“Great Service and Great Setting”
Reviewed March 19, 2013

We recently returned from a 7-night stay at Red Frog Beach. This was our second stay at Red Frog Beach because we had such a great expereince on our fist trip. Similar to our first experience, the staff were very friendly and accommodating and were quick to address any of our needs. Our villa was beautiful, clean and spacious. The pool was great for a quick dip without the need to leave our villa. There is plenty to do on the island and our favorite was the zipline / canopy tours. We have been on several canopy tours and this one ws by far the best. We will definitely return for another trip to Red Frog Beach. Thanks again for the great expereince - wish we could have stayed longer.

We stayed here with a group of 9 people. Our villa supposedly slept 8-10, but to fit 10 - two people had to share each DOUBLE (not queen), bed, two had to share a double fold out couch with a non-airconditioned room, and 2 had to share an air mattress in the living room. Not ideal for a relaxing vacation. At first site the house appeared great - marble countertops and comfy couches, but all the door handles and the dryer broke while we stayed for a week. Most doors were totally warped and hard to open and close.

The house slept 8-10, yet they only provided one golf cart to travel travel around. Our vlla was a 15 minute walk to the beach area. Pools are TINY - about 8 ft by 10 ft.

Some of the staff was great - answered calls when we had questions and gave us rides when necessary, but others were less helpful.

Do not organize anything through the activity center, you can find water taxi drivers and others to being you to tourist attractions much more cheaply.

We visited Panama in December. The country was amazing but the Red Frog Beach Resort was by far the low point in the trip. Our lodging was not cleaned when we arrived and the air conditioning was broken. The first night was freezing because we could not turn off the unit in the room and we could not call anyone because there were no batteries in any of the remotes in our room. When we woke up there were dead bugs all over the floors.

When we went to speak to someone about out concerns, we were told to wait and that Hans would be back to speak to us. He never came back and we waited for him for hours.

We felt completely misled by the advertising, which is really tough when you are traveling abroad. There were not many food options and the restaurants there were not worth the prices. When we moved in-town the locals and other travelers did not have anything good to say about Red Frog Beach resort - despite the fact that the beach itself is amazing.

I wish we had read the reviews about people leaving before we booked. There are many great places to stay in Bocas - stay elsewhere. The other staff members were pleasant, but our interactions with the management - even the representative in the U.S. - were not good.

I did a lot of research of where to go in Panama by reading reviews and talked to some friends that live in Panama City. I chose Red Frog primarily because we wanted nice beaches and some rainforest scenery. I thought this place was awesome. The scenery was great, a lot to do as far as tours, trails and different beaches and the view from our villa was much better than I expected. The villa hosts Jermane and Henrique (sp?) were these two guys that grew up on Bastimentos who I thought really made our experience great. They pointed out the sloth in the tree and told us about the history of the island and what it is like to live and grow up in such a unique place. The place wasn’t totally done but it is almost as far as I could tell – didn’t bother us at all as the villa was decked out and very fancy.

I thought the food was great and very reasonably priced for an island. There was a dinner on the beach one night at Punta Lava that was good fun. The zipline was great and that cave tour was so much fun. We hiked out 30 minutes to north beach and saw two monkeys and an iguana. Red Frog Beach where Punta Lava was located had a handful of people there but the other beaches were all our own and not a soul in sight.

Not your typical resort place as the villas are very spread out but we thought that was a good thing, didn’t feel touristy at all. Glad we did not stay in Bocas town as that was the original plan. We had an afternoon there but not sure why we would have wanted to do that.

We have just returned from Red Frog Beach, Isla Bastimentos, Panama. We stayed in Villa 33 with spectacular views of the ocean and thoroughly enjoyed the private pool and lovely accommodations.

We brought along a private chef as part of our small group, as we wanted to enjoy our vacation and didn't want to worry about dining out and cooking ourselves. We ordered food in advance and the meals he prepared were awesome.

We will be back to this beautiful piece of pure paradise and look forward to seeing the progress when we return.

