New, clean comfortable appartments. Small (8 app) condomium style hotel with all facilities. Big rooms, porch, swimmingpool, restaurant. Nice quiet beach across the street. Close to city. Busstop in front of hotel. Tuk tuks every 5 min. A nearly perfect place to stay in Tangalle. Minus side, a busy road (choose a backside app if possible). The bedconstruction made out of loose wooden planks is very annoying. No possibilties to turn without loud squaeking noises. Not the best place for honeymooners. But a real four star top notch place.

Room Tip: Choose a backside appartment (noise busy street)

Thank you for your review of your stay at Moonstone Villas. We are pleased to see our service for you was ver good, and thank you for your comments about the squeaky beds. As we never sleep on them - it is great to hear of a problem so that we may quickly take corrective actions. We stayed in Moonstone Villas for 5 days in October 2012. We are a family of 5 - 2 adults, 3 kids (12,10 and 5) hiring two villas by the pool. This was our first trip to Sri Lanka and the manager Anil sent a minivan to collect us from Colombo (3.5 hours).

Our rooms were spotless, meals were delicious and generously proportioned. We got to know the waiters who were friendly and only too willing to tell us all about the local area, food and answer any other queries we had. They even made us several Sri Lankan dishes which were not on the menu so we could taste truly traditional fare. Highly recommended.

We learnt that the hotel was built as a post Tsunami project with the help of a Canadian led agency called "Developing World Connections".

The highlight of this hotel were our hosts who were charming, courteous and friendly from first to last. By staying 5 days we had the opportunity to get to know and enjoy the company of each of the managers and staff. Staying 1 or two days would not have afforded us the same opportunity. The staff and management simply could not be friendlier or do enough to make us comfortable and our our stay enjoyable.

Daily routine was quickly established to be early morning coffee on the balcony followed later by breakfast and relaxation with a book by the pool. It was like living in our own little home complete with pool and tropical garden and even a resident friendly labrador.

Other highlights of our stay included a variety of activities arranged with the help of manager Anil and the friendly staff that allowed us appreciate the life and culture of this part of Sri Lanka in greater detail. These excursions included (1) a trip by Anil through peacock inhabited rice paddies to visit the local Buddhist Temple where we were lucky to be given a family blessing by the two resident monks (2) A visit to the neighbouring Developing World connections community housing and school project at Ketakalawatta. The next step of the relief project is to help repair another school nearby the temple which was damaged not by the Tsunami but by the local monkeys!-we saw them on the roof causing havoc! (3) a trip by Katishka to visit a local clay pot making "factory" , a local blacksmith knife/parang maker as well as a small milk curd factory - all using basic traditional skills that can't have changed in hundreds of years (4) a magical night-time tut tut trip to Rekawa. This late night adventure allowed us to watch a giant green turtle lay her eggs, bury them and then swim away. Anil gave us a knock on our hotel door alerting us that a tuk tuk would pick us up in 5 minutes at about 10 o’clock one night. It was a 20 minute ride to Rekawa and then a 15 minute walk down the beach ...a beautiful moonlit night. The whole experience lasting 2-3 hours was amazing.

The beaches around Tangalle were incredibly beautiful. Not always safe to swim in but stunning to look at and enjoy all the same. One of the most beautiful was the beach at Palm Paradise Cabanas on Goyambokka Beach that we visited for an afternoon. (Must honestly report however that the staff in Moonstone were much friendlier, interested and efficient).

Our favourite restaurant outside of the hotel was a little hut by the beach run by a friendly man just in front of Moonstone Villas..the Cactus Lounge. We had 2 amazing lunches there which provided nice variation from the hotel restaurant.

All in all, Moonstone Villas was a fantastic retreat and offered the ideal introduction to us to Sri Lanka. Highly recommended for those looking for comfort to unwind and relax.

Great hotel, and amenities, helpful courteous staff. Our group stayed at Moonstone Villas for two weeks during a volenteer work experience with an NGO. During that time i was able to sample the majority of the menu and can honestly say enjoyed it all. Great selection of both Western and Sri Lankan fare. I would highly recommend the Moonstone Villas to anyone travelling through the Tangalle area.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have a great view of the sea, rooms towards the back are more secluded and quiet.

We stayed two nights here and enjoyed it very much. Modern spacious rooms with a nice clean design and good bathroom. Nice grounds with a pool and set back enough from the road to be quiet. Restaurant was very good and we ate there both nights and enjoyed a really good curry one night. Good choice of different breakfasts as well. Staff we great, very attentive and friendly.

Lonely planet says they have packed too many rooms in but it didn't feel crowded to us. The front balcony of our room was a good size with chairs and table and this looked onto the rear balcony of the next rooms down (as well as a view down towards the beach). But no one uses the rear balcony as this is smaller and you have the more pleasant front balcony. So you have privacy even though you are not too far from the next rooms down. The rooms are one on top of another (2 floors only) with no one either side of you. This gave each room a great feeling of space.

Close to beaches (we hired the scooter they have available and went to Talalla - great undeveloped beach, for now). We would happily stay again, good value for the quality.

We stayed here for 2 nights and loved the place! Literally a 1 minute walk from a beautiful beach, close to the small town centre!

Great and friendly staff, and food was lovely! Extensive breakfast, and wow...the curry rice for dinner was fantastic!

Really spacious rooms and lovely quiet surroundings in this lovely beach town.

Pool slightly smaller than hoped but still very nice and wifi was quite intermittent in the rooms

Would definitely recommend this lovely place!

After stopping for tea one morning on route to Matara, I was impressed by the vibe Moonstone gave me and ended up spending 2 nights there, in December 2012. The place is immaculate! The rooms are very clean and spacious. Felt like home, fellow Canadian Raelene and the rest of the staff tended to my every need and truly made for a great and relaxing experience. Location is great, just a stones throw from a beautiful sandy beach and perfect distance from town, not too close, not too far! The food was outstanding and they have a very extensive menu. I would recommend Moonstone for anyone passing through Tangalle.
