“Super Accommodation, close to beach.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 21, 2013

We spent 5 nights at Moonstone, following a busy travelling schedule that included Kandy, Adams Peak, Ella and Yala National Park. This was the perfect place to relax and reflect on what a wonderful country Sri lanka is. The accommodation is very modern, great quality with large air conditioned bedrooms and a comfortable balcony. the restaurant serves nice food - but do also try either of the beach restaurants across the road in Tangalle Bay (2 mins). Tangalle bay is great for swimming, but for children you need to be aware that the beach shelves rapidly making it a challenge to get in and out of the water. Once in though, it is safe and was 28'C.... the villas are a 5 minute walk from the town and it is worth the walk to visit the market. Also a good 'Food City' supermarket for stocking up on soft drinks and water. A tuk tuk ride back is only 200 rupees (£1) which will be saved if you get two bottles of water. The pool is a nice size, with nice loungers available. Staff were excellent and made us feel very welcome.

The Moonstone Villas was a wonderful place to spend a part of our vacation. With clean comfortable rooms, a relaxing pool, and excellent food at the restaurant it made the stay easy and enjoyable. To make things even better, the owner, Rayleen (sorry if I spelled that wrong) was a wealth of information about nearby beaches and attractions. She was helpful in finding drivers and negotiating prices for tuk tuks. I look forward to returning.

A beautiful place, perfect or relaxing. The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated in a modern Sri Lankan style. I ate at the hotel restaurant both nights, which had a good range of Sri Lankan and Western dishes. The staff can arrange day trips for you with a friendly, English-speaking tuk tuk driver. I had also hoped to see turtles laying eggs on the beach one evening, but this trip didn't materialise. If I ever come back to the south coast of Sri Lanka I'll definitely come back here again, and make it a longer stay next time.

Room Tip: I had room 6, which was perfect for me as it was on the first floor and at the back of the property...

A cracking hotel with beautiful rooms. A great restaurant and the staff were fabulous. We stayed for 4 nights and didn't want to leave!! We don't normally eat in restaurant hotels but the food was so good that we did so every night because there is a wide range of meals on offer including Sri Lankan cuisine. The staff arranged a visit to Yala national park which was amazing and to the nearby blowhole. Tangalle town isn't really a touristy place to visit but the beaches nearby are beautiful including goyambokka! The tuk tuk driver was really knowledgeable and took us back to matara train station for a good price! Would 100% recommend.

PLEASE FIRST READ THIS. IT COULD SAVE YOU $75 & UP TO 4 HOURS ON YOUR TAXI JOURNEY.
OK, so there is a new airport in Sri Lanka called Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI). It is an international airport & is 1hr 10mins away from Moonstone Villas. The road between them is great & has no traffic either. Our flight (unexpectedly) stopped here on our way in from Bangkok & we flew out from here on our way to Chennai. No extra cost on Sri Lanka Air website. DO NOT EXPECT SRI LANKA AIR TO TELL YOU ABOUT THIS, THEY DON'T. YOU MUST RESEARCH IT YOURSELF.

Now about Moonstone Villas. It was just perfect for what we wanted. Here’s why.

Great sized rooms with high ceilings, nicely decorated.
Large, firm but comfortable beds.
Useful balconies/patios with loungers or a daybed, table & chairs. Nice to sit out on of an evening.
Very helpful & accommodating management.
Great, friendly service.
The rooms always kept impeccably clean.
Great food. Local food & pizzas are the highlights & they will deliver to your room (nice touch).
Breakfasts are large & varied. Loved the pancakes & Sri Lankan option.
Child friendly.
Great WiFi. Not lightning fast but we could use it in our room as well as around the resort.
Walk across the road to one of the best beaches in the area (Turtle Bay).
Walk across the road to one of the best restaurants in the area (Cactus Lounge).
Nice pool.
Easy, fast ride into Tangalle (good & cheap (actually free) medical facilities BTW, which we needed once).

Things to mention.
You can get a Sri Lankan breakfast, which I would recommend but you need to ask for this a day in advance. Do try the String Hoppers.
Upper rooms have a balcony, lowers a patio.
There is only ground & first floor rooms. Nothing higher.

Would I return? Yes, certainly. Highly recommended. Thank you very much

Thank you for your review of Moonstone Villas - we appreciate hearing how we have done and it is good for the staff to know their efforts to make your stay a comfortable one have been appreciated. I also appreciate that you took the time to comment on Mattalla Airport. We do believe it will really improve access to this most beautiful part of Southern Sri Lanka.

We stayed for 3 nights here at the end of March 2013. We were a little concerned before arrival due to adverse comments in Lonely Planet regarding accommodation units being close together and road being at back of nearest beach. Both comments are misleading. Each apartments are reasonably spaced apart, spacious and very comfortable. The nearest beach is well below the road and the sounds of the sea cut out any traffic noise. A better beach is just a short Tuk Tuk ride away.

The owner is really helpful and the staff are really good, very friendly and always smiling. The best of the 10 places we stayed during our 3 weeks in Sri Lanka

Stayed for 2 days in this guesthouse and would definitely recommend.

Breakfast was standard (I.e not huge) and the food in the restaurant was pretty good, curry is a definite recommendation.

Staff very friendly and helpful, Raelene the Canadian lady running the place was outstanding in terms of friendliness and helpfulness.

Rooms were superb, villa-styke, clean, modern and good air con. WiFi was average but no slower than most places. A mini fridge would have sealed the deal!

Definitely recommended.
