“A little touch of Paradise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 1, 2013

We went for our 5th wedding anniversary to Amanwella & Amangalla and must say it was wonderful.

Even though the drive was around five hours from Colombo, it was less painful as they provided cold towels / beverages and pillows to make the ride comfortable. I was also told that improved infrastructure in the country will result in a much shorter travel time.

Upon arriving to the resort, we were welcomed by the friendly staff who even knew our names (very personalised which is great). The Ocean suite was gorgeous. with plenty of space and very peaceful. Being vegetarians, the head chef would come to us before every meal to ensure we had a memorable time. In the two nights at the resort, we ate once at the beach and the other night at the main restaurant.

I was also happy to indulge in various experiences which I felt were very fairly priced because from my experience, all high-end resorts usually rip you off on all the extras which was not the case here.

It really was a wonderful trip where you didn't feel you were staying at an ordinary hotel as you didn't have to sign for every little thing but rather just check and sign your bill at the end.

We stayed at Amanwella for two nights rest and relaxation after a fairly hectic tour of Sri Lanka, It provided exactly what we needed; a comfortable spacious room with a plunge pool at the back, and a large terrace to the front with views over the palm fringed bay. The nature of the site means you may be overlooked but the system of sliding screens works well to eliminate this; however some of the screens can be a problem to move and would benefit from some thorough maintenance.
We found the range of food available more than adequate and enjoyed all the meals we had during our stay, service was good rather than outstanding.

We have traveled extensively and stayed in premier beach resorts from Bora Bora, to Fiji, Bali, Hawaii, France and more - all over the world. This is not a great beach resort and it is hugely overpriced in my view. And surprisingly for an Aman Resort - the Amanwella has no local character whatsoever, and the service, while efficient, seemed less than genuine and caring, and more commercial - that is: efficient but without real warmth or heart. The room is huge and beautiful architecturally, but without any heart or special character. As others have noted, the air conditioning is merely acceptable. The many large windows and doors are not weatherproofed, so lots of hot air comes in and I'm sure the whole system is terribly energy inefficient. Not even any nice flowers or other special touches in the room, and the whole effect comes across as bland and sterile. At $1000 per day it is extremely expensive for what you get. We had no sense of being at a special place and the staff had none of the infectious warmth and glow that we have seen at other top rated resorts around the world. The beach is beautiful, but even during the quiet weather season (February) for this part of Sri Lanka, the ocean was closed to swimming for heavy surf the entire time we were there. The beach area itself in an ancient coconut grove is very special - the high point of the resort for me. Don't waste your money here. There are a number of lesser known resorts in Sri Lanka that are more welcoming and special. There is no dedicated spa - just two rooms that are used for spa services. I wish we had stayed somewhere else, and I felt my money was not well spent.

Room Tip: We were in 109 which is well located, right over the beach with wonderful views of the ocean - but n...

We really enjoyed our stay here. Our ocean villa was spacious and despite being close to the main hotel, very quiet. The beach is lovely. I don't get some of the negative reviews of the beach - the loungers laid out in the coconut grove are incredibly peaceful and relaxing, and the service here was efficient and very friendly too. Yes, the sea is choppy in the surf, but once you're in, it's lovely and a welcome respite from the heat.
We did complain of a lack of seafood, and were immediately told that lobster was available. The curried lobster the chef then served up was extremely good. But it does seem that you have to ask for what you want, otherwise the dinner menu can seem a little limited.

Room Tip: The ocean villas have the best views. 101 to 104 are in a block closest to the main hotel. 105 onwar...

We chose this hotel to end a memorable trip round Sri Lanka. It was the first time we had been to an Aman hotel. Service was fantastic. There were two places to eat both at lunchtime and in the evenings, at the main restaurant and at the beach bar. The latter is more informal and we preferred it. Food at both is excellent. We were in a room near the main part of the hotel and it was well designed and comfortable. However, the AC was not that effective given the doors did not fit all that well. In addition there was no insect screen on the shower room and given there is no glass on the window there you could not have a shower after dark for fear of attracting mosquitoes. The beach is picture perfect and the staff there charming. The waves are quite large on the beach and they are there to help people get in and out of the water if you are not a good swimmer. Stray dogs barking at night were an issue on our visit though the hotel is working on dealing with this. Prices are high as they are for all Aman resorts so expectations are high as well. I would say that those expectations were met in most regards.

Room Tip: We were in room 102. Rooms in this group have a short walk to the main hotel but a longer walk to th...

It alll looks great and the villas are spacious with terrace overlooking the beach and plunge pool. But as others have pointed out there is a lack of privacy - anyone passing could see into our pool - and a lack of lighting and efficient cooling both in the villas and the public areas. Very difficult to read etc once dusk falls. Only the library is cool and well lit. No TVs and the wifi didn't work much of the time - some of us do like to keep in touch with what's going on in the world. Lack of TV seems pretentious arrogance.Service could be slow although always smiling and friendly. The dinner menu is very limited - only 6 main courses 2 of which are veggie and no evidence of the claimed emphasis on seafood although on our last night we learnt that lobster was available if ordered the previous day but it didn't say so anywhere.
Beach looked nice but sea is rough and there were no sunbeds, umbrellas etc effectively ruling it out. However pool was large and inviting and the pool service was excellent. Small spa was nice but why no gym?

We stayed there from New Year's Day for 4 days.

Having worked incredibly hard to explain my concerns direct to the Aman management I am actually just bored with the whole thing now and since I have had no explanation from them for their shambolic management at the resort I just want to let people know that this hotel has a LOT of work to do to match the standard it's likely clientele expect. I feel sorry for the staff there who are keen to please but need to learn and for that to happen to need to be taught! The place could be great and there isn't in terms of beachside 5 star luxury hotels a lot of competition.

It's average and that just isn't good enough.