Room Tip: Villa 33 has an awesome view of Turtle Beach and the ocean.

We thoroughly enjoyed our recent visit to Red Frog Resort. The grounds, Villas, and views are beautiful! It was a unique vacation for us - usually we stay at 4-5 star resorts looking for natural beauty and top notch activities, facilities and dining. At Red Frog Resort, there are no fancy restaurants or facilities, but you have a very nice Villa with everything you need and you are surrounded by natural beauty. The Villa was very clean, well appointed, and they had thought of everything we might of needed. Every room had a view and the landscaping was beautiful. We chose NOT to stock up on food in Bocas and do our own cooking, so we ate our meals at both the Beach Bar Restaurant, Punta Lava, and the open air Dining Hall, Kayukos. It was actually kind of nice that we DIDNT need to get dressed up to go out for meals, and we enjoyed being around the laid back, friendly backpackers who frequented both locations, most of whom were staying at the Red Frog Hostel. Just riding around in the golf cart was pleasant - surrounded by massive jungle plants, beautiful foliage, colorful birds and amazing floral scents.

There IS a lot of construction going on, but Daniela in reservations had prepared us for that. We knew ahead of time exactly where there was construction and we had chosen our villa for the view so we didn't mind the noise. The workers appeared to be trying hard to be quiet and respect our privacy. We were fortunate to meet the new General Manager, Hans, and he explained the many upgrades he is bringing to the Resort, so this resort will do nothing but get nicer as he implements his plans.

It was a beautiful, laid back place! We would definitely go back again.

Room Tip: Call Daniela and ask her to describe the views and the construction - she can be trusted to tell you...

We spent three nights in an incredibly spacious and modern airy villa which was superb. The first morning was great when we drank our coffee on the terrace and watched lots of lovely birds in the trees. However later that day the bulldozer arrived and demolished the trees and our peace was shattered and the birds fled. This continued off and on for the duration of our visit. Apart from this development noise the place was like a ghost town. We feel this is not good for the environment of the island. We also found the most awful smells around the island especially near the landing area and the restaurant. When the wind was in the wrong direction these smells reached us when we were on the terrace to join the terrible digger noises, not what you expect in an expensive villa complex.
The restaurant and hostel complex are not in keeping with the standard of accommodation in the villas and caters mainly for the down market backpacking brigade as does the grill and bar on the beach. Staff, however, were very friendly and helpful and the Kayukos Restaurant will deliver meals to your villa and this service was excellent and we even got a bunch of flowers from the Manager on Valentine's day. Getting supplies from the main island was difficult and involved an expensive ferry ride and even more difficult when it is raining and you get soaked on the ferry. A golf cart is essential and a neat way of getting around the area but be warned the roads are very rough and stony in places and not suitable at night.

Bastimentos, Manager at Red Frog Beach Island Resort & Spa, responded to this review, February 19, 2013
Dear Guest:
We thank you for your recent visit and appreciate your kind words about your Villa accommodations. The compliment we receive most often is that the villas are better than expected and the views are tremendous! We do apologize for any inconvenience from any construction noise that interfered with your stay. Please note that we do have specified areas of the island that are finalizing construction on roads on a handful of homes and pools. For future guests, there are areas of the island that are completed and perfectly tranquil. Also, please note that we take every precaution possible in protecting the environment on Bastimentos. Cutting down trees is not allowed and this reviewer likely witnessed tall weeds or brush being removed. Red Frog Beach has allowed for significant reforestation on Bastimentos that was caused by cattle grazing (which has been stopped). We have worked closely with environmental assessment teams to enhance the growth of rainforest and protect the island's habitat. The ecology of Isla Bastimentos is rare and unique and can be enjoyed and appreciated by our guests. If one were to see satellite images of the island from 10 years ago, you would recognize the vast reforestation that has occurred. Again, we appreciate your stay and hope will come back next Valentine's Day to see all the changes here.
Thank you
