opened, then on what basis can the guest accuse the staff of tampering with their suitcase locks and if they did suspect such an act by the staff, whcy did they not bring it to my notice there and then.

4) I would like to remind the guests, that after their first weeks stay, the tariff was reduced to Rs. 3,000/- per night and not Rs. 3,300/- as mentioned in the review. Would they like to confirm this ???

In general, if the Guests were at any point feeling unsafe of their personal well being and of their belongings, why did they stay the enitre three week period of their time in New Delhi at my facility. They should have instead found some alternate accommodation immediately for their own peace of mind and comfort.

Serene Delhi is just as its name suggests. A calm and welcoming guest house in the madness of Delhi. The rooms are clean with modern facilities, the staff are very friendly and accommodating, and the location is perfect.
The house is located in the Haus Khaz area, which may seem far from the city centre, but is very quickly and easily reached by metro. It is actually much nicer to stay in this area, as it is a short rickshaw drive to Haus Khaz village, which has loads of nice restaurants and bars in the evening.
What sets this place apart from the rest is the owner, Drew, who was extremely attentive, experienced and helpful. His recommendations were spot on and made a world of difference to our trip. There is nothing that can replace the service we experienced in this wonderful hotel. We used this house as a base, which was very convenient as you do not want to carry big bags of luggage when traveling, and Drew sorted our travel plans for us even on the days we weren't there!
Delhi just became a much more manageable city knowing that you have a safe, comfortable, clean and friendly hotel to go back to.
Thank you for a great stay!

When I arrived in Delhi I was passed through to Drew's place. The masala chai was fantastic - there was a woodpecker outside the window the first morning an I've never seen one before and the apartment is fabulous. Excellent location and Drew's great - he even helped us find our next homestay. A great beginning to our adventure. Sophie & Clare.

Serene Delhi is a great place to stay. The rooms are spotlessly clean, wifi and hot showers are available throughout the day, and the staff are helpful. The owner, Drew Puri, is very welcoming and would go out of his way to help you. It's in an excellent location, within walking distance to the Green Park metro station and also close to Hauz Khas village. I felt that this guesthouse was better value than other similarly priced places I've stayed in New Delhi.

I stayed for approximately a week at the Serene Delhi at the start and end of my 2.5 week holiday and work trip to India. I really enjoyed my stay and highly recommend this guest house to anyone visiting Delhi. The guest house is spotlessly clean, quiet and peaceful in Haus Khaz a lovely area. I was made to feel very welcome and at home at the Serene Delhi and Drew Puri, who owns and runs the guest house made every effort to help me with advice on places to go, local attractions, help with arranging taxis, transfers to Agra. Drew also kindly looked after some of our luggage as we headed north to visit the Punjab region. The bedrooms were very comfortably and reasonably priced in the lovely suburb of Haus Khaz..

It was very nice to also have the opportunity to meet other guests each morning over very tasty and substantial breakfasts cooked up by the very kind and helpful guest house team. The team were always kind and cheerful and as I stayed at the guest house over Divali the house was beautifully decorated with marigold garlands and candles and wonderful views from the balcony of the neighbourhood fireworks displays.

Haus Khaz village is a short rickshaw drive away ( 50 Rupee approx) and has numerous bars and lovely restuarants, definitely worth visiting. The guest house is also close to Green park metro station and we found the metro to be a very fast clean and convenient way to get around Delhi.

I recommend the Serene to everyone visiting Delhi for a short overnight visit or a longer stay. I know that Drew and his team will welcome you warmly to a home away from home in Delhi. Thank you to everyone for making my trip to Delhi so relaxing and enjoyable.

I just spent 4 days at this small, quiet, beautifully appointed guest house in the Hauz Khas area of Delhi. I live and work in India and have traveled extensively here and around the world, so I can say with some authority that the Serene conforms to very high standards for good value. It was comfortable, spotlessly clean and, best of all, beautiful, something that I don't always find even in better hotels here. Dhruv, the owner, was most helpful, as were the full-time staff. The breakfast was good and included in the rate. The neighborhood is convenient to transportation, restaurants, shopping and sight-seeing. The WIFI service was reliable and, overall, the Serene provided what I would expect from a quality hotel.

Room Tip: There are just a few rooms, but they all seem quiet and attractive.
