“Tangalla's Top Table!”
Reviewed December 28, 2012

We followed the below reviews and have to say everyone is right. Prem is a real gem in Tangalla, authentic home-cooked Sri Lankan food in a charming family home restaurant. We paid around 600 rupees each for a delicious fish curry, dhal, pumpkin, pepper and green banana curries with onion sambol, rice and popadoms.....everything was delicious and great value for money. Prem definitely suffers a little from its location (basically in the corner of the bus station car park in the town centre) but those who can make the effort to drag themselves away from their beachside hotels/guest houses will be rewarded with an unforgettable evening!

“Best food in Sri Lanka”
Reviewed December 22, 2012

Don't judge a restaurant by its setting or its decor. This restaurant is located in the corner of the bus station parking lot - which on Wednesdays and Sundays - converts to a busy market - then you have to search through the covered market to the far corner to find this gem of a spot. The family (with varying standards of English - some speak beautifully, others basic) are fantastic. Mother is the cook - and what a cook she is! We were recommended to order in advance - it's a good idea to pop in, order your food, ask how long it will take, explore the market town, and return. We ordered the typical Sri Lankan curry, and were treated to a veritable feast - every dish was prepared from scratch and with love (no packet or tinned food here). Among the spoils were a jackfruit curry, dahl, aubergine curry, coconut sambals, bean curry, caramelised onions... All delicately flavoured, generous portions. We so enjoyed our meal we booked to go back for the typical Sri Lankan breakfast the next morning, which was just as delectable.

“Delicious Home Cooked Food”
Reviewed December 18, 2012

If you like an intimate dining experience then this is for you. Definitely not posh or 5 star luxury but one of the best meals we had during our two week stay in Sri Lanka. The owners have turned their front garden into a small enclosed restuarant and the food is all freshly prepared and cooked in their own kitchen. The owners and their children were very friendly and wanted to sit and chat with us which we really enjoyed. We ordered a prawn and potato curry with rice and poppadoms but they brought out little extra dishes for us to try as well. All of this including drinks cost less than £10. One word of warning (wherever you eat in Sri Lanka) if you like spicy food then ask for it otherwise it will be very mild and sometimes quite bland. We asked for spicy at Prem and it was cooked to perfection. 100% recommended.

“An experience we won't forget.”
Reviewed October 15, 2012

We have just had lunch here and it was an amazing experience. It's tucked away in the far corner of the bus station lot and easily missed if it's a market day but totally worth looking for. Saman the owner welcomed us into his restaurant and home as if we were old friends. His wife cooked an awesome feast for us and we felt like part of the family. The food was fantastic! It was incredibly tasty and the food highlight of our trip so far! Saman invited us back for breakfast and we cannot wait! Really was nice to meet and be welcomed into a lovely family. All up the food came to 1600 rupees for the two of us and there was so much food that despite our efforts we couldn't eat it all!

“What a disappointment”
Reviewed September 11, 2012 via mobile

We followed other reviews and visited the restaurant. Nice family, nice service, but it's all. We got really small portions and the food didn't have any taste. Maybe we just had a bad luck, but definitely not satisfied.
