“Thoroughly enjoyed oceanfront cabana”
Reviewed December 30, 2012

My husband and I stayed for 3 days and really enjoyed it. Tangalle is a nice quiet get away from bustling Unawatuna. I read the previous reviews, and agree the pool area is a little unkept, but with Beachfront cabanas and the ocean 20 feet away, who goes for the pool. We also ate up and down the beach and certainly found Sandy Cabanas comparable. The BBQ chicken was very good. Chaminda and his staff were extremely helpful.
The only thing we did not like about our stay was the 10% service charge was added to not only the food, but the cost of the room. So an additional 1800 rupees. It was the first time and only time we came across this in 3 weeks. However, even had we known this, we would have stayed b.c the cabana was perfect,

We chose to stay here for a few days because the rustic cabanas have some arty and practical touches: shelf space / lots of natural materials used. The rooms actually have a lot of charm - something we found lacking in most of the accommodation in Sri Lanka in the budget-to-mid-range bracket. However, the garden around the swimming pool is neglected, something desperately needs to be done to make the pool area more convivial and inviting - a few deck chairs, perhaps a bamboo shelter for people to sit under? The owner had plenty of time to do this - he spent most of the day sitting around the restaurant - time which could have been better spent tending to his neglected pool area. There was also a lot of building rubble lying around the side of the property behind the pool, and this should be sorted out too. It smacked a bit of neglect. Keen to take our money, but not keen to run a ship-shape guesthouse.

It rained a lot while we were there, and as a result our cabanas were chilly. My boyfriend got pretty sick as a result, and I eventually had to sleep in several layers of clothing. Be warned, if you're there when it rains, those open cabanas are not cozy - and we were supplied a single sheet. When we asked for a blanket, we received another sheet...

The restaurant had one of the most expensive menus we've seen in Sri Lanka. I don't mind paying for good food, however, this food was not good. It was a lottery: there were one or two dishes that were great, but on the whole it was very average - uninspired and bland. In the evening the restaurant plays very loud torturous doef-doef music - this when you have the wonderful sound of the sea right there. Isn't the sea what we travelled across half a continent to enjoy? Fortunately, there are better priced restaurants offering better food close by. And the ones that are in the same price league are offering food which is leagues ahead of the food at Sandy's.

There was also this weird sign in the rooms which said that they would clean the room every 3 days and charge 10% of your room rate for that. Whoever heard of a guesthouse charging you to clean the room? This, when the prices were already pretty steep. It just all felt a bit money-grabbing.

Personally, I felt the whole experience is over-priced. The prices were triple what they said in the latest guide book, and my feeling is that the whole of Sri Lanka is jumping on this greed-bandwagon. Sadly, many tourists we met felt the same way: they'll be returning home with tales of woe and warning to other travellers: Sri Lanka is no longer offering good value for money.

Don't trust the pictures on the old website: Sandy's little cabanas are beautiful, romantic, and we had one with a beach view right on the beach. We stayed 4 nights sleeping to the sound of crashing waves. No hot water but who needs it when it's 30 degrees outside! Good laundry service. On some nights they'll do BBQs and it's a real feast! Ramilla is very helpfull in organizing trips to yala or UDA national park. If you like rustic and clean cabanas you'll love this place.

We stayed at Sandy's for 3 nights. Unfortunately we had a lot of rain. We had the room upstairs and next to the beach. The room was awesome.
Unfortunately the food is little expensive for the value you get. The food was in my eyes a little too less spiced and all tasted al little the same. You can get so delicious food in Sri Lanka. Here it is more or less average.
But all in all we had a very nice stay at Sandys!

Passed through on a motorbike trip around Sri Lanka and the small sign along the road to Tangalle caught my eye. Wanted to stay for a night but ended up staying two. Fresh Seafood, calm atmosphere, cold beer and right on the beach. Rooms are basic but very clean. The beach is beautiful and 'endless'

When we arrived in Sri Lanka, we went to Negombo, Colombo, Gale, Unawatuna. All beautifull places but very crowded or touristic. We were really hoping to find a relaxing place near the beach. And guess what, we found it!! A tip from a friend led us to Sandy Cabanas. A treewheeler brought us there and when we arrived we really wanted to stay there. We first thought that it would by to expensive or full, but non of that. There was a lovely cabana upstairs (Venus) fot us three. Tree beds and, a nice bathroom and a big balcony. We imidiately said yes! First we were going to spend two days there, but it became five days. We couldn't leave. The owner was very friendly and we felt like home. We could eat and drink on the beach, relax all day on the beach and in the evening we searched for the big turtles. The food was delicious. They even showed us the fish they caught in the day, that we could eat in the evening. It was all we dreamed of for that moment. It gave us a lot of energy to go further, but no place I visited later on, could give me the same feeling I had in Sandy Cabanas!!!

Room Tip: All rooms are nice. You can sleep near the beach or more in the garden.
