We always enjoy our stay with Shantha and Ramani and have returned there many times over the last six years. We were with them when the tsunami struck in December 2004. My youngest daughter is only alive today because Ramani had the good sense to pick her up and run before the big wave hit us. My wife and elder daughter were not so lucky, but we survived. Shantha and Ramani’s house, their café and two cabanas were destroyed by the tsunami.
With the support from a German aid agency and donations from friends Shantha and Ramani managed to rebuild their house and cabanas within two years. Their cabanas and restaurant are situated on isolated stretch of beach a little north of Tangalle. It is ideal for those who want peace and relaxation far from the hassle of touts and the noise of tuks tuks. Ramani is an excellent cook and provides the most delicious food with a gracious smile. I recommend you sample her egg-hoppers for breakfast.
Accommodation in their two bungalows is basic, but comfortable. Each has its own shower and porch. The sunshine café is close by and the beach a short walk through the palm trees. You won’t see many foreigners on the beach apart from the odd turtle. It’s the ideal place to sit, read, relax and enjoy the simple pleasures of life.
