“Ok but not the best...”

Bastimentos National Park
Ranked #13 of 37 things to do in Isla Colon
Attraction details

Checked out two attractions on Bastimentos:

1. Red Frog Beach: Decent beach within a 20 minute boat ride from Isla Colon and another 10 minutes walking from the boat landing point. Long, sandy beach. Not the best for swimming as the waves got pretty gnarly and there was plant pieces in the water. But still, overall a nice place. The biggest downer was all the garbage where the beach meets the trees and foliage. You would think for the $3 entrance that someone could pick up all this crap (or maybe people could be smart enough not to leave it there anyway). Another bummer is the little indigenous kids walking around with red frogs held captive in a large leaf to show tourists (yes, I looked too). The frogs will probably be extinct because of this soon.

2. Bastimentos Cave: We hired a boat to take us from Isla Colon to Bastimentos for the "cave tour." The boat ride was mildly interesting as it gently motored into a meandering creek. Upon landing the boat operator told us to "walk that way" to find the cave. After trudging down a muddy trail we came to some plywood shacks. An indigenous woman with dead eyes (no expression whatsoever) came out. After we communicated to her we wanted to see the cave she asked for $4 each. We gave her $10. We didn't care so much about the money and felt sorry for her and her quality of life. After taking our money she went and got a young boy of about 12. He gave us a couple flashlights and we walked further down the trail to the cave. We entered the cave and waded through ankle, then knee-deep water. There were a few rock formations here and there. If you've never been in a cave or cavern, this may be interesting to you but, after seeing quite a few very impressive caverns in my travels, this cave was not very interesting. I don't recommend it. Furthermore, a boat guy on Isla Colon was going to charge us $100 for the trip at first. We asked around some more and found this guy to do it for $30. Gotta love those scammy Panamanians!

At the Bastimentos National Park you can go to the beach, do zipline, walk around the jungle, learn to surf or paddle surf, or just hanging around and see the tiny red frogs and "perezosos" bears in the trees. They have places to eat and drink.

We took a water taxi out to Red Frog beach and then hiked along the coastline and through the edge of the jungle until we came to a quiet stretch of beach. The trek was mildly strenuous because of the heat and some steeper areas that were slick from rain. The swimming was pleasant because the water was calm and clear and you could float for hours enjoying the view. The sandy beach however was not quite as pleasant because there was an abundance of sand fleas. Apparently Isla Coranero and Red Frog on Bastamientos are full of them. If you are looking for calm relaxing water and a picturesque and beautiful location BNMP is great just be mindful of bites and keep deet at the ready. However, I highly recommend Bluff Beach on Isla Colon. It is a ways out of town and the surf is rough but the beach is flea-free, huge, and empty.
