“Moonstone Villas was a wonderful home away from home!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 7, 2012

A group of 14 of us stayed at Moonstone Villas in Tangalle, Sri Lanka from April 14 - 25th. Our stay was wonderful. The Managing Director, Raelene Shea, was very helpful, accommodating,
friendly, etc etc etc. Here's some further info on the hotel and it's services.

Hotel rooms:
There are 4 2-storey buildings, with a total of 7 rooms. They are simple, but very comfortable, clean and quiet. They're located just across the street from the Indian ocean. The waves were pretty intense every day, but the beach was very nice to walk along. You may want to bring water shoes as it's a bit rocky. All the rooms face the ocean, and at one end of the upper balcony we had a very nice view of the water. The bathrooms have a shower that is open to the rest of the bathroom, but a squeegie is supplied to direct all the water after a shower to the drain. We didn't find it a problem not to have a shower curtain. There is a closet with a drawer you can lock for your valuables. It's very very hot in Sri Lanka, so having air conditioning in the room was a blessing!...it's available at an extra $10/day....very reasonable and worth every penny!!! As long you're ok with one flight of stairs, my one word of advise would be to request a room on top floor of the 2nd or 3rd buildings...better front and rear views. If you prefer the ground floor, then request the first building facing the water.

Service:
We found the service of ALL employees at Moonstone Villas to be fantastic!!! We had a set time of breakfast at 7am every morning that we had arranged, but they'd have coffee made for us few early birds as early as 6:30 or even 6am sometimes. They are so friendly and eager to please. I would rate their overall service as EXCELLENT!

Food:
I for one loved the food at Moonstone. Every meal I had there was excellent. The sandwiches were a little different from what I'm used to in Canada, but in a good way....ie a cooked egg on a club sandwich. Fresh pineapple, papaya, and bananas every morning accompanied our varied breakfast buffet. Eggs made any way you like. It was great! Dinners were fantastic! The curry dishes were amazing...I like it hot, but if you don't, you only need to tell them to cool it down a bit. For those who don't care for the typical Sri Lankan curry dishes, they had lots of choices for you too...pizza, pasta, beef, etc.

Location:
Moonstone is approx 5 hours from Columbo airport, and it's a crazy drive! There is pretty much always 4 rows of traffice driving on 2 lanes, if you can picture that. Somehow it works over there. Moonstone is located along the southern coast, only a 10 minute walk (or a very short 100 rupee tuktuk ride...their taxis) to the little town of Tangalle. As mentioned above, Moonstone right across the street from the Indian Ocean.

The grounds/pool:
The grounds are keps very clean and neat daily. You'll often see monkeys jump from tree to tree, and hear the peacocks call from the trees as well. Moonstone has a beautiful kidney-shaped pool right on site. With the Sri Lanken heat, the pool was wonderful and enjoyed every day.

Excursions:
The only excursion I participated in during our stay was a day at the Elephant Park. 76,000 acres of nature! It was amazing. We saw approximately 100 elephants, a couple of crocadiles, tons of monkeys and various species of wild birds, water buffalo, etc etc etc. I felt like I was on the nature channel. I can't remember how much we paid, but it was very reasonable and I would highly recommend it! It's about a 2 hour drive from Moonstone. Raelene can help you to book it. There was a few people from our group that went to see a sea turtle lay her eggs on the beach, but I didn't make that one as we had just arrived and I was asleep...they usually lay their eggs through the night. I do regret missing that though!

Overall, I would highly recommend Moonstone Villas. It's very good value for the money.

Very clean, very friendly staff, easy to find and on a main road so very easy to get to and from Tangalle and the surrounding area. I've stayed in all kinds of places abroad and Moonstone was among the nicest. Raelene, Kanishka and the rest of the staff will go out of their way to accommodate you any way possible.

Highly recommended.

This was our second last accommodation of the whole trip. We have seen all kinds of hotels. So we were well prepared for what was to come this time. We arrived here quite skeptical, but were completely surprised by this stay.

The owner of this hotel is the Canadian Raelene. Except for the fact that she is a very nice lady, she is also a perfect example for all Western hotel owners in Sri Lanka. She totally understands how to operate a accommodation and how to please the guests.

This accommodation consists of a set of villas. There was also a triple room available. Our room had simple yet beautiful furnishings. Beds were equipped with efficient mosquito nets which we could easily push aside. Usually those things hang above the bed and you have to tighten it once you lies. It can be quite annoying. Those beds were just perfect, nice, big and soft.

Bathroom was just as simple, but very clean and convenient.

Next to the villas is a small pool in the sun. We were the only guests at the pool at that moment and had wonderful and relaxed time.

The hotel is situated on the road. Therefore it is very easy to find and we had absolutely no problems with traffic. If you cross the road, you're already on the beach.

There is a ocean view from the restaurant area. It is possible to dine here. The menu offers both local and European cuisine.

The two pets gave the whole thing a very cozy and homely feeling. The cat and the dog were very funny and sweet.

Unfortunately we stayed here only one night. If we haven't had a hotel reservation for the next day, we probably would stay here a bit longer.

There is just nothing negative to say about this hotel. It's new, nice, centrally located and very affordable.

If you drive along the south coast of Sri Lanka, both the Tangalle town and this hotel is definitely worth a visit.

My husband and I stayed at Moonstone Villas in March 2012, it was the nicest of all the guest houses we stayed in during or trip to Sri Lanka. The rooms have ac and fans, are quit spacious, hot water with good pressure, mosquito nets and the beds were very comfortable. We got complimentary waters and fruit juices upon our arrival. The pool is clean and refreshing as is the rest of the the garden areas. It's location is great as it is a 2 km walk to the centre of town but you are far enough away from the noise and commotion of town. There is a beach right across the street which is safe to swim at and have a beer as the sun sets. The restaurant has a variety  of tasty home made food not just rice and curry as we ate there quit often trying everything out. Breakfast has different options as well Western and Sri Lankan, we even got bacon!! The owner of Moonstone Villas is a very nice lady from Canada named Raeleen. She always made sure we were always looked after and our stay was made as comfortable as possible, we really appreciated it. We would defiantly recommend this guesthouse to family and friends.

As one of the first guests to stay at Moonstone Villas when it opened in the spring of 2011, I am excited to be returning for the second half of April. The staff are wonderful and very helpful, the rooms neat, tidy, well appointed and clean, with modern Western conveniences. Well priced and well located in the Tangalle area, you want for very little while staying here. The fact that it is run by a Canadian woman with strong ties to the local community makes it a very special place.

I enjoyed staying at this new hotel. The room and bathroom were sparklingly clean every day.The staff were all eager to make my stay a success and could not do enough to help. The restaurant had a good variety of western and local dishes. The owner arranged an island tour for me using a trusted driver who was both competent and knowledgeable. The vehicle was as immaculate as my room. I would recommend this to families or couples as reasonably priced vacation accommodation. Even the family dog is well behaved!

My wife and I really enjoyed our 5 night stay at the Moonstone. We were very impressed with the size, cleanliness and service at this hotel. ( the place is virtually brand new)The staff were very friendly and the owners helped us organize and amazing trip to Yala and Bundalla National Park. The food and the waiting staff were great and the prices very reasonable. There is an amazing beach right across the road where we would spend our time relaxing and swimming.
