Our family of 4 stayed at La Loma for a 2 nights. The experience was something we will always remember. The rooms put you in the middle of a rainforest environment and you are able to disconnect from all of the hustle and bustle of a crazy life. We have two teens and they were so busy with all of the exciting things we did while we were there they didn't even notice the absence of technology! The staff went out of their way to help you experience all of the beautiful nature this place offers. We went snorkeling in the afternoon where we saw dolphins frolicking in the bay along with an abundance of ocean life. We had a wonderful hike through a rainforest and our guide Chapi was very helpful and informative. We kayaked in the tranquil bay both mornings we were there. We also had fun with our guide Kelly learning all about the Cocoa farm on the property. The food was wonderful and everyone was very accommodating to our dietary needs. The other guests were so sweet and we couldn't have asked to share our vacation with a nicer couple. Our hosts, Steve and Karen rounded out the experience with an attentiveness that was almost psychic! This was a vacation we will be talking about for many years to come.

Room Tip: Be sure and book early. We rearranged our vacation so that we could stay at La Loma, since the time...

We were there for 2 nights as part of our honeymoon. Wonderful from the personalities of the staff to the type of people this place attracts. Food was incredible and we are foodies from Brooklyn. Having flush toilets and a hot shower was a luxury for us after being in a hostel. Really exposed to the elements. We were taken care of by Steve and Karen who were regular coverers for the owners who were on their annual break. They were gracious hosts and really made our experience enjoyable.

We went snorkeling at coral caye and in the afternoon went to the bat cave with local Milton. So much fun and challenging too. We saw sloths, cayman crocodile, starfish etc.

We booked a few months in advance.

Wow! Our stay at La Loma was an experience of a lifetime! We stayed with our 3 boys (14,12, 10) for 4 nights in room 4 (more of a casita with no walls) and it was a fantastic experience. The kids counted 238 stairs to get to it. We found this to be great exercise while eating some of the best meals we have ever had. Much of the food is from the land- this takes local and organic to a whole new level! Words really cannot describe this place as it is unlike anything we have ever done before. It is located in a dense and very wet jungle on the ocean (mangrove side of the island) and absolutely beautiful-you can't help but relax. We did everything they had to offer and skipped the optional excursions. By being around, we really got to enjoy all that they had to offer including, making chocolate (so interesting and fun), soaking in the cascading waterfall pools, drinking coconut water (and eating the meat) from coconuts that Chappy had just picked, hiking with Steve and learning about some of the plants and tasting fresh cocoa fruit), talking with Mr. Kelly and getting some good native recipes, watching and helping Bolivia make Johnny cakes under a fire (yum!), watching sloths and all of the other wildlife, kayaking, visiting the local school/neighborhood by boat... Red Frog Beach is beautiful with great waves for body surfing, but the sand flies are fierce, so we had to stay over the water. The other guests were great and it was fun talking with them. Which brings me to my next point...Come here prepared for heat and humidity, mud, bugs (lots and lots of bugs and over 50 ant types, some are huge!), open air rooms (you sleep inside netting), thunder and lightening storms at night like you have never heard before, stair climbing, little electricity...We love 5 star hotels and we loved this as well!

Bastimentos Island is glorious and La Loma was one of the most spectacular places that I've ever stayed. We knew we wanted a trip to Panama but had to decide on the many choices available - with only one week of travel. I was with my two kids: 25 and 15. We chose the Caribbean side after reading about the islands around Bocas and decided it offered a perfect storm of wild, waves and remote. La Loma was one of 4 places we stayed during our trip. Everything about La Loma was superb. The setting is amazing, the rooms (I cannot rightly call them rooms or cottages or cabins or bungalows -they are a category until themselves) are magnificent - open to the jungle, protected in the hillside, enabling one to feel every element yet sleep comfortably (understatement). The food was sublimely good - rivaling the best Boston chef's, the guides went beyond to offer a view that few people get to see, the hosts were caring and non-intrusive all at once (not easy). I would forego any vacation anywhere - and come back. Next time, however, I wouldn't bother to leave the property. One can launch from La Loma to do anything - kayak, hike to the best body surfing beach around, find waterfalls and fresh pools, learn about the jungle from local guides who work at La Loma and are available to help, or just rock away the day from the open view of a hammock. Thank you La Loma: Chappie, Kelly, Roger, Cooks and our lovely hosts who filled in for Henry and Margaret. They even thought to deliver coffee up the hillside and left outside the room. I cannot say enough about La Loma.

Just left La Loma and we already miss it. What a wonderful escape from our busy lives. Our rancho was so comfortable with an amazing view. At night the rainforest came alive with an orchestra of sounds and the star gazing was so cool. So many fun things to do during the day or just take advantage of the comfy hammocks. The meals were delicious and the company of the other guests and the staff was wonderful. A special thanks to Steve and Karen for everything!

We saw dolphins, scorpions, monkeys, beautiful fish, monkeys, and sloths (so cute--a face only a mom could love).

All in all an amazing place!

We have stayed with Margaret and Henry many times now. We fell in love with the place and the people of Bastimentos Island on our first visit and have been returning yearly since. Looking forward to the day that we can bring our children and grandchildren. We are now partners with Margaret and Henry in a US Foundation, educationispower.net that we formed to provide education for the area children. If you are looking for a remarkably different vacation book this glorious place. Your stay will not be forgotten.

What else can I add to the glowing reviews of this property? It's clear that everyone who stays here falls in love with the place, and for good reason. The rooms, the setting, are all stunning as described. And the food. I could go on and on about the delicious food but everyone else has done such a great job of describing it! Steve and Karen were managing when I stayed, and were excellent, knowledgeable and fascinating hosts. I took a day hike with Mr. Kelly to polo beach, and LOVED the experience! What a magical place. It was pricey for my budget, but worth every single cent and then some.

Only one complaint, and it has nothing to do with this wonderful property: I left with about 100 sand flea bites that still itch 3 weeks later! Granted, I'm a bug magnet. This SHOULD NOT prevent anyone from visiting. Just know to bring lots of bug spray and apply often. I thought I could get away without spray and paid for it.
