“The Best Beach Hotel in the World”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

This is probably the most beautiful beach hotel in the world. It is a romantic, gorgeous hotel on the cleanest pristine beach you can imagine. The price is very fair if you compare it to any other similarly placed property in thailand or bali, and a bargain compared to hawaii and the carribean. If you cannot unwind, relax, and rejuvinate here, then you can't anywhere. The staff is friendly and helpful and the food delicious. The only issue is that it is a real pain to get here, about 3 hours from Galle. But once here, you won't want to leave. We went in May, and the weather was great and the place empty. Just wish it wasn't 24 hours from our home...

Room Tip: would stay farthest away from main areas, closest to beach...

If you can afford it - go here. Amanwella is one magical place for peace, calm and relaxation.

The rooms are spectacular, fantastic attention to detail, the grounds are perfectly maintained & harmoniously blend into its local surroundings (local fisherman, monitors/iguanas, crabs, lizards, chameleons), fantastic staff overall (we didn't see much of the manager but he was in the process of transferring to Amangalla), immediate attention to any requests/concerns, beautiful private beach, good food (especially the Sri Lankan options)

It was however the little things that mattered - the chef making gluten free pancakes for my wife, the little gifts in the rooms, the fruit salad and sorbet on the beach, the private beach dinner in absolute seclusion.

Complaints - none really, but perhaps a bigger selection of local seafood and great flexibility in how it is prepared. And an open air spa (while the spa is very good, I am not a fan of dark air conditioned rooms)

If we are in the region again, I would go to Amanwella in an instant.

Special thanks to Charlie for checking on us constantly and Nero who is possibly the greatest resident hotel pet!

And to those travellers for whom a TV is a must - this is not the hotel for you.....!

We spent 8 days at this great resort. The weather was fantastic, not hot but just the right temperature to be out all day.
The sea and the private bay are probably the best combination we have encountered, specially due to the fact that the beach is at an old coconut plantation. There is no need for parasols(umbrellas). The beachboys are very helpfull If one needs to get into the see. Some people are not used to enter the first wave.
The rooms are up to the Aman standard the food variety needs some attention.
The staff is for the most part local and they are very well trained.
The WiFi needs improvement.
We will be back soon.

Absolute bliss, from arrival to departure. We really could not have been happier and more grateful to be in such a beautiful location.

Loved the chic minimalist design of the hotel's common parts which felt like a mixture of Bali and Japan. Adored our room which was reminiscent of the best we've had in the Maldives.

OK, internet was a bit slow. Breakfast was a bit iffy. A/C should have been better. But really you're here to escape, enjoy the view, enjoy the beach, enjoy nature.

I'm rather bemused at those that complained about no TV or DVD. I'm a total DVD/movie junkie when on vacation - and I was glad to NOT have those distractions in my room. However, did the people that complain about there not being a TV in their room ask for one? If they'd asked, they would have been given one. The matter would have been sorted within minutes.

We spent all day on the beach and in the great pool. And after dinner we sat under the stars listening to the waves and the sounds of nature. Who wants a TV when natural life is this good? This was a good chance to be away from the noise polution of every day life.

We were in Sri Lanka for 2 weeks. The best part - the most unforgettable part - and the part that will always be remembered - was our time at the Amanwella.

Next time I'm stressed on a crowded subway, stuck at an airport or in traffic, or just dealing with the stress of every day life, I'm going to think about walking along the beach at the Amanwella, and all will be alright with the world. And I shall also remember the naughty resident labrador, Nero, who made us laugh when we found him swimming in our private pool. He made our trip!

Everything about the hotel is outstanding, whether it be the rooms, the pool, the bar, the spa, or the restaurants. The staff could not have been nicer or more responsive, and from arrival to departure we were in a state of bliss. Our accommodation was a bay view villa, equipped with a plunge pool which was more than enough room for the two of us. In fact, the villa was perched on hill overlooking a sea of green palms an the ocean.... it was beautiful. The buggy ride from the villas to the lobby and the hotel’s restaurants and pool is available 24 hours, an example of the resort's impeccable service. Besides, the view from there (especially from the restaurant and main pool) is, um, breathtakingly beautiful!! The pond, the palms, the horizon as the sun sets create a scene that is indescribably stunning. I wish I could stay longer, but I have to say, this is one of the most amazing resorts that I've stayed at ever.

Amanwella is a very modern hotel in a beautiful secluded beach location, priced very high as a luxury hotel. It really didn't deliver on this and we were very disappointed with many aspects and I would caution others about staying here. The food is average at best, the service haphazard, the wifi erratic, and there is no gym and no tv anywhere , amazing for a hotel of this standard. Take any entertainment you want with you , I found it like a sensory deprivation zone. At 2000 Usd a night for 2 rooms the words 'rip off' ran round my head throughout the stay and I would have left after one night except for the punitive no refund policy. I was very relieved to leave . The massive contrast with the well run buzzy Amangalla we stayed in next was stark, thank goodness ,and we resumed an enjoyable holiday.

We began our 2 week holiday in Sri Lanka with 5 nights at the Amanwella. Let me first mention the beach. The hotel is well located in a beautiful bay - probably one of the most beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka and virtually deserted whilst we were there. We were treated like kings and meals were delicious and the menu ever changing. This is Aman - the rooms are beautiful for those who love the minimalist style, yet luxurious with all the comforts.
