Background on Paharganj:

We ended up in the Pahar Ganj area by looking at different reviews from travelers (non-Indians) that this place is centrally located etc etc. We originally had a booking at the Canara Bank Paharganj Guest Home near the Hotel Mem International by getting a corporate rate.

The whole Paharganj area is a dump - even by Indian standards. We were shocked to enter the neighborhood and the Canara Bank facility with it common areas was the last straw!

We gladly lost our deposit at and checked into Mem as a last minute resort.

About Mem:

The hotel is probably the best in the Paharganj area. Decent by US standards. I looked at all the rooms in the hotel (mostly empty) and chose the "deluxe suite" which had like two king beds. The rooms in general were clean and the bathroom was super clean. Room service was also good and we didn't fall sick by eating their food. They don't have any decent restaurants in the area and we ended up going to Connaught Place for everything. The hotel guys were helpful and also haggled with the cab guys for giving us a good price on local tours. You got free newspapers and free wi-fi, whcih was a plus. Cable TV was an added bonus. On the flipside, I spotted a few small roaches in the room at night slipping into the crevices.

Bottomline:

Stay away from the Paharganj area if you are visiting Delhi. It is not worth the proximity to CP or any other place. Stay in any other area and if you are a tourist, you end up taking a cab anyway. It doesn't matter where you stay.

Room Tip: Do not stay in the Pahar Gunj area. Especially if you are out of town..

I arrived in Delhi after 2 weeks in India, at 5:30 am at the old Delhi station. I told a cab driver I wanted a hotel for the day near connaught place and he brought me to the mem. My room was okay, cable didn't work in the morning, but was fine at night. Took a shower at 10 And 6pm - no hot water - just tepid. Burnt out light bulbs, no toilet paper, and when I took my backpack to the front desk to have a lock cut off, the guy who took 30 seconds to do this favor followed me upstairs back to my room, apparently expecting a tip - I wouldn't tip for this in an american hotel. I prearranged to have a cab take me to the airport at 8'pm for 600rs but when I asked the front desk to call to make sure he was coming, they later asked me to pay 800 rs for the cab to them - I declined. Hotel is noisy, but with ear plugs I slept in the morning. Not very close to Connaught place area. Nearby grocery and liquor store within a block. I am sure there are many worse places to stay - I would look elsewhere first, but the Mem is okay.

Stayed in a family room for a couple of days during my delhi trip. Got a complimentary pickup from the airport. I have originally booked in Milan DX but was then told that this is their hotel as well and was assigned to this hotel, which was just opposite to Milan DX.
The rooms were new and good enough. But the hotel was pretty noisy with intercom kept in the hallway (opp. to the room) kept ringing past midnight and the staff were talking loudly.
Check-in was not smooth, not because of their fault. I was travelling only with a PAN card but they insisted without some proof of address they would not let me check-in. After a half-a-dozen phone calls and a lot of back and forth they checked us in. But the family was taken in to a room and were asked to relax while the process was going on.

Room service was good. The area is very crowded - pretty close to New Delhi Railway station, Connaught Place. The metro station (RKAshram Marg) was less than kilometer away. Overall, it was an okay place to stay if you plan to be out of the room most of the time.
