“Great place to visit”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

Like everything about it, scenic beauty and the quaint villages the dot the lake side, but lacks great food, food tastes BLAND compared to Taipei even the local night stands.

“Third visit and still awed”
Reviewed January 22, 2013 via mobile

Visited Sun Moon Lake as part of a private 3D2N tour in Jan 2013 with my husband. We took the boat tour and it was fun to just admire the view and clean waters up close. My tour guide had some discounted tickets and we paid NT200 per ticket instead of NT300. The boat ride lasted about 3 hours or so, because you hop out of the boat and walk around some small islands and then catch the next boat to the next destination/ back to the starting point. One of the island had a famous tea egg shop and I had 2 of the lovely snacks for NT10 each. I could have more but my arteries told me to take it easy ;)

It's worth a visit definitely, but I shudder to think what the experience would have been if it was raining. There is no shelter, and you would most likely be uncomfortable. I went during the off-peak season so there were not too many folks to jostle with. When you are at a main stop where you climb a flight of steps to the top to take pictures, remember that you do not have to join the long queue to snap pictures with a rock carved "Sun Moon Lake" in Chinese. There are plenty of these rocks around and you can save yourself some grief and time from having to argue with tourists who cannot grasp the concept of "queue" and "private space". :/

But oval, keep your cool and enjoy the scenery! Worth the time and the money to visit. :)

“Touristy Place”
Reviewed January 21, 2013

Went in the late afternoon. Too much tourists, over crowded to really enjoy the place. The boat ride is a must do in Sun Moon Lake.

“Good for day trip from Taipei, and tips”
Reviewed January 19, 2013

People visit this place because it is beautiful - it has a bit of Switzerland feel to it. The environment is also similar to Xi hu in Hangzhou China. If you are based in Taipei a full day trip is possible, here are the tips.

1. There are direct buses from Taipei bus station to SML, expect a 4-5 hr bus ride as it is actually in the middle of Taiwan, however to save time most people nowadays catch the high speed rail to Taichung, and the bus to SML.

2. You mostly would want to catch the boat, the tickets at the counters are a bit expensive, sometimes the restaurants might sell you tickets with a little bit of discounts.

3. It is advisable to get there early as usually the bulk of other tourists arrive late morning.

4. Bring some sea sick pills, just in case.

“More western travellers should know this place!”
Reviewed January 15, 2013

I have been to Sun Moon Lake many times, but most recently was during the new year period in Dec 2012. Not many places on earth that an outstanding natural beauty can be reached whitin an hour from a big city. This lake is only 40min drive from the 3-million-population Taichung! Rencently added cable car that transport tourist from the lake to the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village make this place more attractive to me. I have my Taiwanese family told me that the lake was not well maintained and dirty when they were young (in the 80's) but the government have really put afford to make this place a world famous attraction. Now the lake is clear of garbage and the bluish color with greenary background really make this place picturesque. Best of all it's free unless you want to cruise around the lake which cost about US$3 per person. Be sure to taste the famous, tasty & traditional tea leaf egg sold by an old lady since 1970's at one of the wharf. There is also a peacock farm that not many people know which I think is worth a visit if you want to learn about the variety of peacock and other native bird of Taiwan.
