We finished the end of our 2 week holiday in Sri Lanka with 4 nights at the Amanwella. They were finishing up renovation works whilst we were there but the staff went out of our way to ensure that this did not impact our holiday. We were lucky enough to be upgraded to a suite upon arrival to ensure that we were not disturbed and they regularly checked that all was up to scratch. Aside from that let me mention the beach (which is beautiful and was virtually deserted whilst we were there), the food (which was amazing, I just wish I'd had a few more days to sample more of the ever changing menu!) and the people who looked after us. Charlie (the Manager) deserves a particular mention, he was always very friendly and keen to hear how we were enjoying our stay and made us feel very much at home. The final mention has to go to Nero the crazy black labrador who belongs to Pietro. Never before have I seen a dog at a hotel like this but having him pottering around at breakfast or with us on the beach truely completed our experience.

Stayed last summer for 5 nights in an ocean view room. I recommend Amanwella highly. I liked the hotel a great deal. The architecture is unique and an ode to Geoffery Bawa (an older review made mention of the hotel being reminiscent of a Palm Springs hotel. There is nothing reminiscent of Palm Springs about this hotel! Amazing people's references! The architecture is fabulous). The ocean was somewhat rough when I was there but listening to the crashing waves I found to be very relaxing and therapeutic. The scenery / gardens are gorgeous and the sand on the beach was great and the beach was quiet. I never felt like the hotel was crowded since there are so few rooms. Pietro and staff did a good job of looking after everyone.

I thought that food, by the way, was fine. I am not particularly fussy about food, however.

I would stay again.

This hotel really has (should have) it all. It's on a stunning beach, in a truly lovely part of the island. The property itself is a very attractive piece of architecture. There is a good range of accommodation / room types, and the food was excellent.

Unfortunately when we were there the hotel was renovating, so we certainly didn't experience it at is best - hence the Average rating attached to this review, but I'm very confident that nder normal circumstances the hotel is capable of providing a great experience.

We were stayed at Amanwella resort in Tangalle for 2 nights in march 2012..
Trip for small VIP group of business partners.

It is extremely calm, elegant and smooth place..
Private beach very clean and really private.
Excelent food in the heart of the haven on earth.

Great professional service on each part of the cooperation - from preparation. during the stay till check- out.
Many thanks for the Amanwella manager Mr Pietro Addis - all the quest were delighted to stay... also Mr. Maciej :)

You cannot overstate the importance of relaxing surroundings and good service. Amanwella exceeded our expectations. Simply brilliant. If you want to stay somewhere and unwind completely, this is the place to go. The setting was stunning. Long, clean beach, emerald ocean, huge pool, private pools in rooms, huge suites, we could go on and on and on...

Room Tip: All the rooms are identical in size and luxury, the only choice is how close you are to the sea.

Like all treasures, Amanwella is hidden away. It becomes the traveller's own world hidden in a mature coconut grove on the blue waters of a secluded cove. The sandy beach is white, clean and fronts the Indian Ocean. You can enjoy the beach safely or the beautifully terraced main pool. All 30 or so villas enjoy beach views as they rise above the landscaped premises and charming Beach Club. The town of Tangalle is close by and a safari to Yala National Park is quite practical and comfortable.
The resort is modern and furnishings contemporary. Our suite, 306, was at the top of the resort with splendid ocean views [not a problem with a door to door tuk tuk service]. It was spacious and has its own plunge pool. We had a big balcony on the ocean side and a pleasant patio over the plunge pool on the land side. The suite was well equipped with plenty of draws and hanging space; excellent bathroom amenities [you could read the labels]; safe; iPod speakers; comfortable furnishings and bed; wifi [when it worked]; plenty of towels and linen; and a large bathroom and dressing area. Aman policy does not run to TV in the suites, you should be too busy relaxing.
The dining room and bar above the main pool is open and comfortable. Like everything, in Amanwella, colours fit the setting and all is spotless. Views here across the beach and out to sea allow you while away the time without a care. Service and food are excellent. Staff go out of their way to see every need is anticipated and their service is friendly and attentive. Food and drinks are not expensive, guests preferences are noted and offered again when it is right to do so.
Despite being three plus hours from the Colombo airport, the resort is worth the effort to get there. Traffic conditions require this amount of time as trying to rush through Colombo traffic after leaving the expressway is not really on. Why upset yourself after the wonderful relaxing surroundings of Amanwella? Allow yourself plenty of time until planned road improvements are completed.
Amanwella was a delight from moment the manager welcomed us and until his deputy farewelled us three days later. We would happily return as Amanwella should be even better when its renovations are completed for next year.

Great 5 star experience. The rooms are superb and the private great for afternoon's after a morning on the beach or by the main pool. Food is excellent; the Sri Lankan breakfasts a must.

They make a real effort; with all staff remembering where you''ve come from; what food and drink you''ve order etc.
