“Outstanding Bocas Choice”
Reviewed June 22, 2014 via mobile

I've been fortunate enough to have visited The Bocas area enough to know the choice of where to stay can be quite confusing. If you chose to stay close to Bocas town on Colon Island you won't beat Sand Dollar. Why? It's close enough to Bocas to access the town's restaurants and bars but not so close to have the noise and congestion. It has a beach out front and jungle in the back with great views. It's easy to head further up the road to Paunch and Playa beaches or the other way to Dragon and Starfish beach. I rented a bike from Sand Dollar and rode it to all these spots (hint to get a bike with gears as the rides can be a bit challenging). The rooms have air conditioning which isn't totally necessary but a very nice perk when getting home from a strenuous bike ride! And the topper for me was the attentive service from Christin, Dama and Guillermo. Just the right balance of being available and helpful but not intrusive. Breakfast is great as described by many other posts and there is a small shared fridge in the library which is also a nice-to-have. If you need anything - just ask. If Christin can't help you, no one on the island can! As others have also described try and visit the botanical garden next door if your time allows. I'm not really a garden guy, but based on Christin's urging I went and am really glad I did. Very nice and memorable place.

We are thrilled that you had such a good time staying with us and received all the helpful information you needed. Bonus: that you even were able to extend your stay! Glad you got out on the bikes, definitely the best way to get around Bocas. We are impressed that you even biked to Boca del Drago...not everyone is that ambitious. We look forward to your return to Bocas so we can share a cold beer with you on the verandah. Thank you from the whole team of Sand Dollar Beach Bed & Breakfast!

Sand Dollar B&B is a amazing B&B on Isla Colon the main island in Bocas. This house is situated on a spacious piece of land right across the beach. The house is very well maintained with nicely done rooms, a small library and toys for kids. Both the ground level and first level of the house have nice sit out area with hammocks and chairs. The lawn in the property is big as well. Christine the caretaker of this property is very friendly and she has wonderful tips about travelling within Bocas. You can expect a nice home cooked breakfast from her in the kitchen on the ground level. At night the waves can be heard loud and clear inside the rooms. During day time if one decides to stay indoors, its easy to spend hours reading a book or listening to your favourite music in the sit out area looking at the ocean.

Reaching Bocas by road from Puerto Viejo can be tedious and it would be better if one reaches Bocas during daylight. One can reach Bocas Town within 5 min from Sand Dollar, the shared cab ride just costs 1USD. The only flip side I found in Sand Dollar are the numerous small lizards you will find the house after sun down except for that its a amazing place to stay at for 4-5 days.

We are glad you found time to enjoy all the relaxing areas of our inn, enjoying books and gazing at the sea (definitely a favorite pastime of ours!!). Sorry to hear you are not fond of the lizards, but they are actually small geckos. Harmless to the guests, they keep the insect population down for sure. We are grateful they are there every night! Thank you for all your comments and we hope to see you again at Sand Dollar Beach.

Wonderful location just outside of town. Kristen, who runs the place, is wonderful and full of great advice to get the most out of Bocas. Everyone here was friendly, helpful and professional. The rooms were clean and fresh with views of the ocean. The grounds are immaculate and breathtaking. The provide bicycles for rent and beach items. Breakfast every morning included fresh fruit and smoothies. When asked, they provided a fresh cocoanut with a straw to enjoy in our hammocks on the porch!

I love this place!

We arrived at Sand Dollar B&B after fours days on Bastimentos Island. What a welcome change...very clean, modern, no mosquitoes and close to civilization :-) Everything about Sand Dollar has a welcome, friendly, open, and artsy feel....starting with a huge covered porch and the very friendly staff. They truly deliver great hospitality. Upon arriving, we sat under the shade, enjoyed a drink overlooking the ocean and listening to light waves against the shore. Our room was very up to date (furniture, plumbing, Wi-Fi, iPod docking, etc), with beautiful decorations, original artwork, double windows opening to the ocean. The city with great restaurants and activities is just a 10 minute bike ride or $3 cab ride. Bluff Beach is within walking distance. Kristin & Damas are magnificent hosts and breakfasts with other guest were so fun and delicious. This area has some many activities and attractions. We sent only two days -- recommend extending visits to at least 3 or more days. We'll be back. Thank you Sand Dollar B&B .

