Spent a 90 minute dinner there and all was good.

Good food choice ("fusion style" with seared tuna, mahi-mahi, couple of good salads) and a strong margarita at hand.

Worth visiting, probably top-5 restaurant of Bocas town.

Ultimo is a Bocas del Toro institution. Top notch food, bar service, atmosphere and friendly vibes make it a place you will go back to time and time again. With its mix of feel good cooking and culinary tweaks, it always satisfies. What do I eat here? The pork tenderloin is always great, the tuna takaki, the guacamole, the ceviche..and then there is the snickers cake for dessert. If you are looking for a bit of cozy and candlelight in Bocas del Toro this is the place to be (p.s. you can get a boat driver to take you directly to the dock as well).

We order 4 appetizers for our family of 4 and said "we will decide later if we need more". When the appetizers were done, they cleared our table and that was it! Now, we could have said "can we order more" but the kids really wanted to go back to Raw, so we left.

The appetizers that we ordered were the black bean dip (very good and huge!), deviled eggs (although she only had 2 eggs available and we were one of the first people at the restaurant that night. So had to share the 2 eggs, pulled pork and corn bread (very good!) and also the ceviche, which I just had to try while I was in Bocas. It was just okay.

Anyway, most of the food was 5 star, but the strange, unprofessional attitude of the owner (there were other strange things that happened) and the fact that they just whisked us out of there leaves me rating this a 4 star. Perhaps we were just comparing her to Brittany at Raw, who has a certain class that I thought an owner should have.

I eat here all the time, they have the freshest menu, constantly keeping up with whats fresh and best in Bocas. If you don't try the homemade Snickers Pie, then you really, really messed up. Not to be missed!

I little off the beaten path in Bocas del Toro, just around the corner from the Ferry Dock, is one of Bocas' best restaurants. This funky little wooden restaurant, built out over the water, is truly deserving of it's reputation, which is of unquestionable quality. Don't let the narrow entryway fool you. This place is amazing.
The best way I have of describing the food here is international home cooking made with love. This is because, Katharine, the owner spends almost all her time back in the kitchen making sure that every single dish is made with an ample amount of this key ingredient.
And with locally made artwork on the walls and creatively carved wooden sculptures, also created on the island, scattered between the lush tropical plants, all lit by copious strands of tiny lights, the ambiance is both romantic and subtly festive with an all pervasive island feel.
Plus, whenever there are local bands passing through the island or a group of local musicians getting together Katharine is always the first to give them a place to play, adding even more to the ambiance of the place.
El Ultimo Refugio is a definite must do experience but be sure to get there early as it is small and not so much of a secret as it is hidden and sometimes fills up quickly to capacity. And once people find it they tend to go back, night after night. It really is that good.
