The Leela Palace New Delhi
Ranked #1 of 713 Hotels in New Delhi
Reviewed July 4, 2013

I'm lucky enough to get to travel a bit with my job and mostly I stay at mediocre hotels when in the UK or US however this was different class. For the same money as a walk shoe box in Manhattan or Paris you get palatial opulence a working class oik like me could ever dream of.

If you're going to Delhi and want to stay in a top quality hotel this is the place for you. On my last visit Jackie Chan and Madeline Albright were staying. Although I'm not sure they were together, as an item.

My only criticism is the waiter in the India restaurant was too attentive. To the point were I told him to leave me alone. Although this is probably down to me being grumpy. All round the staff were beyond superb. The best hotel staff I've ever come across on my travels.

For £130 a night you wont get anything better.

Leela Palace does deserve its #1 ranking among New Delhi hotels: well maintained and beautifully decorated rooms and public spaces, friendly staff and superb restaurants. The sommelier - I believe he was from Brazil originally - of the rooftop restaurant was very knowledgeable about wines. Hotel offers rides from and to the airport with white beamers, very convenient.

After three nights at The Leela Palace, the room at the historic Imperial, though not the property itself, felt like a step down. That should tell you something about the sheer opulence that is Leela. The initial e-mail contact with a super polite reservations manager, the fawning greeting in the lobby with garlands with somebody photographing our arrival, a room furnished quite expensively with furniture of heirloom quality, ultra thick towels and fine linen, a top quality mattress, a huge bathroom that had both a bathtub and a spacious shower, a staff that was unfailingly cheerful and polite, and an overall decor all through the property that was quietly traditional without being ostentatious - The Leela Place definitely belongs in the top 10% of the 5-star category.

The $300 per night charged in the end of March, 2013 was quite in line with what its few competitors, the Imperial, Oberoi and Taj Palace in Delhi were charging at the time. Much to the delight of vacation travelers like me who pay for these luxuries out of their own pockets, the rates in the summer of 2013 have collapsed to about half that, a reflection of the downturn in both business and vacation travel primarily out of Europe and to some extent globally. I doubt the high season prices will ever reach the $300 mark again.

It is true that the Indian 5-star hotels in Leela's class all try to deliver the same elegance and experience, but you will often find some frayed edges in the older properties regardless of their overall excellence. Perfect maintenance is not a strong suit of the Indian hoteliers. The Leela benefits from its newness. Therefore, one can only hope it would look and feel just as impeccable ten years from now.

If I have any complaints, it is the kitschy bust of god knows what that dominates the garden and pool area with its humongous size and placement. Replace that Route 66 style eyesore with some truly artistic sculpture or carving that is more in keeping with the rest of the property.

I stayed at the Leela Palace in New Delhi for two weeks for a mission. If you have business to do with local governments and the private sector in India, the location is great as it is close to most offices and authorities. Security taken seriously and most guest subject to a body scan and access to rooms is controlled electronically.

I had a room on the sixth floor with views over the - not so exiting - city skyline, but at least above the smog. The rooms are luxurious and nicely decorated with ample of space for storage and an impressive bath. Had an issue with the an exhaust like smell coming out of the A/C, but was resolved by moving into another room. Internet connectivity was initially slow, but after reporting it to the management it was fixed.

The downstairs restaurant Le Cube is a gem! This place offers excellent cuisine that in many US cities you would have to wait in line to get a seat. From pasta to lamb to Indian dishes - amazing! The penthouse restaurant - though in a beautiful setting - appear way over-prized for what you get. Who is prepared to pay USD 45 for a main dish? Breakfast, again taken at the Le Cube, was equally excellent.

Staff in general very helpful. Sometime too helpful with two assistants trying to carry one suitcase or trying to entertain even though I had preferred privacy instead - but overall an excellent staff. BTW, the spa, roof deck swimming pool (yes!) and the gym are of a very high standard as well and offer a nice way to relax after a hectic day of government meetings throughout Delhi.

Will be back for sure should my job take me there again.

Sumptuous! if one is permitted only one word to describe the brunch buffet. The spread is wide and variety diverse. Leaves one wondering what to leave to fit one's limited appetite. Service is warm and attentive, staff eager to please. If price wasn't a consideration, one would be tempted to make the visits more frequent.

From the outside, one could be forgiven for thinking this hotel is Delhi's answer to 'Fort Knox': few if any architectural features in a landscape of greenery and based in Delhi's Diplomatic Enclave. Internally, however, it's another matter....absolutely beautiful. From the minute you walk in the door (having gone through the hotel's subtle security routine) you are in a different world and believe me, you need something like this to come home to. The lavish furnishings of the main lobby are repeated in the hotel's rooms which are not overly large but are warm and inviting. The bathroom is WOW - a bath and separate shower which took two of us: gold tap fittings, large mirrors etc. etc. We had a club room for a night and enjoyed the faciltiies of the club lounge. We were offered a late check out and enjoyed two afternoon teas in the club room but didn't attend either evening for complimentary drinks. The cost of the club room also includes airport transfer.
We considered the menus from all four restaurants but weren't persuaded to eat dinner at the hotel and went elsewhere. We did, however, opt to have breakfast at the Qube which was definitely the best breakfast we had on our 20 day trip through India and Sri Lanka. One of the waiters went to a great deal of trouble to recreate the 'perfect' cup of tea - cold milk not hot and stronger than the usual stuff we'd been having. The breakfast buffet had a huge choice of food and I believe you could have ate enough for a whole day if you were thus inclined. I also attended the gym - staff lovely and very helpful. There are about 4 treadmills and a variety of other cardio machines as well as weights. The TV screens are attached to the treadmills and are pretty large. You can also access the internet on them.
The downside of the hotel was that we had a few issues with electricity and on check-out an issue with our account. We were disappointed that the woman at the reception counter appeared inflexible and disinterested in our concerns. Mr. Vashisht (Duty Manager) came to our aid and resolved the issue. He is very keen to ensure that people enjoy their visit. There are currently nine hotels being built at Delhi airport which will mean a lot of competition in the future. The Leela is definitely a stand-out hotel and I truly hope that it lives up to everyone's expectations. Therefore, if you have a concern whilst staying at this hotel, I suggest you contact Mr. Vashisht or his colleagues as I found the standard of English from the majority of the staff was not fluent.