Thank you for your kind words. We are happy that you enjoyed your stay with us. It's definitely worth staying 3 days or more. We recommend a week to enjoy all that Bocas del Toro has to offer and still allow time for some relaxing on that shady porch you enjoyed. I should mention that the $3 taxi ride to town is for the 3 people in your family. Although prices are rising everywhere, it's good to know we can still get to town for $1 per person. I think you did well spending some time on both Bastimentos and Isla Colon...glad you saved the best for last!!

We had a wonderful time staying at the Sand Dollar, hosts Sharon and Mark greeted us as we arrived and provided us with a clean room and very comfortable surroundings, very peaceful area with a beach across the road. The breakfasts on the deck were great and we got to meet so many other guests and even go on adventures with them, Mark and Sharon were very helpful and provided the information we needed to get around the island. I would highly recommend this place as the place to stay while in Bocas Town,

Thank you for you compliments. We enjoyed getting to know you and your wife during your stay with us and loved helping you plan your excursions. You came during the busy season with lots of people coming and going. We agree it is fun to meet the other guests and share stories on the verandah. As for those breakfasts, we are continuing to add new dishes to our menu. We hope to see you again next year!!

What a wonderful place to stay. Dama was the first person we met and she was friendly and gracious. We later met Sharon and Mark, the owners and they were wonderful, so friendly and helpful. They were happy to share their experience of the island and help with booking boats and even helped us book our tickets with Air Panama - which can be tricky.
The room was very clean and comfortable. Nice to have air conditioning when we wanted it.
Dama's breakfasts were delicious as we sat on the veranda enjoying the morning sun and listening to the waves. It was a nice chance to visit and share a bit with others staying there as well. We always enjoyed theses visits and learned a bit about the places they had visited.
We enjoyed the location as we liked being a bit away from the busyness of the main streets of the island. The island is not very big and you can get around on a bike, or taxi ($3) easily. We loved having the beach and the ocean right across the street. There were snorkels and masks as well as body boards to borrow to enjoy your beach experiences. Hearing the howler monkeys, staying in the couple acres at the back of the bed and breakfast, on two mornings was a treat as well.
Our only regret is that we wished we would have booked more time so we would have been able to visit the garden next door (we missed the days we could visit) and explore some of the other islands close by. Sharon and Mark were kind enough to arrange for us to stay one more night which we so appreciated.
Wonderful stay. Such nice people. Relaxing get away. Loved it!!
P.S. If you get a chance, make sure you try the fresh cocoa-nut water - Delicious!!!

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your stay at Sand Dollar. We enjoyed spending time with you both, and are happy you were able to extend your stay another night. Yes, the botanical garden tour would have been lovely...next time? It's great that you took advantage of our location on 3 acres between the sea and the jungle. The howler monkeys made several appearances during your stay. As for the coconut water ("agua de pipa", as the locals call it) we are very proud of our 100 coconut palms and love to share "nature's Gatorade" whenever it is appreciated. Thanks for staying with us, and we hope to see you again!

This place is a breath of fresh air compared to all the hustle and bustle in town. It is CLEAN...and the bed was so comfortable...not to mention there is air conditioning when the heat and humidity were too much at night. Dama is lovely and Kristin was so helpful. We truly enjoyed our stay. The grounds are very pretty and there are hummingbirds everywhere! We even saw a dolphin in the water in front of the B&B our last morning there, as we enjoyed our morning coffee on the upstairs veranda. Dama will call a taxi for you, or the bus from town...just ask. It was so enjoyable...don't miss this great B&B.

We are very happy you enjoyed your stay with us, and got to enjoy some of the wildlife. How nice that the dolphins showed up to wish you a safe trip on your last day! There are 59 species of hummingbirds in Panama. Did you know that hummingbirds can only be found in the Americas? You won’t find them buzzing around Europe or Africa. While you visited, we had the white-necked jacobins migrating through...beautiful. I've never been a "birder" per se, but the longer I stay in Bocas, the more fascinated I become. Finally, we are lucky to have found such helpful, friendly staff, and also to have grateful guests like you. Please come back and see us again.
