Owner description: Finca Los Monos (the Monkey Farm) is situated on Isla Colon, the largest island in the enchanting archipelago of Bocas del Toro, , Panama. The islands enjoy a steady temperature of between 80 and 93 degrees (27 C – 33 C) all year round, with adequate rainfall to keep them lush and humid. Over the years we have created a magnificent garden with large collections of heliconias, gingers, palms, flowering trees, fruit trees, spices and ornamentals. New plants are constantly being added to the property. The garden will be closed for the months of June and July 2018. This means there will not be the scheduled garden tours for Mondays and Fridays. However we are still open for plant and flower sales and reservations for events.

We visited our son in Bocas for a week and had a wonderful time. One of the highlights was the evening birdwatching tour at Botanical Gardens. It was led by one of the researchers at the Smithsonian institute and was wonderful. The gardens were a perfect location as it provided great habitat for the birds and the trails and grounds made manueverability quite easy. At the end of the tour owners Dave and Lynne provided a delightful and delicous cocktail party. I only wish I had done this earlier in the trip so that I could have taken advantage of the morning birdwatching tour too (which I believe ends with brunch). We'll be doing this again when we return to Bocas!

My friend and I booked a half day tour with Owners Lin and Dave Gillingham at Finca Los Monos Botanical Garden. We walked the beautiful tropical gardens Lin has cultivated for 15 years with 6 other people in the group. Lin is a wealth of information on tropical gardening. After the garden tour was over (walked trails, photographed plants in bloom, birds, the monkeys were somewhere) the others left as they didn't book the swim and lunch. Waiting for us on a table by the pool was “pipa” for each (whole coconut cut with a straw). Refreshing! We put our swimsuits on in the change rooms below, and jumped into the pool. Waiting by the pool under a canopy were bottles of vodka and rum; a refrigerator full of cold drinks and iced hibiscus tea, white and red wine, and snacks. It was just for us! About noon lunch arrived served buffet style consisting of skewered prawns, salads, au gratin potatoes, stuffed tomatoes, naming a few of the choices. All food was fresh and excellent, well prepared by Dave. Dessert was an ice cream sundae with caramelized bananas and chocolate. What an afternoon. We were queens for the day and stayed until about 2pm. It was glorious and we felt very special - and spoiled!

This is a beautiful place to visit, the tour is so informative and you get chilled refreshing lemon grass tea and fresh coconut milk afterwards (great on a hot day). We saw monkeys, lots of birds and saw so many lovely plants, trees and flowers which you have the opportunity to purchase. I live here and will definitely return, it is a peaceful haven not far from town easy to cycle there & back.

Do not miss this botanical garden. At 10 dollars per person, it is probably the best buy in Bocas town. My tour was led by Lin, one of the owners. The day I went, I was the only one signed up for the tour so I got a personal guided tour. The previous tour group had 20 sign-up. Lin is an ex pat originally from the UK. She is gracious and knowledable. She was obviously delighted for me when we observed a group of howling monkeys lounging in the trees overhead Lin went out of her way to point out a variety of birds, butterflies, spiders, not to speak of patiently pointing out all manner of botanical wonders. After the two-hour tour, she offered iced lemon grass tea, hibiscus tea and coconut water served from a fresh coconut with the top removed and a straw stuck in the middle. The cab ride from town is 1$.
